Hi Gunjan, I follow a rule of thumb: the more you hear about a place, chances are that it is an overrated place. If not overrated then it will definitely be overcrowded. In my humble opinion the following places are overrated and overrun: Manali, Mussoorie, Dehradun, Nainital, Mt. Abu, Dharamshala, Kasol, Pattaya, Phuket, Kuta (Bali) and North Goa.

I believe you travel for yourself and one place may appeal to someone and may be totally irrelevant to another. Hence, you should make a list of your own. I would suggest that you try to plan your trips during the off-season to really enjoy the beauty and serenity of a place. You are sure to come across 'non-touristy' things and places and experiences then. No place is overrated, only over-visited. Try making an itinerary that includes smaller towns around: - Shimla - Manali - Ooty - Goa
