I am not sure but I have heard that bookings that are paid for is not required, you can just book verifiable tickets from some agent or through certain airlines

Yes. you do require to book your flight tickets prior to visa application. also, you need to have confirmed hotel bookings. if you are going to visit several countries within Scehngen area then it is recommended that you book the internal transport also before visa application. Not all, but some countries may require it.
