We got up early and walked straight to the Dambulla cave temples. From the main road, you can spot the huge Golden Buddha. This is where the climb starts towards the caves. It’s a good hike, especially in the morning when there is a cool breeze. What I liked most was that there were very few tourists – which felt good! As we neared the top, we could spot the Sigiriya rock and the hill next to it – they seemed like a long way away, shrouded in mist. We reached the top and I saw that it was quite different from the cave temples I’d visited before in Ajanta and Ellora. A closer look showed that it was actually similar to Ajanta with the cave carved into the side of the huge rock with drip lines that kept the insides dry during rains.
