My opinion is always do first job like collect information where you are going. Most kind of Transports, food, hotels and places to visit. If still not getting all details then mostly people ask there with locals or Hotel manager where you are staying. They can help with all tourist spots and all info.

Most of all you must enjoy the journey to your destination. Travellers do this they always in urge to reach there destination, So misses so many break points throughout journey.

I collect most of the information beforehand mostly through Google and other travellers like on tripoto...once in destination any doubts locals will guide best

Please ask the locals. not only will you come to know a lot, the months and history and local history of the place but also get to know if some unknown or not very famous but exciting places. Besides, half the fun of traveling is meeting and talking to me people and locals especially. It is sad that they guide books, gps navigation and internet searches have made this part of traveling, interacting with local people, redundant but that is a great cost for when you go visiting places, people form an equally interesting part and talking with them, you'll come richer experientially speaking.
