Hello Rajashree. Language wouldn’t be a barrier in south India because almost everyone is acquainted with Hindi. If you have concerns about language barrier. Why don’t you try Ooty for solo travel. Almost everyone in Ooty knows Hindi. And most of them are North Indians Happy travelling

Varkala is one of the most beautiful beaches. You have to visit the beach by sunset, at night the waters come till the bottom of the cliff and the view from above the cliff is stunning. Language wont be a problem both hindi and english would work. People around their are a bit conservative so I would suggest to dress up accordingly and also stick to crowds. Dont hang out alone after 10 or 11pm i guess. You can find a lot of foreigners their, it would a good experience to get to know them they would have a lot stories to tell. You can find mini shacks and a lot of shopping options too beach clothes and handicrafts too.You can find good hostels to stay we were in a group so we booked rooms at walkable distance from the beach. So overall Varkala would be safe and adventrous for a solo female traveller.

Language won't be a constraint when its kerala as english is well understood by majority of people due to high literacy rate of state. So concluding with YES you can move ahead with the plan for varkala. Enjoy travelling!!!

Head there without thinking twice if you're a big fan of the beach and the sea. I know a lot of people who stay in Kollam and head there for a romantic getaway on weekends, which should tell you that it is a very calm and relaxing place, great for a solo traveler to relax and unwind. If you know English then you can practically make your way through most of Southern India. Happy Journey :)

Hey Rajashree! I'm from Kerala and I've been to Varkala a lot of times. You have nothing to be worried about the language barrier as it's a place where a lot of tourist come. Almost everybody would speak basic English and a little of Hindi. It's like the mini-goa of Kerala. It would be a wonderful opportunity for you to interact with a lot of people from various places around the globe. I would suggest you book a decent homestay or hostel in advance as it can be crowded during the season times. However, you can reach to me for any help as I'm a fellow wanderlust. If you are into a bit of adventure sports you can find places for that or reach out to me as well.

Varkala is a calm and peaceful beach. Kerala is among my fav destinations, however it is not the safest one for a single woman. Language is not a problem, but in the interior areas men tend to stare a lot. So if you, choose a safe accomodation and stick to crowded areas. The safest place in Kerala for a single woman I feel is Fort Kochi.
