Best things to do in Bharatpur and sightseeing in Bharatpur

If you are looking for a rejuvenating getaway from the capital city of Delhi, Bharatpur is a great option. Very well known for Keoladeo National Park, this small town has become home to a number of homestays and guesthouses. Perfect for a couple of days to experience a mix of adventure, history and hospitality, Bharatpur is a welcome change from other crowded weekend spots. Though the best time to visit this town is during winter, early summer is a great option as well. Make sure you book your guesthouse in advance lest you miss out on a great staying option. The Keoladeo National Park is huge and will take you an entire day to explore it. Cars are not allowed inside the park, but you can either hire a bicycle or a rickshaw to take a look around the park. Cycling gives you the opportunity to discover small corners and nooks that rickshaws can't take you to. The park is perfect for birdwatchers and also wonderful to explore for photographers and nature lovers. There is not much to eat inside the park besides a few snacks, coffee and tea. Do have a meal before you head inside the park. Besides the park, you can spend the afternoon at Bharatpur National Museum or Deeg Palace. If you are short on time, you can choose to spend a little time here and most of your time at the park. Hotel Sonar Haveli is a great place to stay if you are in the mood for a luxurious holiday, or Jungle Lodge if you are looking for some quiet time.

Keoladeo National Park - Bharatpur

This is an UNESCO World Heritage Site which was once a hunting ground of the Maharajas. This place is a beautiful wetland and a land rich in the diversity of flora and fauna. Though the water supply is a standing problem but this has been compensated by many other advantages. This is also the only National Park which is surrounded by a wall which protects it from the fear of encroachment and any outside attacks. Spread over a large area, this place was legalised by the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972 and other necessary laws. This was earlier on an ordinary wildlife sanctuary but was later given the rating of a national park. Migratory birds from far- off countries and the gorgeous wild animals are worth seeing here. The animals are allowed to roam around freely within a given boundary and thus they also feel at home. Wildlife safaris are the best thing you can do over here apart from some peaceful hours of bird watching especially during the early hours of the day.
Hotel Bharatpur Ashok, the forest lodge is situated 1.8 kms inside Keoladeo National Park from the main entry gate of the bird sanctuary. The Keoladeo National Park or Keoladeo Ghana National Park formerly known as the Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary in Bharatpur, Rajasthan, India is a famous avifauna sanctuary that plays host to thousands of birds especially during the winter season. Over 230 species of birds are known to have made the National Park their home. It is also a major tourist centre with scores of ornithologists arriving here in the hibernal season. It was declared a protected sanctuary in 1971. It is also a declared World Heritage Site.[2] Keoladeo Ghana National Park is a man-made and man-managed wetland and one of the national parks of India. The reserve protects Bharatpur from frequent floods, provides grazing grounds for village cattle and earlier was primarily used as a waterfowl hunting ground. The 29 km2 (11 sq mi) reserve is locally known as Ghana, and is a mosaic of dry grasslands, woodlands, woodland swamps, and wetlands.

Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary - Bharatpur

Earlier a duck shooting ground for the Maharaja of Bharatpur, this place was later considered as a protected site. Hunting was done till the year 1964 and then a reservoir was formed on the banks of the River Gambhir and River Banganga. This area was legalized in the year 1984 as a National Park and the Keoladeo National Park is a major breeding ground of this sanctuary. The main attractions here include sambhar, chital, nilgai, egrets, cormorants, jacanas, eagles, kingfishers, cranes and others. Apart from the jungle safaris, you can also take a ride till the Shanti Sthal and then enjoy a stroll or a bicycle tour. The nearby tourist attractions include the Bharatpur Museum, Bharatpur Palace, Deeg Palace and the Lohagadh Fort.
With my trip meter reading at 301, I reached the Keoladeo National Park (Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary). It’s a quiet place with lots of greenery in & out. Spread over 29 sq. kilometers, the park extends habitat to over 230 species of migratory & local birds and a variety of animals. On top of that, authorities have let loose some options to wander the place. One can chose to take the most popular form of transport in there which is by rickshaw charging 100 bucks/hour. Apart from this one can walk around as well but that’s going to be like a 6 hour hike, not so feasible I suppose. And there’s another option, which is to take a bicycle along with some minimal fare on per hour basis. Without a doubt, I took the third option & got hold of a nice bike for myself.

Bharatpur Beach - Bharatpur

Bharatpur Beach, in my opinion, is the most beautiful beach of all in Neil Island but at the same time, it is also the most crowded of all. However, the beach has so far remained clean and scenic with limitless expanse of blue turquoise waters all around and silver white sand, which attracts thousands of tourists every day during peak seasons. Bharatpur beach is famous for it's crystal clear shallow waters which makes it an ideal destination for snorkeling, scuba diving, glass bottom boat ride (to see the rich & colourful coral without diving into the waters) etc. Thus, my wife went for the snorkeling in middle of the sea in presence of the experts, while I preferred to remain on the boat to videograph her adventure. We also went for a 30-45 mins long glass bottom boat ride deep into the sea. Propospective travelers/tourists may note that there are enough changing rooms available at the Bharatpur Beach both for gents and ladies. After changing over to dry clothes, we went on a shopping spree from the rows of street vendors on the beach selling different kinds of jewellery items & decorative pieces made out of sea shells, conch etc. We were terribly hungry after bag full of shopping, but not before my wifey made use of her bargaining skill to the best ! Neal Island doesnot have any luxury resturants but does have descent & economical eateries, mostly with asbestos/thatched roofs. We had a fish & vegetarian meal at one of those located just besides the Bharatpur Beach.

Keoladeo Bird Sanctuary Ticket Office - Bharatpur

Also known as the Ghana Bird Sanctuary or the Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary, this is an avifauna region and a major tourist attraction of Rajasthan. Bird watching and wildlife safaris are the major activities to be enjoyed here. You should come during the early hours of the day to enjoy some peaceful bird watching. Though the gates of the national park open at specific hours, the bird sanctuary keeps open right from sunrise. This is also the best time to enjoy the fresh air and the music of the birds present here. You can book your tickets and then enjoy quite a few hours here.

Hotel Spoonbill & New Spoonbill - Bharatpur

A perfect budget hotel, this is a great deal for anyone who is visiting Bharatpur. Even if you are not staying here, you can come here for breakfast or lunch. The rooms are quiet spacious and the stay is comfortable. You can also get extra cots in case you choose to stay in the same room. The food is expecially very good and the garden is very beautiful with flowering pots. The staff are very warm and welcoming and the service you get here is commendable.
All that I look for in any hotel is a basic room with a neat and clean bathroom. And for 300 rupees per day a Hotel Spoonbill fitted my budget well. As soon as I reached my room I was off to sleep to wake up to a beautiful morning.
