🐊 Kotmi Sonar: India's second largest crocodile park and archaeological heritage

Kotmi Sonar is a small village located in Akaltara tehsil of Janjgir-Champa district of Chhattisgarh, but due to its archaeological heritage, historical stories and crocodile park, it has become a tourist attraction not only in the state but across the country.

There used to be a prosperous empire and fort here, the remains of which are still under the protection of the Archaeological Survey of India. The Crocodile Park established in 2006 gave it international recognition.

🏰 History and archaeological importance of Kotmi Sonar

"Village of Goldsmiths": It is said that in ancient times a large number of goldsmith community lived here, due to which it came to be known as Kotmi Sonar.

Symbol of prosperity: In many archaeological excavations, pots full of coins and ancient jewellery have been found from here, which are proof of its prosperity.

Fort and fortification: Kotmi Sonar was once a strong fort surrounded from all sides.  At present, only its stones are left, but on the basis of these remains, it has been declared a protected monument by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).

🐊 Kotmi Sonar Crocodile Park Establishment and Importance

Established in the year 2006.
The first crocodile park of Chhattisgarh, the largest in Bilaspur division and the second largest crocodile park in the whole of India (after Chennai).

Natural breeding and conservation of crocodiles is done here.

Characteristics of crocodiles

Currently more than 400 adult crocodiles and a large number of small crocodiles are found here.

These are mainly of the reptile species, which can remain hidden under water for hours without breathing.

May-June is their breeding season and they lay eggs in the sand dunes.

Food is given every evening at around 4 pm, which is the most attractive moment for tourists to watch.

Monsoon season (July–September): The park is surrounded by greenery and the activities of crocodiles look most attractive.

Winters (October–February): Ideal time for family and picnics when the crocodiles come out in the sun.

Summers can also be visited, but avoid the very hot afternoons.

Morning (7:00 – 10:00 am)

Departure from Bilaspur/Janjgir-Champa to Kotmi Sonar.

On arrival, visit the ruins of the old fort and archaeological site.

Forenoon (10:00 – 1:00 PM)

Visit to Crocodile Park

View crocodiles from the watch tower.

Educational experience with children at Science Park and Energy Park.

Bird watching in the lake and natural bushes.

Afternoon (1:00 – 2:30 PM)

Lunch break at the park canteen or picnic spot.

Taste local Chhattisgarhi cuisine (Fara, Cheela, Aamti Bhaat).

🚌 How to reach

By road: 30–35 km from Bilaspur, 35 km from Janjgir-Champa.

By rail: Nearest railway station is Kotmisonaar which is 1 km from the park. Other nearby railway stations are Akaltara and Janjgir-Champa.

By air: Raipur Airport (about 140 km away).

1. Watch crocodiles from a distance, do not try to get close.

2. Always keep children under supervision.

3. Be careful on slippery roads during rains.

4. Maintain environmental cleanliness and do not litter.

5. If you want to see crocodile feeding, reach by 4 pm.
