Whenever we speak about availing taxi or cab services, we think about the public cabs or private cab operators like Uber, Ola etc. But now the residents and tourists of Mumbai will be experiencing a new set of taxi services. Its water taxi, a unique mode of transport, inaugurated in the city.

As per the latest reports, Mr Sarbananda Sonowal, the Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways & AYUSH, has virtually flagged off the water taxi services in Mumbai. Mr Udhav Thackeray, the Chief Minister of Maharashtra, was also present at the inauguration. He had earlier inaugurated the Belapur Jetty, from where the first water taxi took off.

What is in for the travellers?

Travellers, availing the water taxi services, can reduce their travelling time from Navi Mumbai to the Gateway of India. It will be only be a 30 minutes travel, reducing almost 3 hours of journey.

The water taxi services will also operate to other locations of Mumbai like Elephanta Island, Belapur, Nerul, and Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust. The journey will be faster, comfortable, stress-free and eco-friendly.

How much will be the fare and how to book the travels?

1. INR 1210 - From the Domestic Cruise Terminal (DCT) to Belapur and vice versa

2. INR 2000 - From DCT to Dharamtar, travelling time being 55 minutes

3. INR 200 - From DCT to Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust, travelling time being 20 minutes

Or else, you can also purchase a monthly pass for speed boats. The fare will be INR 12100.

Interesting Facts about the project

About INR 8.37 crore has been spent on the construction of the Belapur jetty. The sponsorship for the funds is from the Sagarmala scheme of the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways.

As per the Union Minister, Mr Sonowal, “Sagarmala Programme has undertaken a range of projects across an array of categories such as port modernization, rail, road, cruise tourism, RORO & passenger jetties, fisheries, coastal infrastructure, skill development. 131 projects worth Rs. 1.05 lakh crore has been identified for implementation in Maharashtra."

Mr Sonowal specially thanked the Mumbai Maritime Board and Central & State agencies for their active involvement in completing the projects. The taxi services will bring in considerable boost in the tourism sector. It will also benefit the locals by generating multiple avenues of employment.
