Torna Tourism & Travel Guide

Nicknamed Prachandagad, Torna dates back to the 13th century and is the highest hill fort of Maharashtra. According to history, when he was 16 years old, Shivaji Rao captured the fort and later reconstructed it. With its base in the village of Velhe, Torna is popular amongst trekkers and nature lovers. Located on the sweeping Sahyadris, the trek is sure to keep you engrossed in the panoramic views of the never-ending greenery and distant lakes. On entering the fort gate, you will be left astounded at the sight of the vast expanse of grasslands. The trails are dotted with desolate and crumbling temples and buildings. From the top of the Torna Fort, one can see the beautiful Raigad, Pratapgad, Mahabaleshwar and Khadakwasla Dam. The hike through the rocky patches and narrow ridges is rewarding, right from the beginning. The fort is engulfed in mist just after the monsoons, raising the adventure quotient. Every step through the beautiful gateways of Kokan Darwaja, Kothi Darwaja, and Bini Darwaja promises to transport you to a charming and mysterious old world.
