Cliffs of Moher
The next day we saw the cliffs of Moher which has an amazing view and an observation tower. The cliffs take their name from an old promontory fort called Mothar or Moher, which once stood on Hag's Head, the southernmost point of the cliffs, now the site of Moher Tower. The cliffs consist mainly of beds of Namurian shale and sandstone with the oldest rocks being found at the bottom of the cliffs. It is possible to see 300-million-year-old river channels cutting through, forming unconformities at the base of the cliffs. This gave the rocks an ancient yet magical feelingThere are an estimated 30,000 birds living on the cliffs, representing more than 20 species. These include Atlantic puffins, which live in large colonies at isolated parts of the cliffs and on the small Goat Island, and razorbills. The site is an Important Bird Area.We spent about one and a half hour there. I did not want to leave the place but also wasn’t willing to miss out on all the other things that there were to view. I realized that sometimes no matter how much you like a place, it is important to move on and see new places. I was tired of the place but I knew that the view was as magnificent as before. With not much time remaining, this is all we could do on this spontaneous trip.I want to have more trips like this which are spontaneous and impulsive. This felt better and more adventurous than most of my other planned trips. I do have to visit Ireland again to see all that is left out. Soon!
