About Virapapur

Located just across the Hampi River in the state of Karnataka, Virapapur Gadde is an area, rather a village, known for tourist huts and lodges in a countryside setting. The place has a bohemian, aesthetic feel to it and is frequented predominately by foreign backpackers, which is why it is popularly called the ‘hippie island’. Virupapur can be accessed, in a more adventurous fashion, by a seven-minute motorboat ride across the river from the mainland, Hampi. With only a few ‘touristy’ sites, Virupapur is known for its Hanuman Temple, believed to be the birthplace of Hanuman, the Hindu Deity, and hence revered. The Hampi Lake and the Pampa Sarovar are other places which are a must visit in the region. The streetscape is graced by a number of quintessential cafes as well as shacks that are operational only in the peak season of October to mid-March. Virupapur also has many rock climbing activities, especially bouldering, thereby catering to adrenaline junkies. Virupapur is indeed the perfect haven for travellers seeking an offbeat location to unwind sans the hype!
