The 3.5 kilometre long narrow stretch from the highway to the ruins meanders through tiny fishing hamlets and still backwaters docked with boats, ultimately bouncing to a rusty plaque erected by the Archaeological Survey of India in the midst of a vast space completely filled with sand. A sigh of relief indeed for the impatient adventure seeker and an excuse for the hungry history buff to devour the interesting trivia on display.
Most people know this as George Town today but the labyrinthine alleys noticed if the person takes the effort to walk through this locality definitely makes you reminisce about the 16th century colonial era gone by when this was known as Black Town instead. Situated along the eastern coastal plains, George Town is home to one of the busiest market places but effortlessly enchanting nonetheless.

This is the World's largest bas- relief and is a stone carved group opf monuments with more than 100 types of sculptures of gods, goddesses, birds, animals and other such figures. It is said that this is the place in which Arjuna from mahabharata practiced very hard penance in the prayer of Lord Shiva. This was to please the lord who could bless him with the divine bow with which he would later kill the kauravas. This is the reason this place is called as Arjuna's Penance. Also, once Bhagiratha Sage stood on one leg and prayed to the lord continuously so that he could change the course of the River Ganga and send it here. he was later blessed and he River Ganga started flowing here. Murugan Idli Shop
Murugan Idli shop is located very conveniently right on the street that lies along side Besant Nagar beach (Elliot's beach), and specializes in...(well you guessed it) idlis! Idlis contain no fat, saturated fat and no cholestrol - they're made from rice and lentils, and they're steamed - so they're incredibly healthy and also filling and sumptuous! They also have a variety of other traditional South Indian breakfast dishes including dosa and vadais. A filling meal won't set you back by much - it costs about a 100 rupees.

That wallet of your will soon start thinning down with all the trips you make to Sowcarpet.6. San Thome Church
The history of this church is fascinating. It was built in the 16th century by Portuguese explorers over the tomb of St. Thomas, an apostle of Jesus. But in 1893, it was rebuilt by the British with the status of a cathedral. The neo-gothic style of architecture is something not witnessed easily these days, which makes this one a luxury to the catholics in Chennai and all over.

As soon as I entered the place, I was mesmerised by the bohemian vibes of the place. Cholamandal Artists' Village is the "largest artists' commune in India." The artists of this village are credited to bring the Madras Movement of Art almost entirely on their own. It was nice to know that the place I was marvelling the paintings at was so significant and yet there was hardly any soul in sight.
VGP Golden Beach
This is a beach off the East Coast Road of Chennai which is known as the Injambakkum Region. The place ios popular for film shootings and the name is derived after the colour of the sands here. People do swim here but watching and enjoying the sceneries is a better thing to do here.

The noble work for the society has earned them a lot of respect and recognition and donations are what fund them throughout the year. Another name for the Arignar Anna Zoological Park, this is the first zoo in India which was originally based in Chennai better known as Madras in the 19th century. This park is spread over a large area and houses gorgeous animals out of whom none are exotic in that way. The animals are kept withing high boundary walls but are not caged at all. They are allowed to roam around freely but have limits which they are unaware of. This is to keep each of the animals safe and also the tourists safe while they are exploring the region. The Chimps or Chimpanzees among all other animals grab the most attention with its humour.
