Yala National Park
This is one of the most visited wildlife parks in the region and is the largest one bordering the Indian Ocean as well. It is spread out across 979 km.
Sites close to the park
This wildlife park is situated close to many ancient holy sites. Magul Vihara and Sithulpahuwa are two cultural sites you mustn’t miss out on.
The initiation
The park was declared a wildlife reserve all the way back in 1938. This was initiated by the Minister of Agriculture at the time, D. S. Senanayake.
Bird Sanctuary
Yala National Park is one of the top 70 places in Sri Lanka to catch a glimpse of rare birds. If you are lodged at one of the Yala hotels, do head over for a session of bird watching.
The ecosystem
The ecosystem here is diverse. This means you’ll find, thorn forests, monsoon forests (both dry and moist), semi-deciduous forests, marshes, grasslands, a beach and marine wetlands.
