An Irish proverb says that a good laugh and a long sleep are the two best cures for anything. We woke up to our first morning in Leh, fully refreshed and ready for the day's activities, i.e. visiting some of the renowned monasteries and palaces in the capital of modern Ladakh. It was ascertained that neither of us suffered from AMS or acute mountain sickness, a condition resulting from low levels of oxygen and decreased air pressure at higher altitudes. Those approaching Leh by road from Srinagar are less likely to get mountain-sick because the ascent is gradual. We had been taking Diamox from the time we left Srinagar. Perhaps, that helped too. Though pugs are prone to breathing difficulties, Sammy seemed to be fit as a fiddle even at a height of more than 3500 metres. We did not have to resort to our Plan B, which was to return to Srinagar if Sammy was unable to cope.
