Lucerne's roots stretch back to the 8th century, but it flourished as a city in the 12th century when it became an important trade hub. In 1332, it joined the Swiss Confederation, playing a pivotal role in the shaping of Swiss identity. The city’s medieval core is still evident in its architecture, from city walls to historic guildhalls, creating a seamless link between past and present.

Lion Monument, Lucerne (Löwendenkmal)

The Lion Monument in Lucerne is one of the city's most emotional and symbolic landmarks. Carved into a natural sandstone rock face, it commemorates the bravery and sacrifice of the Swiss Guards who were killed during the French Revolution in 1792. The monument is widely regarded as one of the most moving stone sculptures in the world.

Historical Background

On August 10, 1792, during the Storming of the Tuileries Palace in Paris, hundreds of Swiss Guards, who were loyal to King Louis XVI, were massacred by revolutionary forces. Despite being vastly outnumbered, they defended the royal family to the death.

More than 700 Swiss soldiers died, and their heroic stand became a symbol of loyalty, duty, and sacrifice.

Symbolism

The dying lion is shown lying on his side, with a spear piercing his body, his paw resting on a shield bearing the French fleur-de-lis, and another shield beside him with the Swiss coat of arms. His facial expression conveys pain, dignity, and courage.

Below the lion is a Latin inscription:

"Helvetiorum Fidei ac Virtuti"

("To the loyalty and bravery of the Swiss")

The names of the fallen officers are listed, along with the number of soldiers who died and those who survived.
