Best things to do in Puducherry and sightseeing in Puducherry

The former name of Pondicherry, it was a French Colony which is now an Union Territory of the Indian Subcontinent. It is situated on the south- eastern part of the country and is full of pristine beaches and French influenced buildings all round the city. Pondicherry literally means 'A New Settlement'. The Romans visited this place during the 1st Century and ruled it for a few years and then started the brief rule of the Pallavas in the 4th Century. After this followed the Cholas and the Vijayanara rulers. Apart from all the beaches, churches and cathedrals, the Aurobindo Ashram or the Auroville is a major attraction out here. This place was started by Rishi Aurobindo and a place where you can do meditation.

Pondicherry - Puducherry

Pondicherry used to be India's biggest French colony, and is now the home of many French citizens. This has an influence on the architecture, food and culture. The rocky Promenade Beach is ideal to take long walks along the serene Bay of Bengal. The yellow sand, yellow sea and yellow sky merge to create a breathtaking panorama. Do indulge in scubadiving to experience the abundance of aquatic flora and fauna. The Soorya Beach Resort and Le Pondy Resort are excellent choices for staying by the sea. The city is also the location of Auroville. This innovative township houses explanatory concepts based on diverse philosophies and ideas. The Aurobindo Ashram here is a platform to seek spiritual pleasure. Through the method of integral yoga, the followers aim to become one with the divine, without renouncing the world. A distinct food culture is also notable due to the Franco-Tamil hybridity. Delectable French pastries, baguettes and appams! Seafood and continental! Savour the flavour. Oh! And I almost forgot to mention the rock-bottom prices of alcohol. For delectable food, try Cafe Xtasi and Baker Street. Try ice-cream from a wide variety at Ibaco. A visit is worth a palpable sense of contentment in India’s own French connection.
Why I love this ? That's all the post is about....Check the post.

“One More Trip”, a travel bug which keeps on biting me and scratching me head asking to go on one more trip as soon as I finish one. Rather, I should say “while ending one trip, I was planning for another trip” would be more appropriate and meaningful. Madness to travel, madness to enjoy bike ride irrespective of destination, madness to make your mark, madness to put your shoes in each and every state of India, madness to fell the sense of being nomadic ,madness to see each and every culture and madness create travelling stories !

Paradise Beach - Puducherry

the last beach on the line of the four beaches, this is the least crowded and also an isolated sort of place. This beach is also known as the Full Moon Beach because of the round shape of it. The white sands and peaceful atmosphere of this place makes it even more charming. The best thrill factor here is that this beach has no road connectivity during and immediately after the monsoons and so there are only two ways by which you can come here. One is by Motor boating from the Half Moon Beach with which this beach is partly attached and the second is by hiking from the Om Beach. The first option is however much safer. You will naturally not fnd any holiday resort around but you can of course arrange picnics here. This beach is a favourite of hippies and the backpackers who love to camp rather than sleep in soft beds while they are on a trip. This is where they often camp during the nights and you can also do the same if you feel you have not had enough fun here.
One of the finest beach in Pondicherry. The only convenient way to reach this place is to take the ferry operated by the Pondicherry tourism for a nominal fee. Food and drinks are available on the island. Changing rooms and washrooms are also available on site. Really too much crowd, so it takes too much waiting time to board a ferry. Its scenic beauty makes it wonderful, had a great time with friends there.

Eglise de notre Dame des Anges - Puducherry

Known as the Church of Our Lady of Angels, here we see some brilliant masonry and architectural styles. When the church was built, to give it the colour of absolute white marble, fine limestone was mixed with lot of egg whites to make the walls very white. The upper part of the church was made in the Ionic style and the lower part was made in the Doric Style which are both classical styles of architecture. The design of the church was inspired from another chapel of France. The painting that you see on the wall of this church was gifted by Napolean Bonaparte. In front of this church is the statue of Mother Mary with Baby Jesus in her Arms. The church is in a place from where you can see the beach as well as the bay of Bengal. There are also statues of the Joan of Arc and other saints and personalities.
A Church with French Architecture.

Eglise de Notre Dame des Anges or Church of Our Lady of Angels is located along Rue Dumas. The church stands in it’s unassuming pink. You’ll groan, as you are lead along by your religious grandmother, “Not another church.” But you will also be pleasantly surprised by the intricacy of the paintings displayed inside. It’s tangerine pillars and soft blue interiors will remind you that you are in a church modelled after a church in France but with it’s own South Indian touches.

White Town - Puducherry

This is an old French colony which has now become a posh neighbourhood og Pondicherry. The French and Roman inspired buildings here are mostly in white and mustard colour. This is one reason for which the name 'White Town' suits this place aptly. Also, this is a very popular area with all the different types of restaurants- big and small located over here. If you want to taste some of the best food and dishes of here, then you should definitely come doen to White Town. It is not that you will only get South Indian food but you get all other Indian cuisines along with French, Italian and other continental and exotic dishes in most of the restaurants of White Town.
White Town is the beauty of the Pondicherry city. This is the part of the city that you will fall in love with. The French influence is evident in the buildings and city plan. The beach guesthouse we stayed was just 10mts from Promenade . The place is a bliss and you can spend a pleasant evening walking or just seeing the tides hit the shore. Also , Since the place we stayed was just so near by, we spent mornings and evenings looking the abundance that is the Sea .

French Riviera of India. Quiet lanes with trees creating a roof ahead. Dominated with pale yellow old French buildings. A place to relax, stroll & soak it all in.

You will try and not skip on its clean brick cobbled pavements. You will fail. The French Quarter’s mustard and white mansions that hide behind bursts of pink bougainvillea vines will elude you. You will look through its glass windows expecting an 1860s scene out of Paris. You will see a couple of weights and lifting machines instead and reel with the shock of realising that this French mansion has now been converted to a gym. You will also grumble as you pass by the white, immaculate colonial mansion that is Raj Niwas (Residence of the Governor of Pondicherry) and not be able to enter it. I would suggest you take a walk through the ‘white town’ in the early mornings or late nights while the crowds are thinner. INTACH also organises Heritage Walks in the French Quarter. So get in touch with them or just rent a bicycle and hum to yourself as you zip past crumbling mansions.

Sri Aurobindo Ashram - Puducherry

This is the prime attraction of Pondicherry and is also known as Auroville. This is like a meditation center where everyone is not allowed to enter. You need strict permission to visit the place and then meditate here. The whole structure of the Ashram is of a ball which is wrapped with golden discs. you need to take off your shoes and enter this ashram with white socks. As you enter this ashram you have to cross a number of stairs and then enter the innermost chamber. Here you will see a huge flower with 12 petals and also 12 huge columns or pillars. The number 12 is a representation of the 12 common aspects of the Universal Mother. This is also the reason why this place is also known as the Mother House. The Pillars inside this chamber do not reach the ceiling. This is to depict that meditation and knowledge does not have any end to it. You find immense peace over here and also get a lot of answers for the inner questions which bother you.
A wonderful place where you can spend time with silence. You need to be barefooted to enter the place. With so many people around, you would think of a bazaar but there is serenity as well. Also, you'd be accompanied with a lot of different flowers!

Sacred Heart Church - Puducherry

This is a church which is situated on the southern boulevard of Pondicherry and is a very old one. This was definitely built by the French colonials in the Gothic style of architecture. The maintenance of this building is worth admiring because till date when we stand in front of the church it seems to be built just a few months back. The red colour of the church makes it look very bright and it also can be seen from quite a distance. The Belgium glass detailing inside the church makes it look even more beautiful. The cleanliness over here is remarkable and the beautiful Sunday Masses are worth admiring.
It was a gothic church, One of the oldest in Pondicherry. As it was Christmas the church was decorated, had nice architecture and was well maintained. Close to the Rock Beach as well.

For my family and I, what made the trip the trip was definetly the food. Since we aren’t really into medition or spas, the gastronomic journey was the highlight of our trip. The food was a delightful mix of French cuisine with Tamil flavours and vice-versa. It may sound strange at first, but trust me, you got to exeperience it to truly appreciate it’s brilliance. I won’t talk about every single meal here since this post would literally never end but two meals that definetly stood out for us were at Maison Perumal in the Indian Quarter and Tantos in Auroville. Maison Perumal, the sister property of Palais de Mahe specializes in authentic Chettinad cuisine. We ordered a portion of shrimp tossed sautéed with coriander, their classic fish curry with apams and prawns ground with spices served with rice. Though I don’t remember the exact names of the dishes, till date the flavours are etched in my memory.

Beach Rd - Puducherry

One of the most popular avenues of the city, this is like a tribute to the Father of the Nation, Gandhiji. A walk along this road is extremely blissful with a statue of Gandhiji at one wnd which is covered with white arches. This is also a place for photography with the background of the statue. On the one side of this lane is greenery in the form of lawns and on the other is the sea which is always roaring with a gush of waves every minute. The sound of the waters and the colour of peace all around makes it really nice. Also, there are benches here for you spend some peaceful time reading a book or just relaxing. The Old Customs House is another important building here which almost looks like a haunted house after it is dark.

Costal Areas; Pondicherry - Puducherry

It’s kind of chase. You witness sunrise at one place and then chase sunset from another place; a never ending process. I have witnessed sunrise-sunset from lot of places. Believe me, with every sunrise I felt the same joy, a happiness and a satisfaction. May be philosophy but yes it shows the life cycle and gives a positive attitude. Nothing is permanent, so keep moving!

Café des Arts - Puducherry

This is a 19th Century building with complete French influence and colonial art and furniture pieces. The food menu is also a complete one made of French classical dishes. It is sheer bliss to dine over here with such a lovely ambience and such good food. The Gaspacho, sandwiches, pancakes and baguettes are a must try here. This is a perfect art cafe with such a nice, vintage collection and awesome food to go perfectly with the theme.
This is a typical old Pondicherry house converted into an art cafe. The walls are lined with quirky paintings and interesting book shelves that complete the ambiance. There are clothes and bags which are available for sale. We went here for lunch. When we spoke to the waiter we found out he's not a waiter but a student from delhi who is studying french there. As a lot of french people visit the place so he's helping his friend's aunt who owns the cafe as he is fluent in french. we had a nice chat with him and he told us soon he would be working in some embassy in Delhi. The service is slow, which is where the ambiance helps. Drinks were ok, food was good. The place is a bit clumpsy but the Crowd is quite good though and the silence for having a conversation with friends makes it better.

Opp.VOC School - Puducherry

Pondicherry, or Puducherry as it is fondly called, has successfully preserved its French-ness if I must say. :p (you can still see policemen dressed in white and red uniforms). If you are planning for a 2-3 day budget getaway, this is the place (esp. if you are from Bangalore and work in IT). After a monotonous month we were really in need of a break of at least 2 days when the idea of Pondicherry popped up. Although we were a little reluctant as we thought it would be hot and humid, believe me, it wasn’t a disappointment at all. The city has maintained its beautiful architecture and integrity. The plan of the city is a French grid pattern which makes it really easy to navigate; I learnt some of the routes within a day. We took a bus to Pondi (as the bike needed some rest) - the routes are really nice, even if you suffer from motion sickness, it will pass before you know. We reached Pondi early morning, say by 5 am, and checked into Shenbaga Hotel at Mg Road, the rooms are comfy and most importantly, hotel staff is really understanding- although the checkin was at 12:00, they allocated us a room with our specification within no time. We rested for a while and then left to explore the city by 9:00am. We hired a maestro to drive around the city. Tasting French cuisine and wandering aimlessly on the beaches were on the top of our list. We first visited The Paradise beach. There is a ferry that takes you to the beach that has a few eating joints- please remember to carry enough cash- they do not accept cards anywhere. It is a nice beach but slightly crowded as it is the only beach in the city- not a place if you are looking to sit by the sea and enjoy waves silently with your beer! :-p However you can enjoy on the beach, on the sand, get drenched, and have fun- don’t forget to carry your stuff as there are properly built changing rooms. We spent some good amount of time playing around and left for the Promenade- the best buffet in town. There was a huge variety of French cuisines at the hotel and was ravishing (I prefer spicy food though and that persuaded me to re-think about going abroad :-p ). Sitting in a classy ambiance, enjoying lunch with the sound of waves (it is on the shore yayyyy!) and having a conversation is something that drives me to peace- a much needed vacation I thought. We went for a long drive after a heavy lunch on the ECR.  We also visited the serenity beach on the same day, it is little far from the city but totally worth it, very calm and quiet and a beautiful place to enjoy your evening tea. Later in the day, we visited Zuka Chocolate cafe, which has become my favorite. I am not a chocolate lover but this place made me fall in love with chocolate so much so that we visited it again the next day, the preparation, presentation, taste, chocolate – the people there know how to blend all of it together with perfection such that the chocolate melts as soon as you take it in. It truly is a kingdom of chocolate and I am still craving for some more. We shopped a little on the Nehru street as we had planned to pack light and carried only a pair of clothes, we needed to be more beach-presentable :-D It was fun. Next day, we left the hotel at 7:30, soon after having breakfast at the hotel. We had planned to visit churches- it was Sunday and we have a thing for services. The first church that we visited was – Church of the Sacred heart of Jesus, an interesting display of French architecture, mixture of colors, lovely quotes on walls, positive vibes, and a rewarding experience is what I can say about this place. I wanted to go for scuba diving, but there were no empty slots, so we continued to the Café Des Arts- do not miss this – it is a pastel tone beautiful experience – that offers pancakes to die for!!! We had Nutella pancakes and I can’t seem to forget its taste. Then we left for Auroville beach- a steep beach away from city again and not a disappointment at all, spent some good time there and continued to Auroville- an experimental town 12 km from Pondi, houses a mixed community, an aura filled with silence and greenery was a different experience. “Mantrimandir” so called a symbol of the Divine's answer to man's aspiration for perfection. People of this place believe in an unending education, of constant progress, and a youth that never ages, that is one of the reason you can easily spot people of different age groups here. After this, we went to Café Xtasi – a place that provides unlimited choices of amazing wood fired crisp and delicious pizzas (we ordered a chicken pizza and totally loved it). Second church we visited was “Immaculate Conception Cathedral“ which is right opposite to this café and so we happened to visit that too. A 300 year old church with a very big ground and a lovely architecture; it was packed when we visited, due to a gathering.  We then visited a book fair where I bought some 6-7 nice books to stock up my reading stack. Our trip was coming to an end- it was around 11 in the night and we wanted to relive the entire 2 days again, we came to seaside promenade, sat on rocks for hours, chatting. We ended our trip at a 24 hour coffee café called Le café, munching on fries and sipping coffee. We got back to Bangalore the next morning, the pondi episode was over but with this trip we brought back loadzzzz of lasting memories. Waiting to go back sooon……… P.S. you can find more pictures from our trips on instagram!! And all pictures have been clicked using my OnePlus :)

The Promenade - Puducherry

You cannot ask for better if you are at the Promenade. This is one of the three best hotels of Pondicherry and everything about this place is awesome. Starting from the look of the hotel to the services here everything is superb. The rooms are awesome and deluxe and views from each rooms are fantastic. Cleanliness is maintained perfectly over here and the food is very good too. This is no wonder a 5 star hotel with the kind of lawns and gardens and pools over here.
Sited close to the town center the promenade treats you to ocean views. Its rooftop barbecue restaurant is popular.

Cafe Xtasi - Puducherry

Awesome Pizzas. Must visit if you a pizza freak like me. Though a small restaurant, the pizza and salads taste sure makes up for the small place.

Le Hidesign Cafe - Puducherry

This is among the collections of the top things to do in Pondicherry and is a 2- storey place. The top floor has an open air seating and you can enjoy tapas and awesome coffee over here. One the ground floor you get very good French food and Italian food and the quality of food is recommended by every single person who has been here. The prices are a bit on the higher side but what you get is an absolute value for money.
Hidesign cafe is one of the best eat outs in Pondy. This cafe serves the best daiquiris-frozen/ chilled/ salted, and the sides are soo yummy you wouldn't stop with one order. The best part is that the prices are reasonable and the place itself is so cozy, you could spend time reading a book, watching tv or simply reading its unique menu-which is in the form of a newspaper. Dont miss the curried mayonnaise prawns in tomato cups. Its the best.

Red Lotus - Puducherry

Another name on the Nehru Street where you can enjoy a good stay during your visit to Pondicherry. The name Red Lotus has influences from Buddist culture. The décor is awesome and each room looks very subtle and peaceful as soon as you enter them. The rooms are quite spacious and the beds are enough for 3 people each. This is in the middle of the street but still is very peaceful and cleanliness is also looked after quite strictly. This is a budget hotel with all over the value facilties.
The Red Lotus is a boutique guest house situated in the center of Pondicherry's heritage town. It's not difficult to spot this old-merchant house in Vietnamese style, with its red doors and windows. Run by the most charming German couple, Daniela and Chris, this place transports you from the hustle of the city into tranquility. The rooms are tastefully done in a medley of colourful asian designs. The rooftop serves some delectable French breakfast with freshly-sourced products from nearby Auroville. Red Lotus provides you the luxury of a five-star without burning a hole in your pocket.

Arulmigu Manakula Vinayagar Temple - Puducherry

This is one of the most important temples of Tamil Nadu and is dedicated to the worship of the Siddhi Vinayak Lord Ganesha. This is a typical South Indian temple with gopurams and intricately designed facades and walls. They have the usual pillars and columns too. The best part is again how expert the hands of the artists are to have maintained such awesome finesse throughout. The inside of the temple is also very spacious and the temple is funded by the Pondicherry government. People come here to seek blessings for the Lord to bless them with knowledge and wisdom.
Tamil architecture; Existed since before French occupation; Visited by millions every year

Hotel Jayaram - Puducherry

A hotel in the heart of the city, this is in the Kamraj Salai region of the city. The hotel is not very posh and more like a residential building but the specialty of this place is their hospitality and service. The room service is good and a budget stay here is recommended during a visit to Pondicherry. All the other faciltiites are good too.
A nice , budget friendly hotel ...

Aurobindo Street - Puducherry

The street is one of the historic locations here and is named after the great freedom fighter, Rishi Aurobindo. The road is especially famous for the Auroville and the Aurobindo Ashram. This is a beautiful place for meditation and the Auroville is more of a visitors Center and accomodation for people from all over the world. These are people irrespective of religion, caste, creed and all else. They are the ones wo are in search of ultimate peace and which does not divide people into clans according to fake aspects. Also there are other tourist resorts and restaurants along this road.
Sri Aurobindo’s Ashram was not on my list for some reason. But the first time I went there, it prompted me to visit the place the second time as well. The tranquility and simplicity of the ashram was a good change, especially if you come from a metropolitan city, this place is a good way to shut your mind off from everything. Don’t forget to grab a book from the ashram.

Ginger Hotel Pondicherry - Puducherry

It is not really a budget hotel but a very nice place to stay. Even if you are not staying over here you can come here for a lunch and dinner. The Hotel is however anytime better than the restaurant here. The hotel has very good rooms and is very close to the main market where you can get anything you want. The staff are extremely cooperative and will also guide you for your tour at other attractions. Also, they will arrange for transport facilities and tourist guides for you. The food served as room service is also really very good
Good service and amenities at a budget price.
