The major attraction of the town of Konark, this temple is a stunning example of ancient Odisha Temple architecture. The temple was built in the 13th Century during the reign of King Narasimhavarmana I. Samba, the son of Lord Krishna was cursed by him and this made him a victim of leprosy. After this he started practising strict penace and at the end of this he attained the blessings of the Sun God. Next day when he was taking a bath in the waters of Chandrabhaga, a picture of Lord Surya floated to his hands and he took it as an instruction of the Lord. He immediately placed this image in the temple he had built. The temple is huge and is in the form of a chariot which has 12 wheels and being driven by 7 horses. The idol of the Sun God is in a standing posture and the horses are shown carrying him across the heavens. The temple was also called as the 'Black Pagoda' by the British because it was built completely of black granite.

If Jagannath temple is the white Pagoda, this is the Black Pagoda. It is an architectural wonder, and though its main sanctum had collapsed a few centuries ago and has been rebuilt, the significance of this temple has not diminished a bit. It is a heritage site declared by UNESCO and the place to be for anyone interested in archaeology.

Raghurajpur - Odisha

If you want to explore what the art of Odisha looks like, Raghurajpur is the best place to visit. This is a village hidden amidst palm and betel vines, where artists can make you get lost in the charm of their art. There you find thatched huts with outer platforms where the artists sit and do their work. These are also like their art studios where you can watch them working. Pattachitra or artwork on mud plates is the traditional part and other items of terracotta, papier mache and other stuffs are also made here. The Gotipua is the academy of dance here which polishes the art of Odissi started and nurtured by the Great Guru Shree Kelucharan Mahapatra. Other than this the worship of the loacl deity is also worth a watch here.

Some of the most amazing craftsmanship I have ever seen. Pattachitra is only one of the famous products created here. This village is home to some exotic crafts like palm leaf engravings, stone and wood carvings and cow dung and paper mache toys. Yes, cow dung! And not to mention Gotipua, the ancient dance form from which Odissi is said to have originated.

Bhubaneswar - Odisha

Named after Tribhuvan Eshwar or the 'lord of the three worlds' is the capital of Odisha, Bhubaneswar. It is set on the Mahanadi Delta but is not restricted to only coastal areas. Caves, hills, zoological parks, museums, art galleries, temples, amusement parks – you'll find all this and more at Bhubaneswar. The 180 ft tall, majestic Lingaraja Temple is the most popular in the locality. It is a sculptural feat featuring gods, goddesses, kings, queens, hunters and musicians. Lord Harihara, a union of Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu is the presiding deity. The Mukteshwar Temple is smaller in comparison to others, but is famed for its beautiful ceiling of an eight petalled lotus and a glorious archway. The other prominent temples are Brahmeswar and Rajarani. The captivating natural beauty of the Udayagiri and Khandagiri caves will compel you to lose yourself in historical wonder. However, be prepared to deal with numerous langoors jumping all over the place. The dense and tranquil forests of Nandankanan will welcome you on your way to its national park. Apart from the wildlife and the white tiger safaris, you can also spend some quiet time in the gardens and indulge in an exciting ride on the ropeway. Another wonderful site to visit is the Dhauligiri Shanti Stupa. Situated on Dhauli hills, it is a well-maintained edifice where you can visit for beautiful views and solitude. If you want to be enlightened about the tribes of Orissa make sure you visit the tribal villages, markets and the Museum of Tribal Arts & Artifacts. Among places to stay, the Mayfair Lagoon or Trident are great options, but there are also other hotels that are light on the pocket.
Widely known as the "Temple City of India," Bhubaneswar is an important Hindu pilgrimage center. Hundreds of temples dot the landscape of the Old Town, which once boasted of more than 2000 temples. The new Bhubaneswar with its modern buildings and extensive infrastructure perfectly complements its historic surroundings. With facilities to cater to every type of visitor, Bhubaneswar makes an ideal destination. My first stop was the great Lingaraja, which soars above the city of Bhubaneswar, dominating its landscape. Unlike most of the other important temples in Bhubaneswar, the Lingaraja is in active worship, and entrance to the temple compound is prohibited to non-Hindus. My second stop was the small and elegant Mukteswara temple is often referred to as the "miniature gem of Orissan architecture". The 'torana' (arched gateway) of the Mukteswara deserves special attention. Its extraordinarily beautiful sculpture includes elaborate scrolls, graceful female figures, monkeys, peacocks, and a wealth of delicate and lovely decorative detail. Another remarkable place in Bhubaneswar is the Udayagiri & Khandagiri Caves. As you approach the site, Khandagiri, with its 15 caves will be on the left. Udaygiri will be on the right. These are rock-cut shelters located six km from the city. Some of them have intricate artwork carved into the walls.

We chose the Duronto Express which is one of the handful of non-stop express trains covering major cities. It covers a fantastic route with the most varied topography and the onboard service is excellent. From 11am until sunset, the train trundles past rivers, deserts, mountains and villages and alongside pyramid-like salt mounds drying in the sunshine. Brand new Durontos – meaning "quick" in Bengali – offer tasty meals included in the ticket price, second to none cleanliness, new interiors and a sleeker design for reading lights, phone sockets, berths and bottle holders. The added benefit is that the trains are also derailment-proof. The total journey time is 21 hours and the train runs only on Sundays.

In the morning, as the hotel staff had arranged for a Panda(Priests in the Jagannath Temple). He took us to the temples( Shri Jagannath emple and Markhandeswara Temple). The serenity in these temples were just awesome. After early morning prayers, we went for street side shopping. For dinner, enjoyed a hearty "Lord Jaganath's Mahaprasada" meal followed by a comfortable overnight stay at the hotel.

This restaurant is on the CT Road of Puri and serves everything from breakfast to lunch and dinner at pocket friendly rates. Chandipur - Odisha

Chandipur is a popular beach town located about 16 km from Balasore in Odisha. The beautiful beach town on the shores of Bay of Bengal is known for its unusual tidal waves. What also greets you at Chandipur are rows and rows of fisherman going about their daily chores. A pleasant sight, it also implies delicious and fresh sea food delicacies! The sea here recedes anywhere between 1 to 5 km during ebb tide and slowly makes it way back to the coastline. It's the perfect time to collect rare sea shells that you perhaps will not find anywhere! But be cautious when exploring the beach since there is a sudden dip in the ocean floor and you may get hurt.
The speciality of this beach is that the water tides here recede from 1 to 5 km during the ebb, and return only when high tides return to the beach. This phenomenon is visible here twice a day after which, a trail of shells and driftwood are left behind. This beach also supports bio-diversity due to this speciality. Chandipur-on-sea is also the site of the Indian Army’s Integrated Test Range. This beach also supports bio-diversity due to this speciality.
