Houseboats

Leh-Ladakh is known for adventurous rides as it has some of the world's toughest roads and highest passes. In this mindset, we actually did not face any major issues with the roads in Ladakh region. Thanks to Border Roads Organization and good weather conditions!!!

Please visit itinerary space for details about the places.

Here you go with the overall experience:

We faced lot of truck-traffic during our journey through the states of Madhya Pradesh (MP), Punjab and Rajasthan. Cattles on the roads is a normal sight in these states.

While roaming in this region, Leh plays a role of a base station. In most cases you need to come back to Leh after visiting places for a day or two. Fuel stations, Car mechanics and spare parts etc are available in Leh but outside Leh there is no guarantee of getting fuel. So better to carry additional fuel in jery cans or make your itinerary such that you reach back to Leh or other such big town to refill the fuel. At most of the places, card payment facilities are not available. So carry sufficient cash while roaming out of Leh. Also it's advisable to carry extra cash for unforeseen events.

After Leh, only BSNL network works and at some places there is absolutely no range of mobile network!!

We always kept confirming the current statuses of the routes with locals and the army men. It helped us a lot to decide the plans for the next destination.

Surprisingly, passing through all the check-posts in this region was such an easy task!! We just had to present our documents and make entries in their registers, no unnecessary questioning!!! The army men were also very helpful and caring at every place. They provided us with the current information about road conditions & other things.

During this journey we experienced varied cultures. All the people we met during the journey were gentle, simple & very much helpful. The towns & cities visited in State of J & K were nothing different from our cities. The only difference was the presence of Army around the corners.

During this journey we experienced hot sunny days, heavy rain falls, Sand storms, driving  in the dark night, Ghata loops (Hairpin Bends), lots of Iron bridges (One vehicle at a time), butter smooth roads (excluding City highways & E-ways) and the roads just for the names sake!!!

Travel through Leh-Ladakh region would have not been possible without Border Roads Organization (BRO). It has kept all the roads motorable through its constant & meticulous efforts. At every pass and at all the mountain ranges we got to see cranes & other equipments strategically stationed to clear out blockages due to landslides. The bridges are like lifelines in this region!! The make of these mountains is such that it does not allow firm base, so maintaining these bridges is also a vital task.

H. V. Kumar (HVK), the Chief and his team, provided all the guidance for route planning and made all the necessary information available to us. They were always keeping a watch on our locations, our breaks and our pace; which helped us to stay on correct route, manage our time and reach to the destination as decided. Central Hotel Desk team of HVK supported us for booking the accommodations for our team and it was a very pleasant experience with all the Hotels. Hats off to Chief & his team for all the support throughout this journey!!!

HVK had provided us with a detailed list of Car related things and we just obeyed his instructions to carry all items from the list. On the calls he reiterated many times, 'I am a good risk manager', and believe me he really is!!

Our Punto faced a Tyre puncture two times. Another Punto suffered a problem with rear axle. Safari got an oil filter breakage and tyre punctures. All Puntos and Linea got scratches to under-body due to lower ground clearance on the rough roads. Bullet had a battery problem so had to be towed.

The puncture kits, tyre inflator, hydraulic jacks, jump start cables... We used it all that was there in the list. We experienced that anything can happen at any time and we were ready to face it!!

Sending location and road updates to the following cars was a nice practice that we followed throughout the journey. It helped the team to remain at a pace and be in correct direction.

Being in a team was always advantageous in difficult situations. The time management was a little difficult task with so many cars & people. The decision making took a little time due to difference of opinions & thoughts but discussions led us at one decision & one team. The food breaks were little longer as it took time to prepare & serve food to all of us at a time.

20 days through different cultures with different people, different situations, happy times, some sad moments; this journey had it all. Experience is the best teacher and experience of this journey taught us a lot.

If you are a traveler or a tourist, its best to travel in a group. For an explorer, for such a drive or an expedition, I would suggest a team of two cars and 4 to 5 people. This will lend you lot of time and ease to explore the places!!!

While going on such an adventure, never go under prepared. Let it be your personal care, car care or any other emergency things, do not compromise.

Try out local specialties if you are a foodie but be cautious about the appetite. Don't let stomach problems spoil your travel.

If you love to write blogs and note details of the journey, try to make notes frequently during the journey and capture the things on your camera while you explore and enjoy.

The group came together from a forum ‘Team Fiat India’ & soon it became a Team Fiat Drive to Leh-Ladakh. 19 people came together from different cities for this expedition. There were 5 Puntos, 2 Lineas, a Safari & a Royal Enfield.

22-Aug-15 Pune to Chittorgarh Via Mumbai 1001 Kms driven. Stay at : Hotel RnB, Bhilwara Road, Chittorgarh Tariff : 1600/- per room per night
23-Aug-15 Chittorgarh to Hanumangarh 704 Kms driven Stay at : Hotel Rajvi Palace, Junction Road, Hanumangarh Tariff : 2300/- per room per night
24-Aug-15 Hanumangarh-Amritsar 361 Kms driven Stay at : Hotel Grand Galaxy Plot no.5, Hotels Lane 2, Queens Road, Amritsar Tariff : 1700/- per room per night In our itinerary we specifically included Amritsar for a whole day & night stay to visit to Indo-Pak border at Wagah, Jalianwala Baug and Golden Temple. The Golden Temple looks amazing both in sunshine and in the night. The reflection of the glowing temple was just pleasant. The Jaliyanwala Baug is mantained like a tourist place, so we did not felt that painstaking sacrifice and whatever happened in the British era. The first felt real excitement was the moment we reached at Wagah, we were so close to Pakistan!!! We attended the border function here which goes for about an hour from 6 to 7 pm.

26-Aug-15 Patnitop to Srinagar 243 Kms driven Stay at : New Jersey Houseboat, Nigeen Lake, Srinagar Tariff : 2200/- per room per night Mr. Shah, the only TFI member from Srinagar, gave us a surprise with a warm welcome. We got to try a local speciality drink Kahwah served with dessert in a fully traditional set-up. We just felt so affectionate. It just demonstrated the hospitality of the people in the whole Ladakh region. In Srinagar we spent the Sunset time at Daal lake and visited Pari Mahal. The boat ride in the lake was beautiful. We also did the photo shoot in the Kashmiri attire which was very nice experience. Srinagar is famous for pure Kesar & woolen clothes so we did some shopping too. We also traveled in the local buses in Srinagar. It was amazing experience. We got a chance to see the houses from inside in Srinagar & Leh, they were just awesome and so much cozy as the weather demands. There were carpets laid down all over the floor and the wooden furniture was also very nice.

28-Aug-15 Sonamarg -Kargil - Lamayuru 229 Kms driven Stay at : Hotel Moonland, Lamayuru Village, Kargil Leh Highway Tariff : 1000/- per room per night Zoji La pass between Sonamarg & Kargil gave us the real adventurous welcome with its dusty and rough road and heavy truck traffic from opposite side. It was like a practice session to us for what we were up to for next few days. On our way to Leh we visited Kargil War memorial and also took the snacks breaks in Army canteen. I had goose bumps when I saw all the pictures and read the stories at the war memorial. We also stopped at Magnetic hill point out of curiosity to see if actually the vehicle gets pulled upwards due to magnetic effect. But we did not find any truth in this information. Lamayuru is the place worth a mention. The place is very pleasant and peaceful.

29-Aug-15 Lamayuru - Leh 108 Kms driven Stay at: Jorchung Guest House, Main Tukcha Road, Leh Tariff : 1800/- per room per night
30-Aug-15 Leh-Turtuk 241 Kms driven Stay at: Turtuk Holiday Camp, Turtuk (Swiss Tent accommodation) Tariff : 2000/- per room per night From Leh to Turtuk (205 Kms appx.) you get to drive through Khardung La (18380 ft), Nubra vally, visit white sand dunes at Hunder and Diskit Monastry. We drove the last stretch of this route in the night and the scenic beauty was just mesmerizing!! The white sand dunes at the bank of river Shayok were shining in the starlight. You get to do a camel ride also in these dunes on double humped camels. We stayed for 2 days at Turtuk, one of the northern most villages in India. The people here belong to Balti community. During our walk through the village, we ourselves plucked apples & apricots from the trees and ate them fresh. The people were kind enough to let us do so!!! While exploring this village we found the only point where range was available for BSNL network and we named it ‘BSNL Point’. In Turtuk we met another gentleman, Mr. Rashid, who helped us a lot to get one of our cars repaired. We had to stay there for 3 nights because of break-down of Safari and this man refused to take any rent for our extra stay. We just felt so indebted, what a kind person! & sheer extra ordinary hospitality!!

02-Sep-15 Turtuk to Leh 241 Kms driven Stay at: Jorchung Guest House, Main Tukcha Road, Leh Tariff : 1800/- per room per night In Leh, there are quite a few places to visit and these can be covered in a day. We visited Zorawar Fort where all the history of Ladakh is displayed. Shey Palace was also very beautiful and it has a Buddha Temple too. We also visited 3 Idiots fame, Rancho’s school, Druk White Lotus School. You get to see many monasteries in this region. We visited the Hemis Monastery. The experience of the peace inside the monastery and to see how they offered their prayers to the God was pleasant. You must visit Shanti Stupa for a sunrise or a sunset. It gives a picturesque view of Leh and its surrounding mountains.

04-Sep-15 Leh-Pangong-Leh 320 Kms As the roads were too bad we chose to visit Pangong Tso in a Tempo Traveller. The route is through Chang La pass (17688 ft). Here you are bound to get a snow without fail. The landscape of Pangong Tso Lake in the backdrop of mountains was just stunning. No adjective can describe that beauty. The colour of the water keeps changing every minute as different shades of blue sometimes yellowish... just awesome. After around 3 pm the winds disturb the water so it’s advisable to reach there around noon. There are campsites available for stay at Pangong but the temperatures drop drastically in the night and the facilities are not so good.

In the states of Jammu & Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh, the temperatures were pleasant throughout but due to high altitudes, the sun was scorching at times.
