Diwali is one of the most loved festivals in the country. However, the after-effects of the festival every year prove to be hazardous, especially for the capital city. Though, this year is supposed to be the least polluted phase that Delhi has seen in four years, the city is still facing dangerous pollution levels in most areas.

While people across the country are trying to create more awareness about the harm that firecrackers cause, there are still many who go forth with it. On Diwali day, many people from the city shared the PM 2.5 levels in their area. Anything above 50 is bad and at most places, the levels even crossed 800. AQI (Air Quality Index) India kept sharing these updates on their official twitter page.

A particular time-lapse video especially went viral when it showed how Connaught Place got engulfed in smog as the day progressed into the night. As the light show at Connaught Place started, local citizens started burning fireworks and creating PM 2.5 levels higher than 1500. To get the pollution levels down, Delhi MCD even had to use water cannons to help settle the particulate matter.

In an effort to dissuade people from bursting firecrackers, the government in 2018 banned polluting firecrackers and only allowed manufacturing of green firecrackers. The Delhi government also launched a four-day mega laser show to encourage celebrating Diwali with lights and music. However, despite all initiatives, the worsening of air quality is an indicator of how bursting firecrackers can badly impact our environment and will hopefully be a lesson learnt for the future.
