Best things to do in Uttara Kannada and sightseeing in Uttara Kannada

This is a district in Karnataka and is also known as the North Canara District. It is now a place of great importance in terms of tourism since there are a huge number of beaches and resorts apart from other historical locations over here. The district is surrounded by the belgaum Distruct and the State of Goa in the North, the Haveri and Dhadwad District in the east, the Shimoga and Udupi District to the south and the Arabian Sea to the west. Kumta and sirsi are the most important towns here. This district is also rich in history and was the seat of many rulers and ancient dynasties such as the Kadambas, Chalukyas, Honnavars, Mysore Sultans, Marathas, Portuguese and finally the British East India Company. Apart from the temples there are a number of beaches here including the kadle Beach, Om Beach, Paradise Beach, Half Moon Beach and other beautiful resorts and restaurants too. The Sadashivgad fort is another major tourist attraction here. Ganesh Chaturthi is the main national festival which is celebrated here and this place is also known to be the birthplace of several famous personalities.

Kudle Beach - Uttara Kannada

This is one of the four main beaches of the beach town of Gokarna. Not very far away from Bangalore, this place is thus an awesome weekend getaway. The shape of the beach is a perfect 'C' and ne side are coconut trees while on the other there are rocky outcrops. The slope of the sea is high and thus the waves are wild and high too. This makes it a perfect beach for surfing but not very safe for swimming. This is also a very cheerful place with a lot of people but still a certain peacefulness remains. The crowd is mostly of foreigners with a very few Indians and thus you can be assured about decency of people. There are not many accomodation options around this beach but the variety of food here will leave you with no complains for sure.
Calm and clear waters, relatively less crowd as compared to Om beach. Great place to stay.

Kudle beach can be reached by a short 20 minute trek from Om beach. The walk itself is not strenuous, but is lacks much shade and the heat tires you more than anything. So try to do it in the morning and work up a good breakfast appetite ! The beach is clean with lots of shacks lined up all along. In early November it is easy to find accommodation here. The sea at Kudle is much calmer than that at Om or Paradise beach and the tourists who stay here are mostly non-Indians.

You can dream big while you step towards Kuddle beach because you can self- assist yourself too almost every beach amusement there. You can question your fear factor and experience any water sport of your choice. We went for the vintage speed boat races and went for a hike on the hills which flawlessly sandwich the beach. There are also multiple number of restaurants which would serve you with your desired delicacy. Every food stall at Gokarna breaks the south Indian stereotype of serving idli-dosa day in and day out. Kuddle Beach would take good care of your taste buds.

Paradise Beach - Uttara Kannada

the last beach on the line of the four beaches, this is the least crowded and also an isolated sort of place. This beach is also known as the Full Moon Beach because of the round shape of it. The white sands and peaceful atmosphere of this place makes it even more charming. The best thrill factor here is that this beach has no road connectivity during and immediately after the monsoons and so there are only two ways by which you can come here. One is by Motor boating from the Half Moon Beach with which this beach is partly attached and the second is by hiking from the Om Beach. The first option is however much safer. You will naturally not fnd any holiday resort around but you can of course arrange picnics here. This beach is a favourite of hippies and the backpackers who love to camp rather than sleep in soft beds while they are on a trip. This is where they often camp during the nights and you can also do the same if you feel you have not had enough fun here.
It's a small beach. The trek path from half-moon and paradise is a bit risky I've heard, and is not well marked except perhaps during the peak season. Didnt' try it coz it was raining as well. You can take a boat from Kudle/Om and explore these beaches from the sea. All in all a good experience.

Paradise beach is a clean, quiet and mostly empty beach. The sand near the sea is made up of broken shells and the waves and currents are a strong, so caution is necessary. This is a beautiful secluded beach though and definitely worth a visit. The trek to the beach itself takes you through some lovely scenery, which more than makes up for the fact that part of the trip includes jumping over stones, probably getting your shoes wet, and at times crawling over rock formations ! If you aren't looking to trek it out to Paradise beach, it is a 15 minute boat ride from Om beach with the boatmen charging around Rs. 200 per person for a one way ride. Boats plying people from Om to Paradise continue until evening so you needn't be worried about getting stranded ! The walk from Om to Paradise beach takes around an hour and crosses Half Moon beach, where there are two shacks offering food, water and stay. The beach is small but clean, like most of the beaches in Gokarna. Paradise beach doesn't have any shops, shacks etc. so make sure to carry water and food with you if you plan to spend some time there. You can also set up tents and hammocks and stay at Paradise if you're looking for adventure ! A man from a nearby village comes to paradise beach everyday (and he's been coming for the last 30 years) selling pineapples, coconuts and a few biscuits.

The beauty of the place justified its name and was enough to make me forget all the cuts and marks and just get soaked-in the nature. A very small stretch of sand, a private beach amidst thick forest on three sides and rocky shore on the fourth.

Om Beach - Uttara Kannada

Gokarna is a beautiful town which is sometomes also known as the "Khashi of the South India". The Om Beach is probably the major most attraction here and is also one of the four beautiful beaches. The other beaches here are the Kadle Beach, Half Moon Beach and the much isolated Paradise Beach. There are also a number of temples in this region and is thus a famous place also for devotees, especially hindus. Rainfall over here is quite high and it is always better to avoid this season. The places of Sannikatti and Tadadi are also major tourist attarctions very close to the Om Beach. the former is the largest salt producing region of South India and in the former you will be able to explore a fish processing industry. This industry is a result of the collaborative effort of the Indians and the Dutch. The name 'Om' has been derived from the fact that the beach makes a oerfect shape of Om, which is a holy symbol for the Hindus. It is beautifully surrounded by casuarinas and palms. This beach is not at all slanting and so swimming is the most popular activity enjoyed by tourists. Also, this is a very crowded beach and even more during the peak seasons. The Om Beach Resort on top of a hill nearby is the main place to stay up when you want to stay close to this beautiful beach.
A fairly crowded beach, Om Beach, named after its peculiar shape, is the one of the most frequented beaches in this small quiet town of Gokarna. Pristine beaches lined with beach shacks and cheap accommodation, Gokarna is a beach-goer's delight. If you want your dose of adrenaline rush, Om Beach, popular for water sports like para sailing, banana boat rides, surfing and water-skiing, is just the place to be. Meeting new people, striking conversations over a few drinks and sharing stories, this beach offers it all, in addition to the scenic view unfurling right before your eyes.

Trek between Kudle and Om beach is worth it. View is good at Om beach, highlight being the 'Om' shape which gives the beach it's name. Relatively more crowd.

Reaching our final destination at the Om beach, it was the first time that I had experienced bliss in the solitude amidst the roar of the seas, the crash of the rains and the giggling of the tourists.

Jog Falls - Uttara Kannada

This picturesque waterfall is over the Sharavathi Roiver in the Shimpga District. This fall originates from the meeting point of four cascades known as Raja, Rani, Rover and Rocket. The waterfall is locally also known as the Gersuppo Falls or the Jogada Gundi. The best part about these falls is that the water does not touch the rocks when it flows down and because of this the Jog Falls has been rated as the tallest un- tiered waterfall of the country. There are also a number of points from where the view of the lush greenery everywhere is visible. The best out of all is the Watkins Point. Other than this, you can also do some adventurous hiking downslope and take a plunge into the cool waters of the fall. The Swarnavati Riverbank and the Sharavathi Valley are also breathtaking. The nearby attractions include the Dabbe Waterfalls, Linganamakki Dam, Tunga Anicut Dam, Thyvare Koppa Lion and the Tiger Reserve.
The first snap I had taken from my camera on Aug 16 2009, it was heavenly...

Kumta Beach - Uttara Kannada

This is a town and Taluka in the Uttara Kannada District of Karnataka. This is very close to the beautiful twon of Gokarna and also is an important station on the Konkan Railway line between Mumbai and Mangalore. The beach here is not like the common beaches you see where you find sands and beachside eateries. This is a more pristine yet less crowded area with shoreline covered with lush greenery. The most beautiful part about this place is the tall idol of Lord Shiva which you will find here. It looks beautiful and the backdrop of the clear sea waters and the greenery makes the place look enchantingly beautiful. People mainly come here to take strolls around this place or simply sit and spend some peaceful time on the shores of the sea.
The trek started at Kumta beach, and oh the sight which met the eyes was unlike anything else. After an extremely tiring week at the office and career confusions in mind; the sight in front of me, the noise of sea waves and the feel of sand on naked feet just shut off every other voice around, even the one in my mind. It’s so weird that sometimes, not being able to hear your own voice can feel so good.

Kadle Beach - Uttara Kannada

Also known as the Kudle Beach, this is an important beach of the beautiful town of Gokarna. Gokarna is very close to the cosmopolitan of Bangalore and thus a fantastic small trip can be arranged in no time. The crowd here is extremely decent and you will hardly find any Indians here except a few gangs and families. The beach is of the shape of the alphabet of 'C' and one side you will find lovely, green coconut palms and the perfect contrast on the other where you will see rocky outcrops. There are a number of eateries surrounding this beach and all of them serve awesome food. however, if you are planning to find a resort here, you are most unlikely to succeed in your quest.
Kadle beach awaited us post-lunch, walking along the stretch of sand leads to discovering so many virgin beaches, where you can actually meet the real inhabitants of the sea. What not we saw – jumping jellyfish, star-fishes sprawled across like stars in the sky, so many different breeds of colourful crabs and oh yea, some skulls (animals) too.

Namaste Cafe - Uttara Kannada

This is a hotel cum restaurant right on the Om Beach. This is not a posh but a beautiful sea- facing loaction. If you want a room here they will take you to one of the pretty cottages they have for their guests. Otherwise, you can also just come for a meal or an evening snack here. They serve really good food and their specialty is their freshly brewed coffee of course. The rate of rooms as well as food is comparatively low here and the staff are extremely warm and polite too.
Have sea food on your mind? This is the place to be. Every bite would do justice to each penny you spend enjoying these delicacies. But don't fill up. You are recharging , this ain't no detour !

Namaste Yoga Farm - Uttara Kannada

Right beside the Kudle Beach in gokarna is the hotel known as the Namaste Yoga Farm. It is an unit of the Namaste café which is very close to the Om Beach. The peaceful settling of this hotel is what attracts customers the most. The name is absolutely suitable as they organize expert yoga sessions for their guests and this will help in the detoxification of your mind and body during your vacation. The rooms here are in the form of cottages and this also gives it a more rustic and natural look. The greenery and the sea- view is soothing to the eyes and the service you get here is just unmatchable.
Head back to your hotel at Kudle beach. This place is a blessing. You can choose ocean view rooms or luxurious cottages. They even offer stay in enchanting tree houses in the middle of lush green trees and beautiful weather. You even have the liberty to stay in cozy bamboo huts while sleeping under the moonlit sky and watch the palm leaves sway to the music of the winds. If you are up for it, there are some regular yoga classes that you can sign up for. How much more relaxing can this break get?

Om Beach Resort Gokarna - Uttara Kannada

If you are looking for good accomodation at a low budget, there can be no better place than this. The Om Beach Resort is on top of a hill which is on one side of the Om Beach and thus the name is kept after this beautiful beach. They have cottage like rooms to accomodate guests and the best part is getting such a spacious AC room in that price range. The services of the staffs here are really good and you will definitely have a home away from home feeling during your stay in this resort.
Beautiful, pristine beaches on one side and lush green hills on the other, Om Beach Resort lies sandwiched between two forms of nature, infusing you with a freshness that rejuvenates your spirit, perfectly complimenting the spiritually historic town of Gokarna.

Kali River - Uttara Kannada

Also known as the kalinadi, this river flows through the Karwar region of the district of uttara Kannada in Karnataka. This is a very important river as it is the main source of water supply for almost 4 lakh people and also the main source of livelihood for the fishermen around this place. Tilmati Beach - Uttara Kannada

The Tilamati beach is another river and a tributary of some major river which flows through the Uttara Kannada District. This is a place of extraordinary scenic beauty although it is hidden among mountains and forests of greenery. The river banks are ideal for some early morning bird watching and the best part is that not many people till now know about it. This gives you a good opportunity to enjoy some peaceful time away from the noise of the city and very far from your busy daily life.
While wandering around, I came to the village of Majali and was just walking around the beach, when I met a local. He informed me that if I cross the mountain, I would reach a hidden black sand beach (Locally known as Tilmati Beach) in about 30-35 minutes of trekking. The trek itself was breathtaking, all along the cliffs. And when I reached the beach, I could not believe what I saw. The beach was totally secluded from the rest of the world and there was no way someone could come there unless he/she knew about it. There was no sign of someone having come there since ages and I enjoyed my time there thoroughly. Shells were strewn all across and I reveled in collecting as many as I could, being reminiscent of my childhood. I had totally lost track of time, when I realized that it would soon turn dark and I should probably get going. Surely a place to go with your loved one to spend some quality time.
