When you walk into this tiny café tucked away in the 'not so quiet' side of Kala Ghoda, you instantly feel at home. The decor, slightly industrial with exposed pipes, old-school, art deco flooring, tall stools and cardboard framed mirrors, manage to comfort instead of overwhelm. The menu is quite unique and has a whole lot of things you'd not find elsewhere. You can choose to go healthy with the cracked wheat and barley upma, a variety of salads and the very cool Breakfast in a Bottle with oats and milk that can be blended together with all kinds of healthy ingredients to make a thick, delicious shake. If you're here to indulge try the sinful, 7 layer cookie (Belgian chocolate, biscuit crumbs, butterscotch and almond flakes with ice cream).

Standout dishes: Buttermilk pancakes, salli eggs, Breakfast in a Bottle, 7-layer cookie

Surrounded by potted plants that create your own little green patch, comfortable cane chairs, framed photographs of charming old houses in Bandra and a cosy sit out greet you when you walk into the Bagel Shop, one of Bandra's most loved hangouts. The cafe is pet-friendly so you might find a few pooches hanging around too. Tuck into the variety of freshly-baked, soft bagels stuffed with avocado, smoked salmon or any other filling of your choice and wash it down with a healthy smoothie. You could also try the homemade fugiyas (East Indian bread).

When you feel like your system needs to feel good and that both your mind and your stomach need some soothing, head to the Yoga House, a Santorini-style bungalow (airy space, painted in white and blue) in Bandra. Take off your shoes before you walk in and choose to park yourself on a mattress if you find space in the little balcony, which is our favourite space here. A vegetarian macrobiotic café sits pretty, next to a yoga studio and serves a range of healthy breakfast options. When you look at the menu, you realise that a lot of thought has gone into what is served. Fresh juices made using interesting combinations of fruits and vegetables (try the one with pomegranate, rose water and watermelon), homemade muesli and sumptuous salads (we recommend the Orange Salad – a cashew and orange dressing over a bed of vegetables and orange). The food is served in copper kahnsa vessels.

Cost for two: ₹1,200

Cuisine: Health food

Standout dishes: Homemade muesli, Ayurvedic oats porridge, paneer bhurji, somerset tartine, vegetarian brown rice paella, fresh raw juices

Timings and location: 8am to 10.30pm; Nargis Villa (Water Bungalow), Sherley Rajan Road, opposite ICICI Bank, Carter Road, Bandra West

A typical Mumbai-style Irani breakfast is something we can devour at any time of the day. Opened in 1904, Kyani & Co is easily one of the oldest Irani cafes in the city. The chequered tablecloth placed on wooden tables with glass tops, tiled floors, high ceilings and antique chairs have witnessed generations of Mumbaikars stop by for a quick cup of tea or a relaxed rendezvous. The owners have deliberately not changed much about the look and feel of the café. A popular hangout for students of St Xavier's College nearby, the café also makes an appearance on most heritage walk itineraries held in the area.

Cost for two: ₹300

Standout dishes: The glass cake, scrambled eggs, chicken puff and caramel custard

Timings and location: 7am to 8.45pm; opposite Metro Cinema, Marine Lines

White, floral, pretty and pink, with bicycle-shaped ketchup holders, floral bill boxes, white brick walls, this cafe will remind you of a cottage perched somewhere in the English countryside. The menu however features a mix of dishes from a European and a desi Grandmama's kitchen. So take your pick from buttery parantha's Parsi Akuri, and European pancakes .
