Elephanta Caves - Gharapuri

From gate way of india, i got ticket for elephanta caves in 150 rs up & down. Interestingly, the ticket person did try to judge me & suspected i am a terroist(OK i am exaggerating) because i was alone. But that kind off says a thing about how people around fear i think. It was half an hour ferry to reach & then a few stairs to climb up. One need to buy ticket since it is UNESCO site.

Elephanta Island - Gharapuri

It is located in East Mumbai and is popular because of the Elephanta caves, which is carved completely out of rock and is about 10kms from the east coats of Mumbai.
This island harbors the famous caves which are dedicated to the worship of the Deities of Hinduism. Previously known as Gharapuri (meaning "The City Of Caves"), the island was subsequently renamed as "The Elephanta Island" by the Portuguese, during the start of their colonial rule in India. The images of the Deities have been carved out on the cave walls and are a subject of great interest among archaeological scholars and researchers. The skill and dedication of the builders can be estimated from these sculptures as well as the other intricate designs on the walls and pillars of the cave. It brought to my mind, the impression of a temple. In fact, if you want, you are still allowed to light an earthen lamp (as is the style) in front of the Shivling. There is no reason to be extra careful (while inside the caves) as there are no underground tunnels or hidden stairways.

Cannon Hills - Gharapuri

These are hills located close to the Elephanta caves.
The hill is located at around another 3 kilometers from the foot the island, where the caves are located. You have to walk to get to that spot. But don't worry, because there are plenty of makeshift shops on the way, where you can buy a soft drink or a bottle of water and even rest awhile. Throughout my walk I was wondering at the origin of it's name. At the hilltop, I found it out. There were arrangements for two cannon guns on both sides of the island. One can get a panoramic view of the entire island from that point.
