Can you recommend some places close to Delhi (upto 12-16 hours by road) which would be good for star-gazing? I want to carry my telescope, so it would be preferable if the place is accessible by car and has dark skies with some accommodation available.

Jaisalmer, Rajasthan will be the nearest place to Delhi, it will take near about 13 hrs. to reach Jaisalmer from Delhi. You can also think about Astroport at Sariska, It's situated near the Aravalli Range in Alwar District of Rajasthan and just a five hours long journey from Delhi.

The best place where I saw the Milky Way clearly was in Chandratal in Spiti, HP. But its far away, certainly more than 16 hours from Delhi. Otherwise, any place in Ladakh (Hunder Valley, Pangong Tso) are good candidates. My experience has been - star-gazing is best done at dry, high-altitude villages. Good luck!
