You can visit either of them. There is nothing famous about Holi festival for either of the 2 places and would be like a normal day.

From my point of view I would say Mahabaleshwar as Lonavala is very hyped and that is why it is crowded and expensive. Mahabaleshwar is beautiful along with Panchgani and pocket friendly .

You may visit anywhere between two as both the places are not famous for holi festival.
In lonavala you can get various options about holi party.

Mahabaleshwar is place for getaways, you can spend your weekend there normally as Normal hill station . If you want to enjoy holi with everyone you should go Lonavala

Their could be parties in lonavala resorts, so it is better. but you need find which resort is offering the same

both places will be similar for you since there is no Holi celebration as such but some events manager can organize Holi event , you can take part in them, for sightseeing purpose both places are good to visit but best time to visit them is rainy season

Not that worth both. instead go somewhere in Kokan (coastal Maharashtra) where Shimogovtav is celebrated night before Holi.
