Take a train to chennai and a bus from chennai to pondi,stay in a homestay or hostel and hire a bike to go around...I assure you it’d be less than 5k including everything

Train is most economical mode of transportation. You can take a train to Chennai and then from there to Pondicherry. You stay there at Hostels/Hotels for as economical as 350-450. You can get around either by renting a bicycle or bike. Avoid fancy cafés/restaurants if you're bent on saving money.

Hello, Take a train / flight to Chennai. Take a local train from Tirisulam Railway Station (cross the road from the domestic airport, take underground subway straight ahead 10 mins walk) to KoyamBedu Bus Station (CMBD) The price would be ₹5 or ₹10. Travel time : 20 mins Note : Dont take the Metro as price will be higher (₹ 50) Take a bus (green yellow color) from CMBD to the Pondicherry Bus Stand (You are now close to the Tamil Quarters of Pondicherry). Travel time : ~ 4 hours Take a sharing Rickshaw (₹5) per seat to be left close to the area of Pondicherry close to the Pomerade shore (Bay of Bengal). Travel time : 15 mins This will make your journey much more enjoyable. Have done this and its worth :)

Train to chennai then chennai to pondi bus. Road trip to chennai is also offers a good view. on my trip i had big size coconut, dosa, idly available easily and avoided restaurant for making it cheap.

Take the local bus to Chennai from Pondicherry, from there you can take a second class seat in an express train to Hyderabad.
