I think if you stay in Mahabalipuram one night then you can better explore it, but you can always leave early morning Pondicherry and come back at night. Its only 1.5 hours journey one side from Pondicherry to Mahabalipuram.

I would advise you to keep a day extra for Mahabalipuram..if u want to explore it completely. However if u are short of time then a day is fine too. Leave early morning and you ll b able to cover the major tourist spots!!

Mahabalipuram is about 90 km away from Pondicherry. You can reach there by car/bus in 1.5 hrs approximately. You can cover the journey and back in a day but I would suggest keep a separate day for Mahabalipuram to explore properly. Both the places are beautiful. 3 days at Pondi and 1 day at Mahabalipuram will be enough. Have a nice stay!

Hey Arjun, Yes, you can cover Mahabalipuram in one day ... All you have to do is leave Pondicherry by 6 in the morning .. You will reach Mahabalipuram by 8 a.m and there head directly to shore temple ... you would need an hour easily to see the entire place ... After this head to pancha rathas and enjoy your time there for one more hour .... After this head to Krishna's butterball ... have a great time dre by clicking pics of a huge boulder balancing itself on a steep hill ... Then you can come back to sea side or beach ... you have a lot of small souvenir shops nearby ... enjoy shopping dre ... leave back to Pondicherry by 5.30 in the evening ... That's it ... Happy Travelling Bro!!!

Ya you can easily cover Mahabalipuram in one day. Only catch is that take your own vehicle and leave early in the morning from Pondicherry. You can cover the major places of Mahabalipuram by foot, as they are nearby. And I have heard from my friends who regularly visit to Mahabalipuram. The evening markets in Mahabalipuram are really lit and great. So if you stay by the evening, do give a visit.

One can easily cover mahabalipuram from pondicherry within a day. And one day is enough to cover mahaballipuram in one day if u have a car, coz 7 raths and temple at the sea face are bit far from the cave area. Most of the time will go is visiting caves and lighthouse. I went mahaballipuram last year, and didnt found much hotels and good places for night stay. If u wish to travel from pondicherry to chennai then coveing mahaballipuram will be best option as it will take equal time to reach any of the place from mahabalipuram.

Yeah. Of course. You can. It’s hardly a 3 hour drive from Pondicherry. You can start early in morning at around 5 am. Reach the place on time and you can enjoy for 12 hours. Visit local places and shopping and evening you can return back. Happy travelling

Hi Arjun, You can cover Mahabalipuram in one day. All the places in Mahabalipuram is in the radius of 5kms max except for Tiger caves which is around 10km max. Mahabalipuram is well connected from Pondicherry and roads are super fine. I covered the one side (120kms) in 1and half hour with 1 break. And plus point most of the places opens early in the morning so you can plan to reach Mahabalipuram atleast by 8am.
