Hawa Mahal - Jaipur

As one of the most distinctive part of Jaipur, Hawa Mahal located amidst the busy streets is something that cannot be missed. The grandeur of the place surely catches the attention of each one passing by. The structure is made from pink sandstone and has a honey-comb like shape that makes it all the more interesting. There are 5 storey in the monument and surely looks extraordinary. The place was built by Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh in the year 1799 to help the ladies watch all the happenings on the streets including the processions that took place from time to time. From the extreme top of the Mahal, you can have a spectacular view of the Jantar Mantar as well as City Palace. For those interested in exhibits, the good news comes in the form of a small museum within the mahal that has great paintings, ceremonial armours as well as rich relics. For the entry, move to the backside of the complex.

City Palace - Jaipur

City Palace is a name that rings a bell of amazing culture and great architecture. It is one of the must things to do in Jaipur. The palace is located in the centre of the city and is a combination of amazing courtyards, buildings and gardens. Jai Singh was the Maharaja to build the outer most wall of City Palace. However, there has been various restorations and adaptations in the following centuries till date. There are various buildings within the palace, many of which were built in the 20th century. Where architecture is concerned, it is a beautiful mix of Rajasthani and Mughal cultures. The entry gate, Virendra Pol leads to the Mubarak Mahal which has a colonial look and a mix of Islamic, European and Rajput style of architecture. Today, this place is a museum that shows various exhibits starting from royal shawls to costumes. Some other places to explore here are diwan-e-khas, diwan-i-am, the armoury and Chandra Mahal.
A well maintained heritage palace of Jaipur Royal family where you can see richness of royal era of Indian society and rich culture. A place which is good example of Indian Architecture and geometrical knowledge .

Amer Fort - Jaipur

Among the places to visit in Jaipur, missing Amer Fort exploration is almost next to impossible. The grandeur that this place shadows over the city is quite remarkable and looks more like a protective shield to Jaipur from one end. Once you reach the area and check out the fort from a distance, the picturesque image will look more like a movie scene. The fort is located outside the city away from the hustle bustle. One of the major attractions here is the Sheesh Mahal or the Palace of Mirrors that surely should be checked out once. Mirror work is embedded on the walls, pillars and the ceiling of the Mahal making it as enthralling as possible. The lush green lawn of the Amer Fort is another of the things worth a mention here. Take a walking tour, shop from the souvenir shop and take a break at the coffee shop to have a fulfilling day.

Jal Mahal - Jaipur

Jal Mahal also known as Water Palace in English is yet again one of the things to do in Jaipur. It is located in the heart of the famous Man Sagar Lake and near the cenotaphs of royal ladies and Maharanis of the city in the earlier times. Madho Singh was the one behind the formation of the Jal Mahal in the same year as that of Hawa Mahal- 1799. The idea was to get a summer resort made for the royal family. The place was also used for hunting ducks during the warm season. Under the Jal Tarang project going on currently, this place is closed for restoration.

A place where you can lost all track of time, It is basicall a summer resort for the royal family..in the middle of artificially created reservoir "Man Sagar" made in reign of Madho Singh, the place is so beautiful and serene that you can look at it for hours and still want to be there for couple of more hours. One can not enter the Mahal but can see it from far, Well it is Jaipur's own Marine Drive.

Amber Fort - Jaipur

This is one of the most magnificent forts in not only Jaipur but in the entire state of Rajasthan. The main area of the fort is covered by a royal palace which is a mix of white marble, pink and pale yellow sandstone. The palace has four parts and each of them has their personal courtyard as well. You can easily consider taking an elephant ride up and down if the budget permits. Suraj Pol is the entry gate of the fort and the main courtyard is named as Jaleb Chowk. There is another gate here called the Chand Pol as well. For those who are a little religious do not forget to check out and pray at the Siladevi Temple within the fort. Overall, the place has a spectacular architecture and the planned structure will surely mesmerize you.
Perhaps the most famous sight seeing spot in Jaipur, Amber fort is Jaipur's historical landmark and rightly so! The light shows held here are an absolute delight. Always call and confirm for the light show should there be last minute cancellations.

Amer palace/ Amber fort was my next and the last destination in Jaipur. This palace is situated on top of the hill and it offers magnificent view to all the tourists. you at least require half of the day to roam around in this palace. At the entrance there are many guides so you can hire one (recommended) because the architecture of this palace is so thoughtfully done that it is difficult to understand it by ourselves. Oh & please try to bargain if you are hiring a tour guide. There is a garden inside the palace and on the opposite sides of the garden are to similar looking small palaces. Out of the 2, one palace had mirrors all over its walls and on the other just plain cool marble. The guide explained us the reason, He said " During summer the royal family lived on one side of the garden and during winter on its other side" It was quite funny though until the guide gave us the further explanation that," because the winters were very cold & due to electricity problems the royal family lived in the palace of mirrors, they used to ignite a candle, and the reflection of that candle would be seen in the mirrors of the entire wall which would brighten up the palace" OMG ! This was plain, simple physics which I couldn't think at first. The guide also said that," As the summers were very long & hot in Jaipur the royal family lived on the other side of the garden because the material used in constructing this side of palace is always cool and therefore it saved them from the heat." OMG again! This infrastructure was a highlight of the entire Amber Fort. Within the palace, he showed me the suicide point (has the most beautiful view making it difficult to guess), the kitchen (has a pan almost the size of swimming pool), the jail for the prisoners etc. there were many many things to see inside this palace itself. When in Jaipur don't miss this place !

Jantar Mantar - Jaipur - Jaipur

Jantar Mantar is a renowned name and an attraction is Jaipur which is famous around the globe. It is adjacent to the other highlight of the city, City Palace. Maharaja Jai Singh started this observatory in the year 1728. The structure of Jantar Matar looks more like a bizzare of sculptures. Yanta Mantr a Sanskrit word is behind the name of the monument which in English means an instrument used for calculation. The place has another added point to its credit in the form of UNESCO World Heritage Site tag. Scholars were sent to foreign countries by the Maharaja before he planned to construct this observatory.
If you are a history buff, this place is for you. This is how scientists used to do there calculations back then. But do your research before you go, or hire a guide otherwise it looks like some plane wall standing nowhere for no reason.

It is a giant big clock adjacant to City Palace, it is an observatory made by Jai Singh in early 1700's and it still is the largest and most accurate clock. Amber Palace - Jaipur

Coming back from nahargarh fort, this was my next stop. Now, i have seen enough palaces. I have been to jaisalmer, udaipur, agra & i have not heard enough about this palace. The only palace comes to your mind when you think of jaipur is Hawa Mahal. So i was expecting it to be a small stop, but how i was wrong. It was magnificent. Not having done too much research sometimes do wonders. And if you are visiting jaipur, do not miss it. Palace is surrounded by fort having wall running for 12km, but king(Jai Singh II i believe, google it up) did not fight any war and surrendered.

The restaurant is open air and a perfect one for winters. Rajasthani thali is a must try at the place if you want to taste the true delicacy of the state. Some of the other entertainment opportunities include Rajasthani dancers, small stalls for snacks, shopping of Rajasthani handicrafts and acrobats. It was in 1734 when the formation of Nahargarh Fort started in the city of Jaipur which continues for over a century till 1868. The fort was made for military purposes on the northern side of the city. It is named after the Maharaja Nahar Singh. Along with the built and architecture of the fort that is worth a watch, there is a restaurant here for those who want to take a food break on their long tour to the place. Located across the road from the City Palace, Jantar Mantar, was our next destination in Jaipur. It: - Was built between 1727 and 1733. - Is the largest stone astronomical observatory in the world ! - Has the biggest sundial in the world ! - Is one of the largest and the only working observatories of the five, built by Sawai Jai Singh II (the others were built in Delhi, Mathura, Benaras and Ujjain) - Houses a large collection of around 20, huge masonry astronomical instruments, each with a specific astronomical use. The main reason to build these large stone structures on a grand scale was to enhance the accuracy of the measurements. - Has been recently (in July 2010), added to the World Heritage list, by UNESCO, as a cultural site. - According to UNESCO, the site "is the most significant, most comprehensive, and the best preserved of India's historic observatories." As listed on the National Geographic site, the other astronomical site added to the World Heritage list is part of the monuments at "The Centre of Heaven and Earth"—a sacred mountain in China's Henan Province. The site includes the Zhougong Sundial Platform and the Dengfeng Observatory, built about 700 years ago at the beginning of the Yuan Dynasty (A.D. 1271-1368) by astronomer Guo Shoujing. Amer was the capital of Rajasthan before Jaipur and is also a princely city like many other in this state. The main attraction here is the Amer or Amber fort which is a 14th century fort that was built by Maharaja Man Singh. Maharja Man Singh was the nephew of Jodha Bai, the wife of Emperor Akbar and also played a pivotal role in the army of Akbar. There is nothing you will be left to copmplain about after the royal treatment you will be welcomed with out here. Everything from the rooms to the ambience, food and beauty is just superb. A trip out here will remain etched your ind and heart forever.
I started off my trip at the must-visit Rajasthani village themed resort Chokhi Dhani. It was like Rajasthan within Rajasthan. It had a rustic look to it. There were live dance and music performances throughout the evening. I took an elephant ride and also saw a snake charmer performing. There was a puppet show, a magic show apart from the fortune-telling parrot. The whole atmosphere was lively. Dinner was served in a separate hall in the village in a Rajasthani style and with all of us wearing turbans. The food served, as you might have guessed by now, was a typical Rajasthani food. We all enjoyed it and it was the perfect way to end our evening.

Central Museum - Jaipur

The museum is a place to visit when in Jaipur and should definitely be a part of the itinerary if you are a historical buff. It is located within the Albert Hall which lies on the southern side of the city. The unique combination of North Indian architecture mixed with English style of work is something worth watching as designed by Sir Swinton Jacob. You can also see a reflection of the cultures around the globe in this museum. The museum opened in 1887. The exhibition of sculptures, tribal dresses, dioramas, carpets, paintings and musical instruments is a strong reason to visit the place. You can also find exhibit of the Egyptian mummies here at the Central Museum.
Located amidst the gardens of Ram Niwas Bagh, it is also known as Albert Hall museum. Supposed to be the oldest museum of Jaipur, it was designed by Colonel Swinton Jacob in 1876 to greet King Edward VII (Prince of Wales) on his visit to India. It houses the various treasures of the rich bygone era ! Unfortunately, when we reached this museum, we learnt that it was closed for renovation . But we did get a chance to take a quick look at it from outside. This museum has been modeled on the Victoria and Albert Museum in London and has many pillars, courtyards and arches that give it a very traditional yet elegant look. One of the unique feature of the marble pillars of this museum was that different types of leaves have been depicted on each of the pillars, which is very interesting! Laxmi Narayan Mandir - Jaipur

Also known as the Birla Temple, it is a few steps down the Moti Dungri Hill in Rajasthan. This beautiful, all- marble temple was established by B.M. Birla and it started to be called the Laxmi Narayan Temple. The temple is unlike the ancient temples and has a lot of modern touches to it. As you go inside this white beauty, you will find the idols of Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Narayan inside along with many other gods and godesses of the Hindu Religion. The walls of the temples are engraved with scripts and cerses from the Bhagavad Gita and Upanishads. There are also mythological events inscribed on the walls of this beautiful temple. A remarkable feature of this temple is that there are pictures, idols and figures of achievers, saints and great men of other religions also such as Socrates, Buddha , Zarathustra, Confucious and others.
We started the Jaipur City tour, by first visiting, the famous Laxmi Narayan temple, or Birla temple. It was built in 1988, by the Birla Group of Industries, one of the business tycoons of India. Situated just below the Moti Doongri hill, in the southern part of Jaipur, one can get a beautiful view of the Moti Dongri fort, which was built like a Scottish castle, from this place. Constructed of pure white marble and surrounded by lush green gardens, this temple is dedicated to Lord Narayan (Vishnu), the preserver and his consort, Lakshmi devi, the Goddess of Wealth. The temple has attractive stained glass windows depicting scenes from the Hindu mythology and rich carvings in pure white marble. It also portrays great historical achievers, philosophers and religious saints such as Socrates, Zarathustra, Christ, Buddha, and Confucius. The three huge domes of the temple represent the different approaches to religion. One can reach this lovely temple, easily from the city, by taking the local bus, rickshaw or taxi. When walking barefoot * inside the temple, the coolness of the marble surface felt, under my feet, evoked a feeling of deep peace, satisfaction and gratitude towards life ! *one has to walk in, barefoot, whilst entering any of the temples in India, as a sign of respect to the deities in the temple. This also contributes significantly towards maintaining the cleanliness of the temple too!

Samode Bagh - Jaipur

Samode Bagh is a lush green garden with a hotel option that is based on Mughal style designing. Apart from greenery, you will find various fountains as well as pavilions here. The bagh is located quite distant from the palace. A boundary wall which is quite tall surrounds the entire bagh. The place however, it highly commercialized and organizes dining in the garden as well as tent rooms for those who want to stay back. The gardens however can be visited with permission which is an experience in itself.
Samode bagh lies a bit far away from the palace as well as from the haveli. For some reasons, these three are built distant from one another. Built on the pattern of mughal gardens, Samode Bagh has all its features like the fountains, paviliions etc. This garden block is enclosed with a tall boundary wall. Now this place is commercialised and also being used as a hotel which provides tent-rooms and garden dining. Although one can always visit the gardens with due permissions.

Amber - Jaipur

Amber is one of the most magnificent forts in not only Jaipur but in the entire state of Rajasthan.
