In India, you get most beautiful mountains in almost five states i.e. Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Sikkim and Meghalaya where you can easily and safely travel and explore as much as you want. Hills of all states differ in their organizations a little. But being from Uttarakhand i would still say if u want something comparable to Switzerland in cleanliness, literacy rate and natural beauty you must go to Gangtok. It was one of my finest experiences there.

I'm surprised to see that all the responses only mention Himalayas. I'll come back to it later for undoubtedly there are many places across the stretch of the Himalayas and depending on which state are you planning for from Laddakh to the North-East, the Himalayas offer not only different views but even different Flora, never mind the fauna for you hardly get to see the wild animals or even birds these days. However, what I would like to recommend is the Nilgiris, a mountain range that is older than the Himalayas and amazingly rich in the different shades of green in addition to the different kind of soil. You may not see snow called mountains but the views are absolutely amazing, whether you're in Ooty, or in Kodai which is a sister mountain range and totally a magical place like none other in India. there is an interplay between the rich variety of trees and sholas (thick Forest foliage of dense green trees for which the Nilgiris is famous) with the sunlight so that the sunlight filters through the varying shades of green in a way that makes it a most beautiful and magical experience of light and greenery. there are numerous trek trails in all these parts and esp from Ooty, if you are game you can take a bus till the smugglers trail - a ten km hike and reach Munnar, another small, not so populated, but beautiful small Hill town. If you reach Munnar, the silent valley is not far and you can do a day camp there as it being a world conservation spot, one is not allowed to stay overnight and yet the day experience is worth it. The small train ride from Ooty to Kunnoor is another experience of it own and the sight from the mountains into the plains of coimbatore is simply spellbinding. there is so much more in Nilgiris of you are into adventure and ready to trek. besides there are several national parks, mafumulai being one esp if you're traveling from Ooty to Mysore. My favourite, however, v remains Kodai for the magic that prevails in its air and no wonder it is there only place where you get natural magic mushrooms in India. As for Himalayas, if you're looking for vast stretches of barren, dessert like but majestic mountains, nothing to best Laddakh or for that matter, Spiti and Lahaul. the experience is humbling as you trek or drive through this part of Himachal with it's very low density population and long stretches of amazing mountains that seem to offer no solace in terms of greenery and amazing simpler people that inhabit this part. The view is incomparable. Another highly recommended option will be to take the Manali-Leh road - this provides an experience of a lifetime as far as mountains go for you get everything, snow capped peaks, green mountains to desert mountains and as the road goes winding down and up the hill, some parts of the journey can be even scary for the steep fall as you see trucks and buses that crashed down below while you travel literally in the clouds. Within Himachal and Uttarakhand, the garhwal region and the kumaon region offer different experiences. you can see high ranges from nainitaal route it even from Simla but the real fun is Himachal for its innumerable trekking options - Triund is a good choice. in North East again the vegetation is different and if you want a look at high ranges, without going deep into the mountains, Darjeeling offers excellent how, including that of the Everest. in fact if you're game for long trek then going to Himalayas base camp is your best chances to experience Himalayas right on the heart of it. North East Himalayas offer a different and at places like Sikkim and Meghalaya, almost surreal scenic views.

If you are a beginner, most easy will be Triund, Dharamkot, and Palampur resiting near each other. if you are an intermediate, kheerganga, Parvati valley will be a better experience. one can also visit uk, flower valley, Nainital and Ranikhet for even more peaceful experience. if snow is not your type then western ghat can also be a better active place to visit before monsoon with chilling weather. if you find it worth expressing, do share your experience. cheers. happy travelling.
