Our guide here spoke no English but with lots of personality and a little bit of translation, we learnt lots about the historical significance of both palms and dates. And, of course, we munched: freshly picked dates, honey, syrup and chocolate made from dates, date jam and date chutney. Believe it or not, nothing contained more than 4g of sugar per 100g – everything we tasted was as natural as it gets.
