Best things to do in Hyderabad and sightseeing in Hyderabad

Once the capital of the Nizams, it is now the joint capital of both the states of Andhra Pradesh as well as Telangana but officially is only the capital of the latter. It is one of the busiest cities of the country and crammed with people almost the whole year round. The old charm of the city is still intact and it is only because the people love their culture and heritage and are successful in keeping up with their roots. There are a number of places to visit in this city such as the Charminar, Golcoda Fort, Mecca Masjid and so many other places. The Hyderabadi Biryani is like the signature dish of this place and was also a favorite of the Nizam's. You still get the richest and most authentic taste of the dish out here. The market places are lined with sweet shops which sell the most delicious desserts for you to give your diet a toss. Shopping is also an option here.

Charminar - Hyderabad

Not only a prominent landmark of the city, but also a monument whose name is brightly mentioned in the history of Hyderabad. The name 'Charminar' is made up of two very distinct words- Char and Minar means four towers. Each part of the monument has a plaza like opening overlooked by a tower. The oldest mosque, Mecca Masjid of Hyderabad is also a part of the Char Minar. This was built by the 5th Sultan named Quli Qutb Shahi on the banks of the Musi River. It is right in the heart of the city and was taken for diving the city into four parts for government purposes in the earlier times. Some say that this monument was built as a symbol of love for his queen Bhagyavathi and some say it was built to mark the end of a fatal plague that had affected the city. There is also known to be a decret tunnel beneath the floors of the Charminar, which connects it to the Golconda Fort staright. This was the Escape route for the royals during an emergency.
Hyderabad is known for this. Good piece of structure. More interesting is the pearl and artificial jewelry market surrounding it..;)

Golconda Fort - Hyderabad

This was the capital of the Qutub Shahi dynasty and is also known as the Golla Konda Fort. It is a few kilometers from the Hussain Sagar Lake and is a huge and mighty fort till date to have been built on a hilltop. Originally known as Mankal, this was a palace built in the 12th Century in place of what was earlier a mud palace built by the king of Warangal. This was later fortified in the 14th and 17th centuries and the credit for this goes to the Bahmani Sultanate. One of the architectural marvels of Hyderabad, there are a numkber of gates out of which the most famous is the Fateh Darwaza which could be crossed by Aurangzeb once. This fort is on top of a granite hill and is itself also made of granite.

Chowmahalla Palace - Hyderabad

The official residence of the Nizams while they were the authority of the state, this ws a prominent seat of the famous Asaf Jahi Dyansty. The palace in the local language is called as the Chowmallattuu Palace. The construction began in the year 1750 by Nizam Salabhat Jung and was finally completed in the year 1864- 69 by Nizam Afzar- Ud Dawla Bahadur. Stretching from the Laad Bazar to the Aspan Chowk, the palace is a replica of the Shah's Palace in Teheran of Italy. The palace in spite of being so old has held on nicely to its former beauty and glory and is ageing with absolute grace. The detailing of the architecture and designs is fantastic. Apart from the beautoful lawns and and gardens the Tehniyat Mahal, Afzal, Mehtab and Aftab Mahals are very popular attractions in here.
After Charminar, the place to hit next was Chowmahalla Palace. It was the official residence of the Nizams'. It is said that Nizams' were considered to be one of the richest people of their time. Evidently, you can witness their life in this palace. The Calmness of the place will soothe your mind. There is a Ticket counter, a cloakroom to keep your stuff and a small cafeteria inside. You can have a royal feeling in the main durbar. It has huge yet beautiful chandeliers, the pigeons roaming will just give you the feeling of being in that era. Starting from Cutleries to clothes, from shoes to coins, everything is kept. But sadly, the maintenance is not up to the mark. The best part about this place is the Vintage Car Museum. Nizams' did have a fancy car collection. 1912 Rolls Royce Silver Ghost,A spectacular Fiat limousine, A Napier, 1952 Packard 200 Deluxe Touring Sedan (others I do not even remember) and several carriages, it is just mind blowing. The mind-boggling fact is The seventh Nizam Mir Osman Ali Khan used this Ford Tourer just for the purpose of going to the mosque at Public Gardens on a Friday. Yes, we are talking about the Nizams' who used a Rolls Royce to clean garbage over the city.

Salarjung museum possibly has the distinction of preserving the largest collection of art and artefacts. Like a new girl in town, I thought a museum would be an excellent introduction to the city but trust me, you don't need any of that. The museum is good for those who understand art and has a thing for history, but for me it was a waste of time, effort and an entire day!

In the vicinity of Charminar, are also situated the Mecca Masjid, and the Unani and Ayurvedic hospitals. While the Mecca Masjid is a huge, domed building, the two hospitals, made in the Indo- Saracenic structure ,are graceful buildings made in the Deccani( Hyderabad ) style.

Hussain Sagar - Hyderabad

This is one of the very few man- made lakes of the country and is one of the most beautiful too. The statue of Lord Buddha made in granite stands in the middle of the sparkling lake and it looks nothing less than a dream. The lake connects Hyderabad and Secunderabad and was built by Sultan Nawab Shah Wahi in the 17th century to provide the people with adequate water supply. To one part of the lake is the Lumbini Park and in the middle is this place which has a royal entrance with two lions guarding it just like many other ancient temples. on the banks of this lake are the Birla Temples all in white marble. The view of the lake becomes even better after evening with the white lights put up which make it look like a diamond necklace. You get the best views from the Tank Bund Road as well as the Neklace Road. You can cruise around here and enjoy a romantic lunch date on board only.
It was evening when I reached Hussain Sagar. It is located near the Necklace road and is very beautifully decorated and maintained. It is an artificial lake made by Hussain Shah and just in the middle of the lake, there is a huge Buddha statue. At night, the lighting of the same is mesmerising. Ferries and Jet boats are available for leisure and you can have a look at the statue by going near it by ferries.

Paradise - Hyderabad

A part of the South India Shopping Mall, this is a restaurant which is famous for its Hyderabadi Biryani and kebabs. Paradise has now become like a brand name and people refre it to Paradise biryani rather than biryani from Paradise Restaurant. The quality and quantity are both more than awesome and the taste of the juicy kebabs are simply to die for. It is a little down from the mark during the peak hours but then this happens when you have to manage such a huge place. Dine in and take away are both available.

Hyderabad International Airport - Hyderabad

This time a place beaconed more than 1000 kms away from the Indian mainland, in the middle of Bay of Bengal surrounded by beautiful coral reefs and blue turquoise sea, arising out of millions of years of tectonic distrurbances beneath the sea bed & volcanic eruptions, and we (I & my dear wifey) could not resist the overwhelming urge to visit this 'blue paradise' on earth - the Andamans. Like any other trip of mine, Bangalore was the starting point of the trip but I preferred to keep it as Hyderabad since my dear wifey came on board from Bidar only (a place 14 hours by road from Bangalore located at the northernmost tip of Karnataka & just 3 hours from Hyderabad). From Bidar, we boarded a KSRTC Volvo A/C bus to Hyderabad at about 5 in the evening, which took around 3-4 hours to Hyderbad where in turn we had a night halt till 3: 45 am of next day. We boarded a flight from Hyderabad on 14/12/2014 at 5: 45 am which was a turbo propeller powered small aircraft, to Chennai. Upon reaching Chennai at about 7 am, we had to go through a layover time of 2 hours in the airport during which we had a nice Tamilian breakfast- Masala Dosa, Sambhar, Idli and Upma. It was a sumptuous meal. Our flight took off at 10 am from Chennai and after flying for 3 hours over the vast expanse of Bay of Bengal, we landed at Port Blair at about 1 pm. It was our first experience flying for such a long time over the sea. So we were quite excited for this flight right from the beginning. The bird's eye view of the tiny to big islands covered with tropical vegetation as seen from the tiny windows of the aircraft was an astounding experience for both of us.

Makkah Masjid - Hyderabad

Makkah Masjid is also known as Mecca Masjid is the biggest and the oldest mosque in all of Hyderabad. The mosque is situated around 4 kilometres away from central Hyderabad and is a sacred Muslim pilgrimage site. It is said that the ruler of Hyderabad, Muhammad Quli Qutub Shah had soil brought over from the holy city of Mecca to build the central arch of the mosque. Hence, the name, ‘Mecca Masjid’ came to being. The Shah laid the foundation stone with is very hands and around 8000 people were needed to complete this structure. There are 15 tall arches that give support to this great hall that can accommodate about 10,000 worshippers at one time. The courtyard that surrounds the mosque is filled with pigeons and this makes for a beautiful sight. The mosque is filled with friezes and floral motifs that talk about Islam.
Makkah Masjid, is one of the oldest mosques in Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh, India, And it is one of the largest Mosques in India. Makkah Masjid is a listed heritage building in the old city of Hyderabad, close to the historic landmarks of Chowmahalla Palace, Laad Bazaar, and Charminar. Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah, the fifth ruler of the Qutb Shahi dynasty, commissioned bricks to be made from the soil brought fromMecca, the holiest site of Islam, and used them in the construction of the central arch of the mosque, thus giving the mosque its name. It formed the centerpiece around which the city was planned by Muhammad Quli Qutub Shah.

Laad Bazaar - Hyderabad

Very close to the remarkable monuments of the Charminar, Mecca Masjid as well as the Chowmahalla Palace, this is also known as the Choodi Market. This is because it is the main bangle market of the city and that laad means the laquer which is used in the making of bangles. These bangles are afterwards studded with artificial and sometimes semi- precious stones as well. The main other things sold here are zari sarees, silver ware, kalamkari items, wedding items, nirmal, bidriware, borcade, velvet and other gold and silver embroidered fabrics. The scenario here is just of old wooden buildings and burkha clad women haggling and bargaining. The shops are small and some have clean, soft cotton mattresses for customers to feel comfortable inside.
The area surrounding the Charminar leads to nearby alleys which have a quaint collection of metalware, bangles, textiles. The nearby Laad Bazaar exhibits metalware and bangles in all colours and sizes, which adorn the shops. Apparently it is here that the women of the Hyderabadi sultanate used to shop for fancy bangles.I bought a few bangles for my daughter from one of the shops. As an aside, I also discovered that in a nearby street leading to Sadar Bazaar, there was an assortment of dentists’ shops, and a large number of dentures were on display outside the shops. Quite an unexpected place for finding dentists’ shops, I must say! The main thoroughfares around Charminar are lined with shops selling jewellery, clothes and many assorted wares. There are also a number of good eateries nearby. It is implausible that a visit to Hyderabad be complete without its culinary delicacies. At a roadside shop near Laad Bazaar, I gorged on delicious Chicken 65 with Roomali Roti , priced very reasonably at Rs. 70.For those inclined for a full-fledged feast, the nearby Shadaab restaurant is highly recommended. It is interesting to note that Modernity has made inroads in the Old City too, as evidenced by a Cafe Coffee Day shop situated bang opposite Charminar! It is good to see that the old and the new coexist side by side in this city. At the end of the visit to the Old City, I politely turned down offers by the Auto rickshaw wallahs to take me to Mangatrai Jewellers, an outlet famous for another of the Hyderabadi specialities, i.e. pearls. As the Autorickshaw took me back towards my guest house, I looked back contentedly, anticipating yet another visit to the Old City in the future.

Laad Bazaar Road - Hyderabad

The Laad Bazaar or the Choodi Bazaar is the major most bangle market of the city and also known for the best wedding items. The main and most preferred entrance is from the Charminar and the road leading to the market place is known as the Laad Bazaar Road. Any kind of big cars or autorickshaws are barred from entering this place so as to keep this place a little safe and hustle free for people to walk and shop.
In the evening we walked inside Laad bazaar which is located opposite to one of the gates of Charminar and adjacent to Mecca Masjid. Women visit Laad bazaar to essentially buy colourful bangles (choodi) made of laad, handmade jewelry, local wedding items and traditional Indian dresses like Sari and salwars. Laad Bazaar is quite colourful and well lit. Do not spend too much on shopping because items are quite cheap and may not be authentic but don't forget to buy souvenirs. It is a heaven for photographer like me.

This is a park and lawn and also the graveyard for the Qutub Shahi dynasty rulers who took over Golconda after the decline of the Bahmani Sultans. They were a Shia Muslim clan of the Koyu Koyunlu Region and were from the Persian Sect and also followed the culture of the same. The founder of this dynasty was Sultan Quli Qutub Mulk who came to Delhi with his uncle for the first time and then started his journet which ended with him being the ruler of such a powerful kingdom. Later in the 1th century Aurangzeb took over them and the downfall of this dynasty took place.

Sarvi - Hyderabad

When you are in search of some yummy, authentic Hyderabadi cuisine, this is the place to Stop. Sarvi Restaurant is known to serve some of the best biryanis and kebabs in the city. They offer dine- in as well as take away but the latter is preferred more due to many reasons. First of all the space inside is small and for comfortable eating a take away is better. Again the take awy prices are cheaper and the quantity is more too. As it is their quantity is enough for two hungry souls but take away is even better. A visit to this place is a must on your trip.
The ambience is airy, well-lit and the biryani is FANTASTIC! on rest of the menu is mostly Hyderabadi, Mughlai and North Indian. For desserts, there is Khoobani ka Meetha, but you would be better advised to try their special Faluda on your way out, at their fresh juices counter next to their takeaway.

This is a modern commercial center and the most upmarket locality making the Greater Hyderabad complete. The Banjara Lake is also situated here. According to the records the present valuation of all the properties here is more than 96000 crores and thus is the richet burough in the whole country. Coco's Bar & Grill - Hyderabad

Situated in the Jubilee hills Region, this is an open air bar and restaurant with live music always available. Their specialties are steaks and barbequed stuffs and you can also come here for some drinks and hangout with friends. The cool breeze and open air setting is what pulls customers the most. The food is really good and the service is prompt too but what tops the list is the ambience.
After all that museum visits, this clearly was a breather! Good food, live music and rooftop seating, there and then I had my first perfect evening in Hyderabad.

This is an awesome amusement park near the Venkaiiah Park on the Necklace Road. This also forms the heart of the twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad and take its water sources from the very beautiful Hussain Sagar Lake. The nearest landmark is the IMAX theatre and is almost always crowded. Apart from the rides there is a lush green lawn for you to relax with your friends and family or also enjoy a nice picnic.
Jalavihar is a water park in the midst of the city. On Necklace Road.Being in the city, you can quick plan your visit here for a day. Very affordable and good for a family or friends.

Bottles And Chimneys - Hyderabad

To enoy nightlife in Hyderabad, this is one of the best options. This is a restaurant, bar as well as a pub in Peakash Nagar of the Begumpet Region and is not a very big place. In spite of this limitation they have managed to live up to the expectations with their club DJ, good food, awesome beverages and drinks and above all the soothing ambience. The staff are always very attentive and ready to help you whenever its needed.
Spacious and Bollywood music! Do I need to say more?

Karachi Bakery Hitech City - Hyderabad

Established by a Sindhi family, this bakery opened its doors in the year 1952 in the famous Mozamjahi Market. Today there's another outlet at Taj Banjara in the Banjara Hills. It's imperative that whoever comes here buys their array of freshly baked fruit biscuits and cookies produced from cashew nuts. As well as that, the Almond Marzipan, Plum cakes, Christmas puddings, rum truffles and cookies manufactured from Kesar Pista, cardamom, chocolate and ginger. The foodstuff is egg-free and as well sugar-free. Their organic bread are famous all over the city of Hyderabad.
I have just known Karachi bakery for those lovely biscuits available everywhere. This month for the first time I visited the outlet in Madhapur. The rainbow cakes, the log cakes ...OMG...There were almost N number of varieties which we fail to see at the regular cake shops too. If you are planning to take a cake for your friends or relatives as a gift do prefer taking it from there.
