Bangkok is a very popular tourist destination and that to one which won't hurt you pocket. You may get a 5 star hotel at the rate of a three star.
Don't go by the starts. It's all about how much u spend per night for ur stay. U can get a good 5 star property at around 7-8 k per night.

In pattaya I stayed in four seasons pattaya.
not a beach resort but a very good hotel. highly recommended In Bangkok stayed at Ramada. excellent hotel and most importantly very close to all shopping centers

I stayed in Hotel Prince Palace in Bangkok, you can easily get a boat just across the hotel which is the best & cheap way to commute & avoid traffic. The place is very neat & clean with a good view & a helpful staff
