Travel usually in the nights so that you can save a lot of money in hotels and all. Hostels and couch surfing for cheap accommodation. Walk and cover places if possible. Research forehand and plan where you want to travel and accordingly lay your own map.

You can volunteer for Zostel where you can go and stay as an intern in any one of their hostels across India and Nepal. There are many other volunteer programs inside as well as outside of India which you can check out.
