Best things to do in Quang Ninh Province and sightseeing in Quang Ninh Province
Sung Sot Cave - Quang Ninh Province
As you can see, Pete is rather enjoying the chaos, but I’m finding the beeping and the difficulty of crossing the road a bit overwhelming! Last night was also the start of the ‘Autumn Festival’ in Hanoi, a special celebration of the seasons especially for kids. This meant the streets were absolutely chocca block with people, jostling against the bikes for space! I got a bit stressed out by the heat and the inability to move, but it was cool to see. There were three caves in total, each one bigger than the last. The final one was like an enormous hall with a curved ceiling – stalagmites and stalactites everywhere, and rainwater running down the walls. It was absolutely incredible – and from the outside completely invisible! It was such a great surprise.
Ha Long - Quang Ninh Province
The legend goes that the people of Vietnam were born from the union of the dragon and the fairy. The dragon rose up from the sea and onto the Earth to unite with the fairy of the mountains. Together they created one hundred sons. When the dragon returned to the sea, fifty sons followed to live thousands of feet deep in the oceans. Once Vietnam became threatened by Chinese invaders in the North, the Gods summoned these dragons to resurface. They released jewels and jade from their mouths creating islands across the bay, forming a great wall of protection. As the mother dragon made her way onto the Earth, she fell so heavily that deep valleys formed and filled with water when she plunged back into the sea. The peaks left behind became the region known as Ha Long or “where the dragon descends to the sea.” For thousands of years ancient civilizations lived in these jungle covered limestone islands surrounding the bay. It is in this labyrinth of channels that the Vietnamese stopped invasions from its coastal neighbors. Many years later it was through these same waters that hundreds of thousands of Vietnamese refugees fled Communist rule en route to Saigon. Today communities live on and from the sea in floating villages. A UNESCO world heritage site and one of the new Wonders of the World it has become one of the biggest tourist attractions in all of Southeast Asia. Tourists cruise across the bay snapping photos, passively observing the surreal beauty and foreign way of life.

Hang Sửng Sốt - Quang Ninh Province
The 'Hang Sun Sot' or the Surprise Cave houses a popular symbol of fertility, a phallic rock illuminated by a bright pink light. It is interestingly known as 'Cock Rock' and the overexcited guides will be happy to explain the formation to you. The entrance and transfer to the caves is always covered by your boat cruise so make sure you have a confirmation.
Ha Long Natural heritage - Quang Ninh Province
The next morning, we took a 3.5 hour drive to Ha long city from Hanoi city centre, and the Ha long bay boat trip took about 5 hours journey round trip. We cruised through the emerald waters between the limestone outcrops and long sea corridors, and stopped by the Thien Cung Grotto cave in the island of Dau Go. It's quite overwhelming at first because of the well preserved statues and reliefs, as well as the natural formations of stalactites and stalagmites formed millions of years ago. This is the largest grotto in Ha long bay and also the most beautiful one, covering 3000 square meters of amazement and 25m above sea level. There are panes showing legends of how each stalactite is formed, so it was like an Art museum. The boat ride itself was very relaxing, and the top deck was open for us to chill on deck chairs and enjoy the sea breeze. The rest of the city was rather dull because of the poor visibility which rendered the famous Hanoi lake almost impossible to appreciate. The city buzz and traffic made the contrast between country and city life really apparent though, whilst the countryside was peaceful and calm, the city offered snapshots of locals entwined in their personal stories - the cyclo driver, the gold trader or that hawker peddling around makeshift stores with beads of sweat dripping down under her nón lá (leaf hat). There's never a dull moment in the city. Just standing at the corner of a random street offers you a wealth of insight, albeit not being the most pretty sight but observe and you'll get Vietnam unedited.
Hang Đầu Gỗ - Quang Ninh Province
One of the many caves on the islands of Halong Bay, Hang Dau Go is a wooden cave consisting of three chambers and is accessed by 90 steps which provide arresting views of the bay. With bright lights shining on them, the stalactites often resemble dwarves. Meanwhile, the limestone formations in the nearby Hang Thien Cung cave remind one of cauliflowers. The entrance and transfer to the caves is always covered by your boat cruise so make sure you have a confirmation.
An Bang - Quang Ninh Province
Waves crash violently, drowning the hushed screams of children who play along the shore. Hammocks sway under huts made of bamboo and woven palms that rustle in the gentle wind. Reggae music and French chatter emanate from the beachfront bar where I sit drinking from a coconut, my feet covered in sand. In the distance islands struggle to appear through a thick haze. Fishermen steer in the rough sea aboard the small round boats used by their people for centuries. Local women sweep debris from the sand, covered head to toe in garments to block the rays of the sun. A few wander my way selling peanuts and boiled quail eggs. The sun is behind me now shielding sunbathers with its dramatic shadows. I exchange shy smiles with the French bartender, who is quite possibly the most beautiful man I have ever seen. My time in Vietnam has not been easy, but today I feel filled with such hope I could explode. I feel gratitude for my incredible life that I am so blessed to be living. In one week my visa in this beautiful, complicated, fascinating country will expire. I never thought I would say this, but I don’t ever want to leave.
Quan Lạn - Quang Ninh Province
It takes at least 45 km. to leave behind the haze of Hanoi and greet the ocean breezes of Halong Bay. We luxuriously filled our lungs with the fresh sea air. We had been away from the ocean for too long. The further we sailed from the coast the slower the pace got and four hours later we landed on remote Quan Lan Island. We explored the end of the island opposite the ferry pier, past women digging clams and men breaking up road rock by hand. Continuing on for miles to the end of the road we happened on a couple of tiny remote villages. A leisurely walk amongst the fields, through the family cemetery, and along the beach is an interesting way to catch everyone in action on Quan Lan; tending the crops, collecting seafood along the shore, and making brooms or large briquettes from the coal-tar in nearby Cua Ong. The genuine friendliness and laid-back ambience of this quiet island makes it a must-visit for anyone with some extra time.
