Opt for homestay or airbnb..will be cheaper.
Go with a professional driver as roads are risky.or book a train in advance and reach there and travel on local conveyance.
Carry some warm clothes or full clothes.
Go shopping in local markets and get tea for friends and family..you get organic and fresh

If you are visiting for the first time, try these in Ooty

> Masala tea
> Corn > Ooty Rusk (Variki) Also you get spices and plants there for really low rates. And if you want to go a bit further, there is this place called masinagudi - near ooty. You can go there too. The route is really exciting one with lot of elephants on the way! They aren't tamed but they don't hurt anyone passing by either :D You can spend a day enjoying the place and the weather.
