Best things to do in Gokarna and sightseeing in Gokarna

A small town in the state of Karnataka, Gokarna is about 5 hours away from Goa. The town is considered holy for Hindus as there are some very revered temples here, especially those dedicated to Lord Shiva. The main temples are the Mahabaleshwar and the Ganpati Temple. A mini-Goa or rather Goa's hipster counterpart, Gokarna is a blessing for travellers. Its four main beaches, Om Beach, Kudle Beach, Half Moon Beach and Paradise Beach are all you need after the chaos of the cities. Spend time relaxing on the beach, indulging in one of their luxurious Ayurvedic messages or join a yoga course – everything here is an experience to remember. The shacks near the beach offer delicious continental and Indian food, and have a very relaxed environment. Though there are many wonderful places to visit around Gokarna, space out your days to enjoy the pristine sunsets and radiant sunrises the beach town offers!

Om Beach - Gokarna

Gokarna is a beautiful town which is sometomes also known as the "Khashi of the South India". The Om Beach is probably the major most attraction here and is also one of the four beautiful beaches. The other beaches here are the Kadle Beach, Half Moon Beach and the much isolated Paradise Beach. There are also a number of temples in this region and is thus a famous place also for devotees, especially hindus. Rainfall over here is quite high and it is always better to avoid this season. The places of Sannikatti and Tadadi are also major tourist attarctions very close to the Om Beach. the former is the largest salt producing region of South India and in the former you will be able to explore a fish processing industry. This industry is a result of the collaborative effort of the Indians and the Dutch. The name 'Om' has been derived from the fact that the beach makes a oerfect shape of Om, which is a holy symbol for the Hindus. It is beautifully surrounded by casuarinas and palms. This beach is not at all slanting and so swimming is the most popular activity enjoyed by tourists. Also, this is a very crowded beach and even more during the peak seasons. The Om Beach Resort on top of a hill nearby is the main place to stay up when you want to stay close to this beautiful beach.

The most popular and the longest beach in Gokarna. Good for water activities and a long stroll along the beach. Try to avoid during 1-3 PM as the scorching sun sets in then. Namaste cafe is located at the start of this beach. A nice place to hangout with friends and good food. This beach is a good spot for taking a panorama as you will get a view of the "Om" outline of the beach.

Kudle Beach - Gokarna

This is one of the four main beaches of the beach town of Gokarna. Not very far away from Bangalore, this place is thus an awesome weekend getaway. The shape of the beach is a perfect 'C' and ne side are coconut trees while on the other there are rocky outcrops. The slope of the sea is high and thus the waves are wild and high too. This makes it a perfect beach for surfing but not very safe for swimming. This is also a very cheerful place with a lot of people but still a certain peacefulness remains. The crowd is mostly of foreigners with a very few Indians and thus you can be assured about decency of people. There are not many accomodation options around this beach but the variety of food here will leave you with no complains for sure.
Amazing view of the sunset. This place has more of the younger crowd and foreigners. A good place to try out Frisbee as the winds are quite strong. Lie down on this beach after sunset and get an enchanting view of the stars. Can be reached from Zostel by walk. Will take 15 mins to reach from zostel.

Kudle beach is not directly accessible by road so you will have to either walk from Gokarna or from Om beach. Kudle is again long stretch of thin sand with fewer rocks on the shore. Still better and less dangerous place to swim plus less crowded.

Half Moon Beach - Gokarna

Another one of the four beautiful beaches of the beach town of Gokarna, this is quite a popular one. The name is derived from the fact that this beach is of the shape of a semi- circle or a half moon. The terrain here is smooth and is thus a perfect place for swimming and diving. You can either enjoy these water activities or simply laze along the beach by taking a stroll. Picnic is a common activity enjoyed here. There are no holiday resorts around this beach and the only eatery or restaurant on the beach side is the 'Shantie's'.
Hidden gem of Gokarna . Seek solitude here.It can be reached only on foot from om beach by means of a short trek from Om beach. The path starts with a short trek through a dense cover of trees and shrubs after which you have the hills to your left and the sea to your right. This will give you the thrills definitely.

Half Moon beach is smaller and less developed than Om Beach, and is reached by walking over the headland from Om. Try and connect with the nature and do not expect luxuries. Facilities are limited; there are a couple of small restaurants and a limited number of huts.

Namaste Cafe - Gokarna

This is a hotel cum restaurant right on the Om Beach. This is not a posh but a beautiful sea- facing loaction. If you want a room here they will take you to one of the pretty cottages they have for their guests. Otherwise, you can also just come for a meal or an evening snack here. They serve really good food and their specialty is their freshly brewed coffee of course. The rate of rooms as well as food is comparatively low here and the staff are extremely warm and polite too.
Superb view of Om Beach. Place to relax and chill after a day of trekking along the beaches. Diversity in the cuisine.

Gokarna Beach - Gokarna

Out of the four pristine beaches here, the Om Beach is also named as the Gokarna Beach. The name 'Om' comes from the fact that the beach makes a perfect symbol of 'Om' here. It is a beautiful place but not fit for swimming as the slope is steep and thus the waves are a bit fierce. You can enjoy a picnic here or walk along the beach admiring the beautiful sceneries filled with greenery. There is also a hill nearby on top of which the famous Om Beach Resort is situated. From on top of this hill you can get clear panoramic views of the whole town.
This is the main beach of Gokarna town and hoards of people frequent here... The locals and tourists from surrounding towns ensure that the beach is always dirty... It is quite popular with pilgrims and Indian groups but less with foreign tourists. Just the wind and the waves are cleaning this place. This beautiful site has suffered from the local building ambitions: coconut trees have been cut and the beautiful rice paddies have totally disappeared.

This serene beach stretching up to many kilometers is situated at the edge of the town. You will not find many tourists all the way out here. It is more popular with the pilgrims. Since Gokarna offers the luxury beach holiday with five tranquil beaches, the crowd gets well divided, leaving enough breathing and lazing space for each one on every beach. So you can be sure of enjoying a quiet time all by yourself on the sandy beach with a pleasant breeze.

Paradise Beach - Gokarna

the last beach on the line of the four beaches, this is the least crowded and also an isolated sort of place. This beach is also known as the Full Moon Beach because of the round shape of it. The white sands and peaceful atmosphere of this place makes it even more charming. The best thrill factor here is that this beach has no road connectivity during and immediately after the monsoons and so there are only two ways by which you can come here. One is by Motor boating from the Half Moon Beach with which this beach is partly attached and the second is by hiking from the Om Beach. The first option is however much safer. You will naturally not fnd any holiday resort around but you can of course arrange picnics here. This beach is a favourite of hippies and the backpackers who love to camp rather than sleep in soft beds while they are on a trip. This is where they often camp during the nights and you can also do the same if you feel you have not had enough fun here.
The way to the beach is through dense forests and Preete and I decided to explore this beach. Even though we were warned by the locals not to go alone. After a long walk you might realize that you aren't going anywhere and somewhat lost. My advice is to stay calm and follow the voice of the sea. That will guide you to the beach which is actually a paradise. I could take this write up off from here if you tell me that you did not like it (if only you are peace lover)

Mahabaleshwara Temple - Gokarna

This temple is the main pilgrim attraction of the temple town of Gokarna. This is a Shaiva pilgrimage site and is visited by hundreds of people every month. It is said that the Atmalinga brought here by Ravana got struck and he was unable to extract it. During his trial, the coverings of the atmalinga flew away to the temples of Murudeshwara, Gunavanteshwara and Shejjeshwara. After this, Ravana left the atmalinga here as it was Mahabala or very strong and the temple was established here. The idol inside the temple is said to be almost 15000 years old and is in a standing posture with two hands.
This temple is considered to be one of the most pious temples of Lord Shiva in not just South India but in the entire country. As the name suggests the temple here is dedicated to Lord Mahabaleshwar, an incarnation of Lord Shiva. The temple is located between the Gangavali and Agnashini river mouth. Gokarna means "cow's ears". This name is derived from the ear-shaped meeting of the two rivers. The name also comes from some stories in Hindu mythology. You should definitely interact with the locals, who will more than happily tell you the stories of the Atma Linga and Ravana from Hindu mythology. You shouldn't miss this place if you want to see typical Hindu temple rituals with religious practice performed by priests. This small town has been famed for this sacred temple. It has a small hole at its center from where devotees can see the top of the Shiv Linga. The old architecture of this place is created with granite stones and a carved stone image of Lord Shiva in a standing position is said to be 1500 years old.

OM BEACH RESORT - Gokarna

Located right on top of a hill adjacent to the Om Beach, this is a beautiful holiday resort and the personal favorite of a lot of people who have been here. The experience here is more of a home away from home. These are one storey cottage like houses with big A/C rooms and very standard amenities. The food served is tasty and cheap too. All over if you want to stay in a very nice place within a limited budget, this is the best for you.
Spacious, clean and in the lap of nature. This resort is really worth every penny we spent on it. We stayed in one of the outhouses and its beautiful with one room and one drawing room. Three of us stayed comfortably. The food was decent.

Om beach Road - Gokarna

Starting from the Mahabaleshwar Temple and then heading towards the Subhash Chowk and then along the Prem Nagar, this is one of the busiest roads of the town. The road is lined up on the sides by shops, markets and restaurants along with other small temples. The name is after the Om Beach as it almost starts from there and ends near the Kudle Beach.
Start your next morning watching the sunrise as you sit on the coast of Om beach and see the sun mature from tangerine to amber to giant yellow bulb overhead insisting that you get up and head for some breakfast. Om Beach is the most popular one among the tourists and so this place offers many boarding and lodging options. Just 6 km away from Kudle beach, Om beach offers some fun activities by the water. Though not like Goa, but you can still indulge in some water-sports here. Surfing, water-skiing, parasailing and banana boat rides are some of the options. It will be a great way to add some variety and activities in the otherwise rather laid-back itinerary. Enjoy a massage when here. This trip is pure nirvana, ain't it?
