It's mainly because of the size of the image. There are apps like Adobe Lightroom and Snapseed which you can use to reduce the size of the image but retain the maximum quality. If not required, you can even edit them in basic editing provided in the Android and iPhones and reduce the size.

The size of the image matters while uploading you compress your image and then try to reload
