Nilshi – The Best YMCA campsite in India

Located 82 kilometers away from Pune, surrounded by the Andhra River, is the Nilshi YMCA international camp. The camp is known for the various adventure activities it provides along with its facilities. We spent 4 days at the camp and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.

We reached Pune in the afternoon and made a prior cab booking. We reached Nilshi by tea time. We were warmly welcomed by the staff and 2 adorable dogs. The road leading to the campsite is beautifully covered by a canopy of trees. We settled into our tents, freshened up and enjoyed the camp fire. We hit the bed early since we had an early morning the next day.

How we spent our time in Nilshi:

Day 1:

We hit the road to go to the famed Karla and Bhaja caves. Bhaja caves are located 400 feet above the Bhaja village whereas Karla caves are located in the Karli village. Both the caves are rock cut Buddhist cave shrines, which house the stupas. Both the caves require quite a bit of walking, but they offer a panoramic view of the sahayadri’s. On our way back to Nilshi, we caught the beautiful sunset.

Day 2:

After being on the road the whole day, we decided to soak into the adventure sprit by exploring the range of activities on offer in the camp. We went kayaking and swimming in the Andhra River. The water was amazing and all that flapping around in the water, just zaps out your energy. We were roaring to go have our lunch. After lunch we had a nice long siesta and then we were off rock climbing on the artificial wall. The wall was not very challenging but it did give a tough fight. We then went for a long walk to explore the adjoining areas. The area was barren and you could see the river bend. It was dark by the time we walked back to the camp. The pathway was lit by hundreds of fireflies. Watching them twinkle like stars just lifts your spirits!

Day 3:

The third day was a day to challenge our trekking skills. We went for a long trek to one of the smalls hills nearby. We walked to the top of the mountain and then found our way back to camp from one of the little hamlets around. The walk was tiring and exhausting as it was really hot. We spent the afternoon lazing and playing around. Since, it was our last day at the camp; we made it memorable by staying awake the whole night telling horror stories. We ended up locking a friend up in dark room and mocking each other.

Day 4:

We left the camp by afternoon to catch the train back home. The journey back was more fun since we had a lot of tales to tell.

Things to do:

· Check out the camp, and all the things to do..

· Go to karla, bhaje and bedse caves

· Spare a day and go to Kamshet to enjoy para-gliding

· Visit Pune and Sinhagad fort

· Chill out with your friends and unwind before you get back to the city.

Nilshi is an amazing place which offers a host of facilities. It is fun place to spend your weekends, get away from the rush of city life. I would love to go back again and re-live the moments spent there with my friends.
