The Sanchi Stupa is the oldest rock structure in India, which dates back to 3rd century BCE. Commissioned by emperor Ashoka, this architectural brilliance is built over the relics of Buddha himself. Across centuries, more kingdoms and Buddhist rulers were built around the original Sanchi Stupa adding ornamental gateways and monasteries. The complex now is beautiful and spiritual for anyone looking for a peaceful retreat, whereas for Buddhists it is a major pilgrimage.
Kandariya Mahadev Temple
The largest and the grandest of all temples in this complex, this temple was dedicated to the worship of Lord Shiva. The design and architecture is similar to that of the Lakshmana Temple but there is also a lot of difference. This is adjacent to the Devi Jagadambi temple which is much smaller than this. As you stand in front of this temple you are bound to think about the people with such expert hands in art and carving. It is said that no other man had the guts or talent to build something so grand and thus, the Kandariya Mahadev Temple became the largest of all time here. The form of Shiva worshipped here was the Lord Virbhadra and the temple theme is the destruction of evil forces. The main carvings on the temple walls are of snakes, serpents and serpent kings and queens. Like most of the other temples in this temple complex, you will also find smaller idols of other Hindu gods and goddesses here.
The Lakshmana Temple is one of the three biggest temples of the whole temple complex of Khajuraho and belongs to the western group of temples. This temple stands like a mountain among all other over here and is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. The temple is mainly known for its grandeur and the variety of carvings on it. If you take a clockwise round around the temple, the carvings will seem to be opening like a scroll of awesome stories. The temple dates back to the reign of the Chandela King Varahavarmana and it faces the Varaha and the Devi Temples. The scenes from court life, romance between men and women, motifs of plants and animals and carvings of erotic rituals are common when you see the temple walls closely. There is a flight of stairs which you will have tp climb up to reach the main mandap of the temple.
