If you’re a city dweller living a fast paced life and are looking to slow it down several notches, then the Walterre cottage in Dehradun is worthy of your consideration.
This was the only objective with which we booked a room in this cottage. With a daily direct flight to Dehradun from Mumbai, it didn’t involve a torturous long road journey one would normally expect to reach such a place. The flight, nevertheless, should be booked well in advance else the price only heads in one direction. You guessed it – up!
Dehradun is situated below the popular hill station of Mussoorie. You could say Mussoorie was one of the summer capitals for the British during their reign in India. The cottage is 20 minutes from Dehradun town and approximately 90 minutes from Dehradun airport.
The cottage is located in an area which attracts a lot of birds of various species and so it is not very surprising that the owner is a birding enthusiast and writer himself. The cottage itself is ‘bird themed’ reflecting the owner’s passion with several paintings, sketches, wood carvings etc of birds. There is also a nice library with several books to choose from during your stay.
The cottage has 4 bedrooms, 2 on the ground floor and 2 above. There is also a large verandah on the first floor which makes it the perfect place to park yourself most of the time! Each bedroom has its individual style and period furniture including a four-poster bed.
There are also lush gardens with several species of plants and trees. The staff at the cottage takes care of all your meals and prepare dishes as per your request. Needless to say, the meals are fantastic.
