You can then set out to explore the beauty of the region and experience the culture and lifestyle of people here. Shopping is a great option too after which you can gorge on a typical Tamil Thali and straight away head towards the beach. The confluence of the three seas make the places even more beautiful and then the nightlife of Chennai, being a metropolitan is obviously happening. Thus, everything in the same place is not only satisfying but an attraction in itself.

We checked out of the hotel and reached Madurai around 8 PM. Iyappan Dosai kadai, a small joint is known for its best dosas in Madurai. If you are in Madurai, check it out in North Mada Street near Lalitha Jewellery. Basically a mess, has now become a small joint with minimal seating. Anytime you can see crowd waiting and the smell of dosa wafting in the air. Be sure to try out their Chana Dosa, Chocolate Dosa and Goa Dosa.

We started from Suseendram and reached Kanyakumari around 1.10 PM and was still lucky enough to have the darshan of Bagavathy in her glory. Quite crowded owing to the day being a holiday, we also had crowd coming back from Sabarimala on their way home. The queue was pretty long for Vivekanada Rock and so we quit that too. Not fond of crowds, we spent a little time in Triveni Sangamam and decided to have our lunch.

Mahabalipuram - Tamil Nadu

Home to UNESCO World Heritage-listed temples, dreamy sunsets and spiritually-uplifting energy, Mahabalipuram is perhaps one of the most visited places in Tamil Nadu. Locally known as Mamallapuram, this was once the capital of the Pallava Empire. From exciting water sports to classic statuettes, the place is a delight for voyagers. Feel the shore underneath your feet at the Mahabalipuram beach and indulge in some super fun beach activities such as wind surfing and sea diving. The temples here have a special feature in common, they are built in the form of chariots with open air sanctoriums. The Shore Temple, standing strong like a marvellous rock-cut stone and overlooking the sea is known as the last creation of the Pallava kings. Another wonder in Mahabalipuram is the Panch Rathas, the five monuments that were etched out of a single rock in the 7th century. Pack your travel bags to explore the incredible Indian history by discovering the ageless stories of temples and their incredible architecture. You can get a bus from Koyembedu in Chennai or Pondicherry.

Auroville - Tamil Nadu

Also known as the Aurobindo Ashram or the Mother house, this is a center of meditation. This was built by Rishi Aurobindo and stresses on uniting the world with a sense of spirituality. This is a ball- shaped building with golden discs covering it. This shape is to show that the Earth is round and that people starting from one end will definitely returnn to the same place again and again. Not everyone is allowed to enetr this place randomly and if you are lucky to be permitted you are suppossed to follow a lots of rules and regulations. Once you are in front of the entrance, you are deposit your shoes there only. It is compulsory that you wear white clothes from head to toe. This is because white is the colour of peace. You will then be taken inside a large chamber where you will have to cross several stairs to reach the innermost chamber which is also the main meditation hall. Here you will find a magical ambience with so much peace. The pillars here are 12 in number and strangely do not touch the ceiling. The large flower inside also has 12 petals which depicts the 12 aspects of the 'Universal Mother'. Overall this place is immensely beautiful and soothes your mind, soul and body altogether.
Auroville-The Universal city is a great place one must visit in Pondicherry. We find the true human spirit alive with no man-mad contamination like caste, creed, race. You feel the utmost peace and the Matri Mandir is very beautiful and a sight worth the walk. The pottery and other handicrafts we bought were very artistic and economic too.

Chennai - Tamil Nadu

Chennai, standing as the fourth largest city in the country, is still known as Madras by many residents. Kapaleeshwar temple, though always crowded, remains a popular visiting site where one can witness southern India's multi-hued spiritual energy and the beautiful sculptures bedecking it. A place to unwind and enjoy some good street food would be Marina Beach. Those who wish to avoid the crowd, however, should pick Eliot's Beach, which is also relatively cleaner. The Anna Centenary Library is also a great refuge for peace and solace. If anything vintage charms you, make it a point to visit the 17th century British Fort, St George and the historical neighbourhood of George Town circumscribing it, now thronged with bazaars selling everything from spices to flowers and bangles. Parallel to this commercial hub is the Armenian street housing an 18th century Armenian Church. Nature lovers will dote over the Madras Crocodile Bank, where these sunbathing beauties can be seen and thoroughly learnt about. On the same lines, Arignar Anna Zoological Park is another must visit, especially for families with children, who will receive the much required infotainment. Chennai is an unforgettable site of colours and music during January when the festival Pongal is celebrated. Restaurants such as Copper Chimney, Hotel Saravana Bhavan, Dakshin remain widely known for their exquisite versatile cuisines constituting the whole of south India.

Dhanushkodi - Tamil Nadu

This is a beautiful yet abandoned temple town which is situated on the southern most part of the town of Rameshwaram. This town was washed away completely during the cyclone in the year 1964 and thus was abandoned. Touristry is budding in this place but it is advised to visit this place during the daytime only. Though there are people who term this place as the 'Ghost Town', the main reason for the caution is the lack of communication facilities from here. The nearmost town is Rameshwaram but the both of these places have no railway links at all. It is either a local bus or a car that you have to opt for to come and go back from here. The main attractions of this town are the Rama Temple and the confluence site of the Indian Ocean and the Bay of Bengal. Indian Ocean is known as Ratnakara and the Bay of Bengal as the Mahodadhi in the local language.

Matrimandir - Tamil Nadu

The name of the place means the Mother's Temple and is also known as the Auroville. The name was given after Rishi Aurobindo who believed that all human beings could overcome supernatural conciousness by rigorous meditation. It has a unique shape of a flattened sphere which is coated with golden discs and this is to represent that there are no ends and corners and that the whole world is round like a sphere here. The disadvantage is that not everyone get the permission to meditate here. This can also be taken as an advantage as you can go through the most peaceful experience due to less people here. As you start entering this place, you will have to remove your shoes and be in complete white socks. You will then have to ascend and descent steps to reach an inner chamber which again has two ramps and pillars which do not touch the ceiling. This is to give a feeling that meditation has no limit. Also the white marble is a symbol of peace here and the symbol of flower has 12 petals representing attributes of the Universal Mother. These are responsive, courage, progress, kindness, generosity, sincereity, peace, humility, gratitude, aspiration and perseverence.

Ooty - Tamil Nadu

This renowned hill station once housed the Madras Presidency during the British Rule and possesses many remnants in the form of regal looking bungalows, such as the Stone House, The Ootacamund Club, Government House and Fernhill Palace. This along with the tall pine trees in the green areas almost makes you believe you are in old English country. Ooty is also home to some of the most breathtaking lakes in the country, such as the Avalanche Lake, Emerald Lake and the popular Ooty Lake. For some adventure, one can hop on the Nilgiri Toy Train and enjoy a ride through the blue mountains, winding through dense forests, dark tunnels and valleys from Ooty to Coonoor. Ooty is heaven for nature lovers and a trek through the Mukurthi National Park will be etched on your mind for years to come, offering a stunning panorama of carpet like green hills, home to the tallest peak of the Nilgiri Range, several wildflowers and beauties such as the Nilgiri Tahr, Bengal Tiger, Indian Elephant, Leopard, Bonnet Macaque, Mouse Deer, Otter, Small Indian Civet and many more. If you still want more, you can take a mesmerising walk through the charming 19th century Government Botanical Gardens. Ooty's beauty can be explored more adventurously with everything from horse riding to hand gliding and mountain biking, all arranged by various resorts. Avid readers will be overwhelmed to visit the 19th century Nilgiri Library, sheltering around 25,000 books and hosting many events to promote reading habits among all age groups. Chocoholics should place King Star on the top of their itineraries for purchasing a plethora of delicious homemade chocolates. More delicious food from vegetarian, cafe to non-vegetarian cuisines can be enjoyed at popular places such as Quality Restaurant, Earl's Secret and Willy's Coffee Pub, which also has a commendable library for one to delve into while enjoying their drink. Witness Ooty come alive in the month of May, with its vibrant boat races and flower shows, hosted across the town.

The Queen of Hill Stations and a treasure of the Western Ghats, Ooty is impossibly beautiful and utterly mysterious all at the same time. The towering conifers and tea plantations, the colonial-era bungalows and the glittering lakes come together to make Ooty an exceptionally charming destination. While the town centre is majorly a concrete jungle, most of Udhagamandalam continues to retain its picture postcard quality. The many temples and gardens dotting the town help in amplifying its character.

I have been riding solo, with groups and with my travel partner. Riding solo requires lot of motivation and positive attitude. I would use better word, mentally strong. Travelling in group or with travel partner helps us to keep focus, especially in groups cos they have a discipline. It is good terms of safety and you won’t worry about break-downs. I share a small incident, I was riding in group through Valparai Tiger Reserve, at 1:00am (legally which is not allowed and also not safe), one of our rider’s bike got punctured. Being in group, we felt safe and helped to fix the puncture. One of us had puncture kit, one had pump while other had glue. Now, while riding solo if this incident would have happen in this kind of area, you should thank GOD if you are going to see sunrise tomorrow :D

Coimbatore - Tamil Nadu

A major city and commercial hub in Tamil Nadu, Coimbatore offers not much in terms of touristic attractions unless you're on your way to Ooty or any of the Nilgiri hill stations. Although some places might make for really interesting stopovers, such as the Kovai Kutralam Falls, Vaidehi Waterfalls and Thoonakkadavu Lake. For a taste of knowledge, there's the Gass Forest Museum, which is a natural history museum, or pay a visit to G.D. Naidu Industrial Exhibition, a science and exhibition centre which has a lot to exhibit in terms of innovation and science. The city is home to innumerable temples, some of them being Marudamalai and Velliangiri hill temple. Indira Gandhi Wildlife Sanctuary and National Park makes for an interesting visit for nature lovers. Places such as Shree Annapoorna, Junior Kuppanna and Anandhas Quality Vegetarian are well known for their Indian dishes.

So next day I was all charged up and woke up early to take a bus to Coimbatore. It was a funny sight – I almost missed the bus and the whole bus station was shouting and whistling at the bus driver to stop it while I was running behind it with a backpack on my shoulder. I finally managed to board it and after a while occupied the seat right in the front next to the conductor. A cup of filter coffee and several dosas later I reached the Coimbatore airport where I met Pankaj who had just flown in from Mumbai.

Coonoor - Tamil Nadu

Coonoor, or Kannur as it is also known is a small district that is rather famous for its production of Nilgiri tea. The best way to get there would hands down be the Heritage Train, which gives you a chance to soak in the scenic route while indulging in interesting conversations with the locals. Established in 1984, Sim's Park is a lusciously filled botanical garden. A must visit, its sloping manicured lawns hold over a thousand plant species both rare and local, and make for a perfect picnic spot. While at Coonoor, it is easy to fall in love with the place and its people, and there are a variety of places to go to if you're looking for some serenity. The Dolphin's Nose (which is a rock that literally looks like the name) is another such haven for visitors and even offers you a misted view of the Laws Falls. For every person who comes here, a trip to the magnificent tea estates is definitely in order, where you can see everything from its manufacturing to actually getting a taste of it. It'll change your perception of tea – especially if you're a tea lover! Coonoor is definitely a highlighted trip on the bucket list of everyone looking to find themselves away from the hustle of life.
The second largest hill station in the Nilgiris, second only to Ooty, Coonoor is a peaceful little town and delicately pretty. The climate here is a lot milder and a multitude of heritage hotels cater to those looking to get away from the chaos of its elder sibling. Tea and coffee plantations are in abundance and so are sightseeing opportunities in the form of parks and waterfalls.

The main attractions of this place are Sim's Park, Lamb's Rock, Dolphin's Nose and Law's Falls.

Krishnagiri - Tamil Nadu

A town and the administrative headquarters of the Krishnagiri District, this is one of the very fast growing towns in terms of business and residential development. This town is about 90 kilometers from bangalore and is known for its agriculture and rich water sources. The mangoes of krishnagiri are famous and they are sold all over India besides only South India. The water power project and dam plays an important part in the infrastructural development of this area and this is also a prime attraction here. The Fortress of Tipu Sultan is another tourist attraction here.
It's tradition to make a stop at Krishnagiri every time we make our way from Bangalore to either Tamil Nadu or Kerala. It's a nice little spot with a view of the hills. We always make it a point to have Pongal and Vada at one of the eateries. And of course, we finish with a good coffee. We reached very early and it was quiet, with just the grinding hum of the restaurants mixer, and soft tunes from a temple near by. The perfect place to set your mind straight.

Vattakanal - Tamil Nadu

A very beautiful hill station just a couple of kilometres away from Kodaikanal, this is a place you can visit throughout the year. The temperature is low throughout the year and thus do not forget to carry warm clothes whenever you go there. The rocks and watchpoints here are places from where you will get the best views of the surrounding valleys and mountains. The main points here are the Dolphin's nose and the Suicide Point.
It's everything Kodai offers (I would argue to say it offers more) after removing the throng of tourists that has changed the very landscape of culture of the place. Called the Little Israel of India, it houses some of the most beautiful locations I've ever had the blessing of visiting. I wish now that i had a pen and paper to document the places we visited. We stayed the night at a little lodge and got to witness what was easily the most stunning sun rise yet.

Along with Karnataka's Bandipur and Nagarhole and Kerala's Wayanad, Mudumalai forms part of an unbroken chain of protected areas comprising an important wildlife refuge. Overall the reserve is the best place for spotting wildlife in Tamil Nadu. The creatures you're most likely to see include deer, peacocks, wild boar, langurs and Malabar giant squirrels. There's also a significant chance of sighting wild elephants (the park has several hundred) and gaur (Indian bison).

If you love elephants, this is the place for you! This elephant sanctuary lies just a bit outside of Ooty. We went on an epic elephant ride traversing deep into the jungles, spotting a herd of wild elephants. But the best part was feeding some of the other elephants of the park sugar canes! You can also see them getting bathed and taken care of by the caretakers. Wild monkeys also bring in the element of fun and surprise throughout the park.

The life of the city of Madurai in Tamil Nadu is said to revolve around the twin temples of Madurai. These are the temples of Sundereshwarar and Meenakshi which are like a city in itself. This is because the temples' complex consists of almost around 12 gopurams of various designs and heights. The lake inside is known as the Golden Pond as this was the sam place in which a golden lotus once grew for Indira Puja. The Ayiram Kaal Mandapam is the 1000 pillar temple and is the main attraction in the complex. Pancha Rathas - Tamil Nadu

A UNESCO World Heritage Site and under the supervision of the Archeological Survey of India, this is a monument complex in the city of Mahabalipuram in the Kanchipuram District. This is a part of the Coromandel Coast on the Bay of Bengal. These are known as Pancha Rathas because each of the monuments are built in the shape of chariots or rathas. Each of these are monolitihic structures and are built of one granite block each. From beginning to end, these are the Dharmaraja ratha, Bhima Ratha, Arjuna Ratha, Nakula Sahadeva Ratha and Draupadi Ratha. These were built during the time of the Pallava Dynasty rulers Mahendravarman and his son Narasimhavarman I. These are often mistaken as temples but were never used for the purpose since these were never completed at all after the death of Narasimhavarman I. Also, this place has simply no relation with the Pandavas from Mahabharata. The names were given just to make the rathas prominent and sitinguishable.
These are 5 monolithic temples, each created in different styles. It is also known as Pancha Pandava Rathas

Pancha Rathas is a collection of five monolithic pyramidal structures named after the five Pandavas and Draupadi. An interesting aspect of the rathas is that, despite their sizes they are not assembled – each of these is carved from one single large piece of stone. In order of their size, they include the Dharmaraja Ratha, Bhima Ratha, Arjuna Ratha, Nakula Sahadeva Ratha, and Draupadi Ratha.

The MCBT (Madras Crocodile Bank Trust) is a unique, fantastic place to explore. It is a large park- well, a reptile zoo, that houses literally hundreds of crocodiles and other reptiles in natural setting habitats, and has successful conservation programs. I visited the reptile zoo in the morning, before the scorching midday heat set in, and ideal visiting times would be either in the morning or late afternoon as it is an outdoor park (although there is a great green canopy in most places that do provide shade and cool the place down a bit too!). Spending a couple of hours walking around these beautiful lush green enclosures is a refreshing and educational experience, and it's fun to watch the crocodiles! (and snakes, turtles, birds, ...) The drive to MCBT takes about an hour as it lies outside the city but the road is very picturesque as it is along the coast line. There are public buses that ply the route for budget travellers, but I recommend taking a taxi - which will cost you about 700 for a round trip on a package deal. It is more comfortable and usually also air conditioned, and also allows you to take many pit stops and capture the scenery! There are many coconut water selling stalls along the way, one can be bought and enjoyed for just 10-20 rupees! Entry tickets cost 35 rupees.

It is one of the Panchasthalam dedicated to Lord Shiva. In this the shiva linga is worshipped as Prithvi Linga. There is also a mango tree in the temple complex which has 4 long branches dedicated to the four different Vedas and is said to be around 3000 years old. Also known as the Trichy Airport, this is one of the major international airports of thre State. The airport was declared as an international airport in the year 2012. Looks like a bus stop, feels like one too, but it does a great job connecting this city with South East Asia

Kanyakumari Beach - Tamil Nadu

Kanyakumari is situated on the southernmost tip of the Indian subcontinent and witnesses the confluence of the Arabian Sea, Indian Ocean and the Bay of Bengal. The Kanyakumari Beach is a prime attraction over here and is a very clean beach. This is beach is however overcrowded all the time probably because of the prime location it is in. It is very close to the Vivekananda Rock and is best to enjoy the beauty of sunrise and sunset. This is also an ideal place for walking and pincic. The shops along the beach sell very useful herbs and oils of the ayurvedic genre.
Nothing first but the beach attracted me here and of course the huge Thiruvalluvar statue amidst the waters. It is made in memory of the poet who has contributed immensely not only to the tamil literature but to the world itself by writing Thirukkural . There is separate stairs that allows to have closer look at this ste which has 140 steps in total. each characteristic in this statues indirectly connected to the features of literature contributions he has made. So each feature of it tell you something about this life. I found it really interesting. get hold of an efficient guide who explain you each everything about this great idol.

Dhanushkodi Town - Tamil Nadu

This is an abandoned town but serves as a prominent tourist attraction mainly because of the large number of beautiful temples. These temples are majorly in ruins but the work of renovating the whole town has been started again to give this a new shape. This town is also known as the 'Ghost Town' and it is advised that you come here only during the daytime. The main reason is however that there are no proper transportation facilities and you might get struck here. Also, touristry is developing out here as more and more an more people are visiting this town. Dhanushkodi was earlier a prominent town which got completely destroyed due to the cyclone of the year 1964. The main attractions here are the Rama Temple and the confuence of Bay of Bengal (Mahodhadi) and Indian Ocean (Ratnakari).
Of all the places that I’ve been to as a traveler, Dhanushkodi will probably be more closer to my heart. Not because it was my recent travel destination, but for the history attached to it and the mesmerizing scenes and sounds that the scenic town offers you.

Dhanushkodi Beach - Tamil Nadu

This is one place from where you can reach Sri Lanka just by a ferry. The Ram Setu or the Adam's Bridge is the same we have read about in the Ramayana. This was the same bridge which the Hanumana clan made by laying bricks with the name of Lord Rama on each of them so they could cross the sea to bring back Mother Sita. The beach here is awesome and the waters on the confluence of two water bodies look beautiful. The sea here is so deep that there seems no end to it. The shores are good for relaxing or a picnic. The nearby Shiva Temple is extremely revered and this will also be a part of your jeep ride if you are exploring Dhanushkodi Town.
Dhanushkodi or Danushkodi (Tamil:தனுஷ்கோடி, 'end of the bow') is a ghost town at the south-eastern tip of Pamban Island of the Tamil Nadu state of India. Dhanushkodi is situated to the South-East ofPamban. Danushkodi is about 18 miles (29 km) West of Talaimannar in Sri Lanka. The Dhanushkodi railway line running from Pamban Station was destroyed in the 1964 cyclone and a passenger train with over 100 passengers drowned in the sea. Dhanushkodi is the one of the beautiful beach in tamilnadu.

Pamban Bridge - Tamil Nadu

This bridge is on one hand a railway bridge and on the other a road bridge which was sconstructed in the year 1914. This is however more of the Cantilever Railway Bridge which was the first one of its kind in India and was also the longest till the time the Bandra- Worli Sea link was constructed in Maharashtra. The Pamban Bridge is on the Palk Strait and connects Rameshwaram on the Pamban Island to the main subcontinent of India. This is also a prime tourist attraction since the people going and coming back from Rameshwaram have to pass this to enter Kanyakumari. This is a typical commercial bridge however there is also space for ships band barges to pass through.
Opened in 1914, it was India's first sea bridge, and was the longest sea bridge in India till 2010. The bridge connects to the Pamban island. The blue water all around bridge is just spectacular.
