Hi Maurine. I think Malana is shut for tourists. At least the cottages are. You could try to take your own tents to stay the night. The locals aren't really friendly there.

I am going to tell you about the Parvati Valley, Kullu. Malana, Tosh, Kheerganga, Pulga, Manikaran and Kasol lies in the Parvati Valley. Malana - Regular buses are available from Kashmiri Gate ISBT to Bhuntar(Kullu). From Bhuntar you have to take a bus to Jari. It will cost you 35 rs. After that there is a taxi union in Jari where you have to book a taxi to Malana. For a small car they charge around 800 and for SUV they charge around 1300. Alternatively there is a bus available in the evening which will charge you 32 rs. Both taxi and bus will drop you at Narang from where you have to trek for almost 4–5 km to reach Malana Village. There are few good options for staying there but one of the best is the Dragon Guest House which is owned by Mr Prem Sharma (9805105400). He is a very nice man and good quality room is available in this guest house with very good facility. The guest house is situated at the back side of Malana Village and is at a higher level so you can have a full view of Malana Village from there. People of Malana Village are very polite and helpful but please don not touch them and their houses as they consider themselves superior so please do not hurt their sentiments. It is ok to talk to them and as they are very polite in nature and understand Hindi. Do try the Cheese Sidhu at Dragon Guest House. Also, if you are stoner then do try the Malana Cream and Red Ice. There is trek from Malana Village to Chandrakhani Pass (12007 feet) where you can get snow (but i am not sure about it in august). Its difficulty level is hard so If you are physically fit then only do this trek and please do not trek without a guide. The guest house owner can easily arrange a guide if you want (Guide charge aroung 800 for 8 people). The trek to Chandrakhani from Malana Village is quite steep and tiring so do take some dry fruits and choclates with you. It will take around 4–6 hour (depending upon your speed) to reach there and around 3 hour while returning to Malana. Many people trek to Chandrakhani Pass from Manali (Manali-Rumsu-Chandrakhan i Pass- Malana) and reach Malana but it will take around 2–3 days in doing so. So if you are running out of time you can do the trek from Malana. Tosh- After spending time in Malana you can go to Tosh which is also a very small and beautifull village in the Parvati Valley. There is a bus available in the morning which usually departs at 8–8:30 am from Nagar and will drop you at Jari. From Jari there are regular buses available for Barshaini and from Barshaini you have to book a Taxi (400 INR for 6 people) for Tosh. Tosh is a very beautiful place and a very untouched village in Himalayas. It is also a base for Kheerganga trek. Rinku Family House(9816513543) in Tosh is a very good place to stay. You can also have delicious food at Jasmeet Dhaba(Mr Anil 8626815596) opposite temple. If you are Stoner then try Tosh Balls. Pulga is also a small village situated near Barshaini and is quite similar to Tosh in culture and cuisine. Kheerganga- There is a trek from the Dam site(near Tosh) to Kheerganga (130015 feet). Unlike Chandrakhani, this trek is quite easy and there is no need of a guide. It is a 12 km trek from the Dam site and one can easily complete it in 4 hours. There are two major milestone in reaching Kheerganga- Nakthan and Rudranag. There are numerous food stalls on the way to Kheerganga. Kheerganga do have number of staying option including tents and rooms. Lotus Guest House is suitable for a one or two night stay and have clean toilets. There is a natural hot spring in Kheerganga which is very famous among the people. Don’t forget to try it as it one of the best experience to have such hot springs at 13000 feet. Taking a bath after the trek is the best idea one could have. You can easily return to Barshaini or Tosh in 3–4 hours depending upon your speed. Manikaran- There are regular buses available from Barshaini to Manikaran (till 5pm). Manikaran is famous for its Gurudwara and Ram ji Temple. Best option for staying in Manikaran is the Gurudwara where there are fine quality rooms available. Remember, theses rooms are free but if you are staying there for more than two days you have to do some service in the Gurudwara (like serving in langars, etc). Gurudwara langar serves the best quality food one could have at that altitude. Rajma and Khadhi Chawal is a must try at the Gurudwara Langar. Also there is a natural hot spring in the Gururdwara. Manikaran local market is also very good and there is an ATM adjacent to tha Ram ji Temple. Kasol- Kasol is situated at around 3 km from Manikaran and is one of the most famous place among the Israeli. Very fine quality food and stay is available there. You can stay according to your budget. Old Kasol have very good and costly staying options whereas New Kasol do have some budget and fine staying options. Do try the Nutella Croissant at German Bakery and Chicken Lafa at Freedom Cafeteria.
