Best things to do in Alappuzha and sightseeing in Alappuzha

This seventh largest city of Kerala is popular for its houseboat cruises along the Kerala backwaters. Alappuzha is bedecked with lagoons, beaches and canals and offers lots of water sports such as kayaking, canoeing, sailing and water skiing, to unwind during your vacation. The backwaters also happen to be the venue for the annually celebrated (January and August) Nehru Cup Snake Boat Race, where long serpentine boats being rowed with rhythmic furor by able-bodied Malayali men, is a spectacular site to behold. Some other famous attractions include Alleppey Beach, Andhakaranazhi Beach, Vemband Lake, Mannarasala Temple and the Alappuzha Light House, which offers a stunning panoramic view of the city and the coastline, especially during sunsets. One can also take a speed boat to Pathiramanal Island, a quiet and picturesque island on the backwaters where one can witness hundreds of rare migratory birds from around the world. South India is culturally rich and its abundance can be enjoyed through its music, dance and spirituality. Many resorts organise cultural shows in the evening where one can enjoy the traditional dance of Kerala and one of the oldest theatre forms of the world, Kathakali. Places such as Thaff Delicacy, Dreamers Cafe and Restaurant, Mushroom Restaurant and Kream Korner Art Cafe are famous for delicious local, vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes. Alappuzha can be reached by air, the nearest airport being Cochin International Airport, which is 83 km from the city, while buses and trains are also available.

Alleppey Beach - Alappuzha

Also known as the 'Venice of the East', this beach is the main one of the city and known for the boat rides and entertainment on the bridge. There is also a century old lighthouse and the coir industry flourishes here. Presently, one of the most popular places for picnic by tourists, the Alleppey Beach is just beautiful. It is a strange fact how even after so many people coming here, the beach remains so clean but it is so. The pier here is a 137 year old one and the Kettuvallam boats are worth taking a ride here. Kettuvalams are very old types of rice carrying boats and the name came down from the fact that the boats were made by only tying knots of coir here.In the backwaters areas, the Kettuvalams are the renovated ones, but in the beach part these are absolutely authentic. houseboat cruises are also popular here.
From Mannarasala, it took us about 45 mins to 1 hour to reach back in Alleppey. Enroute we spent some time in a lonely 'unknown' beach located some half an hour before Alleppey. Alleppey beach was somewhat crowded with people from all walks of life gathered to spend the evening time with family & friends, as the Sun was setting behind the vast limitless expanse of the Arabian Sea. We spent some joyful time with each of us taking turns for our personal photoshoots and playing with the sea waves. Before wrapping up the trip to Alleppey, last one thing attracted my attention which was a broken, dilapidated iron bridge that stretched only by few hundred metres into the sea. I took some snaps of the bridge as addition to my travelogue. From the beach, we stratight away headed to the Alleppey bus stand to reach our next destination in Kerala , 60 kms north of Alleppey. ... Guess which one ?????

Backwater Trips - Alappuzha

The backwaters of Kerala are the premiere attraction here and Alappuzha has a lot of these beautiful attraction. As a tourist, one thing which you should never miss is an overnight cruise from Alappuzha to Alappuzha. A romantic cruise along the backwaters of Alappuzha is the most beautiful feeling you can enjoy. The romantic Punnamada and Vattakayal Lake look even more charming in the dark. You will then be taken to visit the Champakkulam Church and the ancestra havara Bhavan. Kottayan, Mankotta and Alamkadavu are other important attractions along with the sound of migratory water birds and the sight of water lilies blooming.
This is a must do if you are in allapey. Its totally worth it. Take the canoe(small country boat) if you need a true experience of the life in the backwaters. I took a full day trip(cost me Rs (900 with breakfast and lunch). I was travelling with others in my stay. The boar goes through small villages and streams and few of the views are just spectacular. The numerous tiny bridges or sight of pampa river and the tiny islands which have just 2 to 3 houses or just he view of the backwaters and the land with all the coconut trees. This is just brilliant.

Because the first thing I did on reaching Alleppey was taking a boat ride into this backwater. As much as it seems, its a true beauty. Lush green to any which side you see.

Alappuzha Beach - Alappuzha

Well i had my stay booked here in a place called Winds N Waves(Dorm) near the beach. Well i dint find the beach ok-ok. The waves are kinda rough, and the color of the water is greenish. Though i love beaches, i preferred to just stay out and peace out in the calm breeze .The small shops selling snacks r quite brilliant. There is an old bridge that is picturesque and a lighthouse which gives a birds eye view of the entire beach. There isn't a lot else to do in the beach though. Its basically to maybe just for a evening walk or a morning jog.

Alleppey Boat House - Alappuzha

This is a company providing houseboat tours and is managed by the Kerala Canoe Authorities. You can get the best inside hat it looks like a town inside a boat. You get rooms better than a holiday resort and food nothing less compared to what you get in a good restaurant. Along with that you get scenic beauty which is served as a natural combo offer. This is a must experience when you are in Alappuzha. A trip can never be completed without a houseboat cruise.
Houseboats and backwaters are a splendid combination. Its an ethereal world out there. Of the sun and the greens, of the houseboats in backwaters and the ayurvedic spas, of the girlfriends and this trip to God's own country! #DearDiaryMoment

They are a tour agency who can fix up a perfect holiday for you in a beautiful house on the Vembanada Lake. This is a 2 room apartment with a beautiful living area, kitchen and washrooms and bathroom. There is also a caretaker cum cook who specializes in Keralite cuisine and especially if you would love to taste a fresh catch of the day. The view of the lake and the places beyond are awesome. Alleppey boathouse - Alappuzha

Normally lasting for 18 to 20 hours, the house boat rides in the backwaters of Alleppey, rightfully regarded as the Venice of East, is one of the cherishable experiences of me with 3 of my friends. All meals- Lunch, evening supper, Snacks, Dinner, and the farewell breakfast- were all served on board the houseboat. You too get a chance to venture waterside markets to handpick fresh sea food ingredients such as Pamphlets, Tiger Prawns etc., which the on board cook prepares for you. The overall experience, as far as food is concerned, was truly splendid.

Nehru Trophy Boat Race The annual Nehru Trophy Boat Race takes place on the backwaters of Punnamada in Alappuzha of Kerala. The race is a rowing competition, which takes place between numerous teams who participate in this event to contend for the Nehru Trophy. The history behind the event is that, a snake boat race was conducted when Pt. Jawahar Lal Nehru visited this place. He was so impressed by the enthusiasm of the rowers that he awarded the Nehru Trophy to the winners. Since then the Nehru Trophy bears a silver model of a snake boat and is awarded to the winning team of the boat race.

Vasundhara Sarovar Premiere - Alappuzha

We were here for 2 days. This place is like a mini kerala in itself. It is the perfect amalgamation of luxury and kerala culture. It is located very strategically in Vayalar, kerala which is comparatively nearer to the Kochi airport as compared to other resorts . It is hardly 7-8 kms from Cherthala railway station as well. I was overwhelmed looking at the lush greenery and maintainence of the resort. The staff was very friendly and their services were incredible. The resort contains variety of rooms which includes the traditional heritage villas which directly open into the mighty Vembanaad lake and the floating cottages which open in their own artificially maintained lake. The food includes variety in kerala cuisine as well along with the other regular options. Every evening they have their own mini cruise which takes you over the waters of the vembanaad lake. I used to simply laze around in the hammock in the evenings which is just next to the lake. They also have a tea/coffee shop called "chaikada" where they serve complementary tea, coffee and snacks. I thoroughly enjoyed my stay here
