Best things to do in Pushkar and sightseeing in Pushkar

Pushkar is full of colour, culture, warmth and joy! The first thing that attracts one to Pushkar is perhaps the colourful streets lined with small shops and hopeful faces. The route from Ajmer to Pushkar is stunning and unlike any other route in Rajasthan. It's quite hilly and hence surprising. Pushkar is a very small town and its first glimpse is astonishing for first timers who are expecting a big town. The town is very famous for its numerous temples, serene lake and lovely market. Do visit Pushkar Lake during the evenings, since afternoons here are quite hot unless you are visiting during peak winters. There is also a small temple next to the lake and though the temple is beautiful, the priests here make it difficult to sit in peace. They constantly pester you to perform pujas and it's a little annoying when all you want is to enjoy a few moments of silence. The market next to the temple and lake is quite fun to explore and there is tons you can take back including bangles, bandhini sarees and dupattas, palazzos and stunning silver jewellery. Don't forget to have the kachoris next to the temple since they are perhaps the best you'll have in Pushkar. Reaching Pushkar is hassle-free since there are tons of buses plying from and to major cities and it would be best to combine Ajmer and Pushkar in one trip. Do choose a traditional homestay to spend your vacation in Pushkar and you'll have an unforgettable experience!

Pushkar Lake - Pushkar

This is the holiest part of the Pushkar town in the Ajmer District of Rajasthan. This lake is surrounded by 52 ghats and over 500 beautiful temples and this proves how suitably it is known as the king of all pilgrimages. The history of the lake dates back to the 4th century but according to legendary tales it talks about a king of the 9th Century. The name of this Rajasthani King was Nahar Rao Parikar and he was out on a hunting safari and was thus chasing a boar to kill it when he came across this lake. As soon as he dipped his hands into it, he was astonished to find out that the marks of leukoderma on his hands had vanished. He thus, decided to restpre the lake and make it more glorious. It is also known that the 10th Sikh Guru, Govind Singh Ji read out the Guru Granth Sahib on the banks of this lake.
A place so calm and serene, sit on its bank or take a dip. Both are equally refreshing.

The small lake has 52 ghats. The sunset is beautiful. I have seen some decent numbers of sunsets (Goa, Diu, Hampi, Shimla, Delhi :p etc) ... This one was the most beautiful so far (Maybe because of the background music). It is like you are sitting just a little before the horizon and if you could run till the other side, and peep, you can actually see where the sun is going.

You can take a dip in the sacred lake but it is not recommended as the water is contaminated and impure. Word of caution: Steer away from guides in Pushkar. Also, do not get carried away by the temple priests who lure visitors for lump sum donation.

Savitri Temple - Pushkar

Savitri was the name of the first wife of Lord Brahma and this temple in Pushkar is popular all over the world. The temple is situated behind the Brahma Temple and is perched on the peak of a hill. You have to climb quite a number of steps to reach the main shrine. This place has a lot of importance amongst the locales especially. More than worship, the front yard of this temple is like a watch point from where you can enjoy perfect panorama of the whole Pushkar. The beauty and tranquility of this place has a magical effect on the mind and the cool breeze is soothing too.
Temple is dedicated to Savitri – Brahma’s wife and located on the highest hill above the Pushkar. Climbing 702 steps might sound challenging, but magnificent view over the city and lake worth the effort. The legend states that Savitri did not appear on time for yajna (sacrifice) performed by Brahma at Pushkar, so he had chosen the local girl called Gayatri to accompany him. Gayatri became second wife of Brahma, although annoyed Savitri forced on Brahma that she will always be worshiped before Gayatri. This tradition is still being followed while worshiping.

Brahma Temple - Pushkar

A temple situated on the banks of the beautiful Khajur River, there are still no evidences as to when this temple was built. The temple is at present almost in ruins but whatever little is left of it looks awesome till date. The hude idols and temple designs are an evidence of very early styles of temple art and designing. There is no mandap here and there are no evidences if there were any earlier on. Apart from the idol of Lord Brahma there are also a number of idols of Lord Shiva. This contradiction in the name and number majority of idols often leaves tpurists and even historians in a great confusion. The confusion is that whether this temple was actually a Brahma Temple or was it a Shiva Temple with an idol of Lord Brahma established inside it.

The most famous among all is the Brahma Temple built during the 14th century CE. It is believed that Brahma himself chose the location for his temple. Very few temples of Lord Brahma exist anywhere in the world.

Sunset Cafe Hotel - Pushkar

A romantic cafe overlooking the beautiful Pushkar Lake, this is a very calm place. The views of sunset from this café are mesmerizing and thus the name of the café. They serve light food and snacks. Their specialty is their range of hot and cold beverages though. The decor is simple and the prices are low as well. You get authentic Italian food here too.
Finish your day with jasmine tea at the Sunset Cafe as you watch the sun set on the ghats of Brahma Lake. PS Do not eat anything else there! I was quite disappointed with the food and service at the Cafe but their Jasmine Tea with Honey is really good! PPS Make sure you have Rs 5 change else you would get chocolates or candies to make up for it!

Funky Monkey Cafe Pushkar | Cafe in Pushkar Rajasthan - Pushkar

Located in the Mahadev Chowk area, this is a nice café and a great option for some tasty breakfast and delicious espresso coffee. The taste is authentic and the fruit muesli is a must taste. The décor is very modern and they also sell cakes and pastries which are all yummy. The guy at the counter making coffee is very friendly and informative and so are all other staffs. The best part is that the owner of this cafe looks after the guests himself and is very warm and welcoming.
Do not miss Funkey Monkey Cafe’s pancakes (we had nutella pancake) and lip smacking coffee no matter how full you are.
