Carrying tent and living in tents are all based on where are you going and what is purpose of travelling. Like if you are going in Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand for trekking and hiking tents and sleepong bags are the best option. For sightseeing in famous cities like Delhi, mumbai, etc you can find cheap hotel near main railway station(in compromise of facility and hygiene). For city like Varanasi, Rishikesh, Haridwar prefer to stay in Ashram where you will find peace and different environment that you ever had before experienced like ghats on River Ganga and bathing in it is just amazing.
