Best things to do in Udaipur and sightseeing in Udaipur

Udaipur was called the most romantic spot in India by Colonel James Tod, the East India Company’s first political agent here. And it remains the same today with its old world charm, stunning palaces, bustling bazaars and serene boat rides on Lake Pichola. Towering over this lake is the mighty City Palace, which is an amalgamation of Rajasthani, Mughal and medieval architectures. With its exquisite gardens and ancient white walls, this palace draws travellers from all over. Located right in the middle of Lake Pichola is the Jag Mandir Palace, from where you can see the beautiful sunset reflected in the water. If you have a thing for automobiles, the Vintage Car Museum will make your heart leap with joy. Located near the City Palace, this museum showcases a collection of spectacular vintage cars such as Cadillac, Chevrolet and Morris. Other attractions in the city include Bada Mahal, Haldighati, Saheliyon ki Bari and Jaisamand Lake. Udaipur's cuisine reflects its Rajasthani spirit. The famous dal baati choorma and gatte ki sabzi are definite must haves. Popular eateries here include Chandni, Ambrai, Jagat Niwas Palace Hotel, Lotus Cafe and Mayur Rooftop Cafe. City Palace is a name that rings a bell of amazing culture and great architecture. It is one of the must things to do in Jaipur. Today, this place is a museum that shows various exhibits starting from royal shawls to costumes. Some other places to explore here are diwan-e-khas, diwan-i-am, the armoury and Chandra Mahal.
The largest palace complex in Rajasthan and home to the Maharaja of Udaipur. It has been turned into a Heritage Museum and one can easily feel the royalty standing in the corridors of these halls. A magnificent view of the Palace can be captured from the lake Pichola as well describing its natural essence and beauty.

This is a typical rajasthani palace except it faces lake pichola. The palace complex has some nice littles shops as well and a very amazing eatery, palki khaana, which serves amazing pizzas. Also, this is the place from where you will need to buy tickets to your boat ride to lake pichola including a stop over at Jagmandir island.

According to me, it’s the life blood of Udaipur. After watching this I felt that the city don’t even need the Beach. The almost incredible fact about it is – It’s an artificial, a man-made lake and built in a much planned way. It is embellished by three small Islands which can be reached by taking a boat ride in the lake. It takes in a Nehru park, a boat shaped restaurant and a small zoological garden for kids. The island is the famous picnic spot of Udaipur dwellers. Also round the lake you will find the awesome street food to consume. It’s a must Visit if you are in Udaipur.

This haveli museum turned from dusty and boring at the lower levels to some pretty nifty recreations in the top floor rooms. The open courtyards and terraces were the best - shady and with panoramic vistas respectively. The 1-hr long cultural performance in the evening was the best - crisp, colourful and world-class - giving us a peek into Rajasthani performing arts.

The Karni Mata Temple is on a hill top known as Machla and gives a great views of the city on one side and on the other of the beautiful Lake Pichola. This place more than anything holds a lot of religious importance for people especially for the locals. The belief in the goddess can be seen with the crowd that accumulates here from among the locals as well as other Indians. The place can either be reached through a ropeway or through the stairs.
You have to buy the tickets for ropeway to reach this place. Beautiful top view of the city and darshan of Karni mata will make your day.

The hill-top views from here are excellent - with Lake Pichola sparkling on one side and the greater city sprawling on the other. Hike there for best results (you can even take a tram), which takes you through little gardens and playgrounds. Perfect for a great sunset view :) If you like crumbling forts, poke a little further on the path and reach the end of a ruined fort wall - the views are worth it :)

Pichola - Udaipur

Pichola also known as Pichola Haveli is another of the tourist attractions that catch the attention of quite a number of people when in Udaipur. Along with a great architecture, the best part about the place is it being a luxurious hotel that gives a feel of royalty to those who become a guest. The royal treatment definitely leaves a mark in the memory of the relaxing, comforting journey you’ve had. Pichola also has a good landscape of green mountains surrounding it. There are various parts of the palace where you can choose to stay and one of the best is the Raj Niwas. The Lake Pichola and Jag Mandir Palace is easily visible, giving an experience that is worth remembering.
There are places that lose their charm quickly and then there are places that stay with you long after you have left them, Pichola is definitely in the latter class. The hotel that I was staying at (Raj Niwas) was at the lake and I couldn't have chosen a better location to stay. Morning you have your scrambled eggs with Pichola and the green mountains surrounding it greeting you and you finish your day with Roof Top Drinks with Lake Palace and Jag Mandir Palace all lit up and mirroring themselves in the Pichola Waters. Millets Of Mewar - Udaipur

This is one of the newest restaurants on the block which started just a few years back. The idea is to bring out taste but along with health in the food they serve. The twist is that they recreated all the Indian dishes by using millets as the main constituent. Also, these millets used are gluten-free in nature, vegan and highly nutritious for the body. They also have a complete menu of juices made from organic vegetables and fruits. Apart from the food which is excellent, the view here also adds to the fun and experience. It is located near a lake as well as an old temple. You can also see monkeys and parrots all around. From the second floor, City Palace is also visible. Traditional seating however dominates the first floor whereas the second floor is a modern seating arrangement.

Ambrai Restaurant - Udaipur

Ambrai Restaurant is one of the hangouts that visitors and locals usually come to in case of a memorable and romantic dinner night out. The place is located on the Lake Pichola and gives an amazing view of the serene waters as well as a beautiful sunset in case you get a chance to visit during the evening time. Along with breath-taking views, the food is scrumptious as well as in good portions. The menu has been kept interesting keeping in mind the taste of India and Rajasthan. City Palace is another of the attractions visible from here. You will definitely feel close to nature here.
1. Ambrai: (Best for:Dinner) Located on Lake Pichola, Ambrai probably has the most breathtaking view you would ever experience in your life. The menu has both Indian and International cuisines to offer but if you are a stickler as far as “genuineness” of the dish goes, my suggestion would be to try their Indian or more specifically their Mewari Menu. Khichdi, Govind gatte ki sabzi are some of the must trys. Just looking at the brightly lit lake and sipping on a glass of wine (again the menu is anything but elaborate there but it’s the thought that counts-isn’t it?) is an unforgettable experience in itself. It’s better to call them ahead and reserve a lakeside table because they are always busy. Dinner bill for two with drinks Rs.1000-1500/- P.S.: We normally carry only our phones to Udaipur so our pics may not do justice to the words on this blog. 1559 AD Restaurant - Udaipur

As the name suggests, this is one of the top notch restaurants in Udaipur. Not only Indian food, but this place is also known for Western cuisines. In fact, it is an ideal food hub for those who want a good option for lunch and desserts. The hospitality and relaxed environment is an add-on advantage. The restaurant is made in a vintage bungalow which dates back to 16th century. The ambiance cannot be described in words and the interiors of the place must be minimal but is quite extraordinary. The food is affordable compared to the experience it gives.
2. 1559 A.D.: (Best for: Lunch) This surprisingly is the only indoor place on my list. Ideal for lunches or desserts. It’s located inside a 16th century decor bungalow and the ambience is beyond description. Again won’t rate it very high on non-Indian food but their Indian non-veg dishes are a must try. This is one restaurant in Udaipur that has a Rajasthani theme and ambiance. Along with some great Rajasthani food, there are cultural shows for which the place is quite renowned. Folk dance, puppet shows and magic shows are also some of the entertainment options, visitors have. There are also shows of kids walking on a rope. The buffet system of food makes it extremely comfortable to eat. However, one thing that you need to know is that the restaurant is a little on the outskirt of the city and takes a little effort to reach. The entry calls for a grand welcome along with complimentary buttermilk. A good way to spend quality 3-4 hours with family or friends.
A Rajasthani themed restaurant, where one can get tasty food and various cultural shows like the puppet show, folk dance, hilarious magic show and a show where a kid walk on the rope. It's a buffet system so eat all you can and no one bothers. The place is located on the outskirts and pretty difficult to find but once you enter you will be welcomed by smiling faces with Buttermilk. It's place where one can spend 3-4 hrs easily with family. I don't want to pour in details of the various events but they are definitely worth trying. Next comes the best part, the dinner. Dinner is served at a big hut where one has to sit on the traditional rajasthani mats. Various dishes starting from traditional starters to main course and Dessert all will be served by smiling people. Who will practically force you to try out various dishes. Dal bati churma and Jalebi is the must try. For the diet concious people please avoid this people as these folks will just pour a glass full of desi ghee on the dishes to enhance the taste.

Saheliyon Ki Bari - Udaipur

This is one of the royal gardens in Udaipur which was made for the sole purpose of treating the royal ladies. The beauty and prettiness of the garden will surely take you off your senses. Apart from greenery and various plants and flowers there are also fountains as well as sculptures to add to the class of the place. However, the place does not allow strolling here and there for the common people.
Built for the women royalty, this quaint garden oozes prettiness in its gardens, fountains and sculptures. Too bad one can't hang out and read here :)

Shilpgram - Udaipur

Shilpgram is a cultural museum located in the heart of Udaipur. For those who love handicraft, this is the ultimate place to head to. You can see a variety of crafts and craftsmanship here. The place also holds an annual fest in December every year which is the best time to check their varied collection. Along with this, you can also find a lot of detailed work about the Rajputana clan. The traditional items are preserved well so that even the future generations can take a peek in the history of the place. The museum is well-maintained and also organizes dances at regular intervals.
What’s the use of visiting the state of Rajasthan, which is known for its ethnic culture, if we don’t get a taste of this culture? The Shilpgram will solve this problem. 3 km west of Fateh Sagar Lake, Shilpgram is a crafts village imbibing the ethnic Rajasthani culture from hosting folk dances, songs to being home to shopkeepers who sell pure Rajasthani couture. It was inaugurated by Rajiv Gandhi in 1989. It is set in the countryside, and is equally interesting. There are traditional items sold like glittering mirrored interiors, and craft exhibits. As soon as one enters, there is an excellent demonstration by traditional dancers and artisans. The best time to come is during the mela (fair) in the last 10 days of December, it forms an amazing spectacle with hundreds of artisans in attendance. The best way to reach the Shilpgram is a 30 minute auto rickshaw ride from old city which might cost up to 250 Rs.

Rupis Resort India Pvt Ltd - Udaipur

We had a sumptuous lunch at Gypsy, Jodhpur before setting out for Rupis Resorts, which was going to be our abode for the last day in Rajasthan. Rupis resort is a reasonable 12 hour- drive distance from the Udaipur airport. As a perfect close to a tiring day, we spent the night relaxing and chatting away around a bonfire.
