Best things to do in Pondicherry and sightseeing in Pondicherry

Pondicherry used to be India's biggest French colony, and is now the home of many French citizens. This has an influence on the architecture, food and culture. The rocky Promenade Beach is ideal to take long walks along the serene Bay of Bengal. The yellow sand, yellow sea and yellow sky merge to create a breathtaking panorama. Do indulge in scubadiving to experience the abundance of aquatic flora and fauna. The Soorya Beach Resort and Le Pondy Resort are excellent choices for staying by the sea. The city is also the location of Auroville. This innovative township houses explanatory concepts based on diverse philosophies and ideas. The Aurobindo Ashram here is a platform to seek spiritual pleasure. Through the method of integral yoga, the followers aim to become one with the divine, without renouncing the world. A distinct food culture is also notable due to the Franco-Tamil hybridity. Delectable French pastries, baguettes and appams! Seafood and continental! Savour the flavour. Oh! And I almost forgot to mention the rock-bottom prices of alcohol. For delectable food, try Cafe Xtasi and Baker Street. Try ice-cream from a wide variety at Ibaco. A visit is worth a palpable sense of contentment in India’s own French connection.

Auroville - Pondicherry

Also known as the Aurobindo Ashram or the Mother house, this is a center of meditation. This was built by Rishi Aurobindo and stresses on uniting the world with a sense of spirituality. This is a ball- shaped building with golden discs covering it. This shape is to show that the Earth is round and that people starting from one end will definitely returnn to the same place again and again. Not everyone is allowed to enetr this place randomly and if you are lucky to be permitted you are suppossed to follow a lots of rules and regulations. Once you are in front of the entrance, you are deposit your shoes there only. It is compulsory that you wear white clothes from head to toe. This is because white is the colour of peace. You will then be taken inside a large chamber where you will have to cross several stairs to reach the innermost chamber which is also the main meditation hall. Here you will find a magical ambience with so much peace. The pillars here are 12 in number and strangely do not touch the ceiling. The large flower inside also has 12 petals which depicts the 12 aspects of the 'Universal Mother'. Overall this place is immensely beautiful and soothes your mind, soul and body altogether.
It's in Tamil Nadu, 15kms from Pondicherry. There are a few things to see in the museum. The walk to the dome was tiring but the dome was an impressive piece of architecture. After the ashram, we visited the Auroville Beach. The waves are really high there, no changing rooms available. A lot of local boys staring and passing comments. Beach was fine but couldnt really enjoy because of the local crowd.

Tip - Since Pondicherry is far away, renting a bike for a day will be a good idea. The usual amount is INR 300 and you can find those shops near Mission Street. The Auroville website states - "Auroville wants to be a universal town where men and women of all countries are able to live in peace and progressive harmony above all creeds, all politics and all nationalities. The purpose of Auroville is to realise human unity." This place is situated near Pondicherry. If you are or not in spirituality, you should visit this place as it offers many other things and you would be amazed with the work behind the intense planning of this small city. Still in the making with more gardens to be built around the Matrimandir and the city is being further expanded with the help of the Government and volunteers from different countries. We had a mini meal along with Hibiscus Syrup (with Soda) and this meal was the best ever we found around Pondicherry. Also, you can find a lot of shops around for books, clothes, accessories, scents and perfumes. All of these are hand made within Auroville. The evenings have different cultural events. Something different you could try.

Sacred Heart Church - Pondicherry

This is a church which is situated on the southern boulevard of Pondicherry and is a very old one. This was definitely built by the French colonials in the Gothic style of architecture. The maintenance of this building is worth admiring because till date when we stand in front of the church it seems to be built just a few months back. The red colour of the church makes it look very bright and it also can be seen from quite a distance. The Belgium glass detailing inside the church makes it look even more beautiful. The cleanliness over here is remarkable and the beautiful Sunday Masses are worth admiring.
It was a gothic church, One of the oldest in Pondicherry. As it was Christmas the church was decorated, had nice architecture and was well maintained. Close to the Rock Beach as well.

Known for its grand neo-Gothic-style façade, the Sacred Heart Church has vaulted arches and stained glass panels, depicting scenes from Christ's life (Subbayah Saai Botanical Gardens). Immaculate Conception Cathedral with its half-moon arches, ornate columns and chandeliers is full of old-world charm.

The Promenade - Pondicherry

You cannot ask for better if you are at the Promenade. This is one of the three best hotels of Pondicherry and everything about this place is awesome. Starting from the look of the hotel to the services here everything is superb. The rooms are awesome and deluxe and views from each rooms are fantastic. Cleanliness is maintained perfectly over here and the food is very good too. This is no wonder a 5 star hotel with the kind of lawns and gardens and pools over here.

Beach Road - Pondicherry

One of the most popular avenues of the city, this is like a tribute to the Father of the Nation, Gandhiji. A walk along this road is extremely blissful with a statue of Gandhiji at one wnd which is covered with white arches. This is also a place for photography with the background of the statue. On the one side of this lane is greenery in the form of lawns and on the other is the sea which is always roaring with a gush of waves every minute. The sound of the waters and the colour of peace all around makes it really nice. Also, there are benches here for you spend some peaceful time reading a book or just relaxing. The Old Customs House is another important building here which almost looks like a haunted house after it is dark.
The rocky coastline has a picturesque view. Moreover, the seafood there is extremely tasty. You will be licking your fingers.

Mahé - Pondicherry

Situated at the mouth of the Mahé river, Mahe is a beautiful beach town in Kerala that is blessed with the best sceneries and a history that goes back more than two centuries. A former French colony, Mahé has many stunning pieces of colonial architecture. Take the Mahé walkway and continue till you reach the lighthouse to enjoy the beauty of nature just where the river meets the sea. You can also drop by the fishing harbour to witness the Malabar coastal fishing practises. Spend some idle time during the evening on the lamp lit walkway beside the river. You can also consider visiting the many Hindu temples and the Kallapalli mosque, famed for its beautiful steps. Take a walk around the town to take in the beauty of the French culture and buildings. Consider staying at the Hotel French Avenue near the Mahé Walk. Take full advantage of the cheap alcohol prices and consumer goods. This old French enclave will do nothing but please you.
Ultra cheap booze thank to Union Territory rules. Hell Yeah !!!

Paradise Beach - Pondicherry

the last beach on the line of the four beaches, this is the least crowded and also an isolated sort of place. This beach is also known as the Full Moon Beach because of the round shape of it. The white sands and peaceful atmosphere of this place makes it even more charming. The best thrill factor here is that this beach has no road connectivity during and immediately after the monsoons and so there are only two ways by which you can come here. One is by Motor boating from the Half Moon Beach with which this beach is partly attached and the second is by hiking from the Om Beach. The first option is however much safer. You will naturally not fnd any holiday resort around but you can of course arrange picnics here. This beach is a favourite of hippies and the backpackers who love to camp rather than sleep in soft beds while they are on a trip. This is where they often camp during the nights and you can also do the same if you feel you have not had enough fun here.
I guess this is the cleanest beach in pondy. Nice place to lye around and spend time in water. This place even got a changing room :-p You have to cross chennambar lake to reach here. There are options like just visit the beach and return, or spend some time and return whenever you want. But 4 is the closing time as i remember to enter the beach and play.

Puducherry - Pondicherry

The former name of Pondicherry, it was a French Colony which is now an Union Territory of the Indian Subcontinent. It is situated on the south- eastern part of the country and is full of pristine beaches and French influenced buildings all round the city. Pondicherry literally means 'A New Settlement'. The Romans visited this place during the 1st Century and ruled it for a few years and then started the brief rule of the Pallavas in the 4th Century. After this followed the Cholas and the Vijayanara rulers. Apart from all the beaches, churches and cathedrals, the Aurobindo Ashram or the Auroville is a major attraction out here. This place was started by Rishi Aurobindo and a place where you can do meditation.
The effects of Sri Aurobindo and his devotees radiate throughout Puducherry and provide areas of refreshing infrastructure in an otherwise typical Tamil Nadu city. The eastern side of town, between the canal and the meandering promenade, along the ocean is particularly enjoyable, actually quiet is the key word. Tree-lined streets of this old French Quarter hide many exclusive boutiques, restaurants and hotels. I spent hours visiting different homeopathic and Ayurvedic shops and clinics in Puducherry learning more about these ancient Indian healing forms. Fascinating to think how much these healers knew thousands of years ago while our "modern medicine" was nothing to speak of and even slightly archaic at the turn of the 20th century.

If you've had enough of the lazy life, Puducherry has a few surprises hidden away. With Temple Adventures, founded by Rob, a Tamil-speaking Australian, you can learn to scuba dive even if you've never swum a single lap in your life. The Start Diving Course, a weekend program that lets you test the water. The course can be taken in a single day or over two half-days. The latter is recommended, not because you're lazy, but because diving comes with its share of exhaustion and not to mention addiction.

L'espace - Pondicherry

This is a café and bar with the best ambience in town. This is a place owned by a group of friends and the Bohemian feel and look here grabs all eyeballs. The regular food options are nil here as they serve awesome fusion foods, snacks and pastries. They serve nice mocktails and cocktails too though the loud music may not be a good option for many people. If you are young and you love a punky ambience this place is a fantastic option for you.
Of all the cafes I chose for my taste buds, L'espace was definitely the winner. Spend a relaxed evening at this hip rooftop bar with its good music, funky art, mismatched chairs, cocktails variety, and awesome food! The cheese crepe and their white sauce pasta are worth dying for.

Sri Aurobindo Ashram - Pondicherry

This is the prime attraction of Pondicherry and is also known as Auroville. This is like a meditation center where everyone is not allowed to enter. You need strict permission to visit the place and then meditate here. The whole structure of the Ashram is of a ball which is wrapped with golden discs. you need to take off your shoes and enter this ashram with white socks. As you enter this ashram you have to cross a number of stairs and then enter the innermost chamber. Here you will see a huge flower with 12 petals and also 12 huge columns or pillars. The number 12 is a representation of the 12 common aspects of the Universal Mother. This is also the reason why this place is also known as the Mother House. The Pillars inside this chamber do not reach the ceiling. This is to depict that meditation and knowledge does not have any end to it. You find immense peace over here and also get a lot of answers for the inner questions which bother you.
I've heard many times by my school teacher about Sri Aurobindo and she suggested me once to visit the Ashram in Pondicherry. The peaceful environment, silent but yet so expressive love of people around Samadhi was heart pleasing.

Aurobindo Street - Pondicherry

The street is one of the historic locations here and is named after the great freedom fighter, Rishi Aurobindo. The road is especially famous for the Auroville and the Aurobindo Ashram. This is a beautiful place for meditation and the Auroville is more of a visitors Center and accomodation for people from all over the world. These are people irrespective of religion, caste, creed and all else. They are the ones wo are in search of ultimate peace and which does not divide people into clans according to fake aspects. Also there are other tourist resorts and restaurants along this road.
Sri Aurobindo’s Ashram was not on my list for some reason. But the first time I went there, it prompted me to visit the place the second time as well. The tranquility and simplicity of the ashram was a good change, especially if you come from a metropolitan city, this place is a good way to shut your mind off from everything. Don’t forget to grab a book from the ashram.

Serenity Beach - Pondicherry

This Serenity Beach is a ten minutes drive toward the town's north. This virgin shoreline, with its peaceful surroundings is a perfect spot to laze away your day. Beautiful and outstanding, the name "Serenity" is exceptionally selected for this shoreline. So it shouldn't come as a surprise that this shoreline is a heaven for honeymooners. You will feel casual and quiet, as well as feel a feeling of having a place. This shoreline will give you an extraordinary perspective of the Indian Ocean and you can invest your energy in a voyage. Since the shoreline is not extremely well known yet, it is detached and peaceful. So keep all of your considerations about extravagant excursions to Paris and Italy away, and make the most of your special night on Indian waters where you will get a desire for time to achieve a standstill. Comparatively this shoreline is cleaner calmer and has a popular surf school toward one side of this shoreline.
Located 8km north of the city, Serenity Beach lives up to its name and is a place where you can laze the day away . Paradise Beach, accessible only by boat, is an option too, as is the Auroville Beach, ideal for swimming with its small waves and shallow waters.
