An ancient holy town and the starting point for pilgrimages to the Kedarnath Temple and the Badrinath Temple, Haridwar is the first recipient of the mighty rapid and revered Ganges, originating from the Gangotri Glacier. Its vast mythological background, beautiful temples (Shanti Kunj Gayatri Parivar), spectacular festival celebrations and the world famous Kumbh Mela (hosted every 12 years) make it a popular destination to be visited from around the world. Haridwar comes alive during sunset, when the evening aarti (ritual of worship) starts at Har Ki Pauri, a ghat (steps leading to a river) and the main attraction of the town where both the Ganga banks are lit up with floating claypot candles and chants of devotees and priests resonate musically throughout the town. The religious city serves no alcohol anywhere and restaurants are strictly vegetarian too, some well known ones being, Big Ben Restaurant, Chotiwala and the Haveli Hari Ganga Restaurant.

Har ki Pauri
Jai Ganga Maa Har Ki Pauri is a well known ghat on the banks of the Ganges in Haridwar in Uttarakhand state in India. This worshipped spot is the real historic point of the sacred city of Haridwar. Truly, "Har" signifies Ruler Shiva who is said to be a god according to the school named Shaivite Rishav School of Hindu religious philosophy. The Ruler Shiva and Lord Vishnu are said to have gone to the Brahmakund in Har Ki Pauri in the Vedic times. There is an expansive foot shaped impression said to have a place with Lord Vishnu on a stone wall. It is believed that it is the exact spot where the Ganges leaves the mountains and enters the fields. The ghat is on the west bank of Ganges channel through which the Ganges is redirected just toward the north. Har Ki Pauri is likewise the range where a huge number of travelers unite and the celebrations begin amid the Kumbha Mela, which happens at regular intervals.
Located hardly a few miles from Rishikesh, Shivpuri boasts of lofty hills, waterfalls and the clear greenish-blue Ganga. Apart from it's virgin beauty, Shivpuri is home to all the adventure sports activities in Uttarakhand. If you want to try living without technology for a while... try Shivpuri. Break the monotony today!!! You won't have a mobile network/ electricity/ high speed internet; but perhaps you would feel the strongest connection with yourself. The locals working there, were very welcoming too. It was fun that night at the camp as I sat with them behind the kitchen watching movies, drinking chaai.
