History tells many tales, and Sigiriya has been associated with many tales throughout its history.
Located in the north of Matale District, near the town of Dambulla in the central province is the ancient rock fortress of Sigiriya.
This was the 2nd UNESCO World Heritage Site that i would be visiting. The tickets can be bought online or onsite. (Pro Tip :- for visitors from the SAARC nations, the tickets are discounted on showing the passport, so please keep the same with you). Sigiriya is well connected with Dambulla and one can find a lot of resorts and hotels catering to travellers with various budgets.
The main attraction is the rock formation which is 600ft high. The stories about the place date back to the Ramayana times and has prominent mention in stories about Ravana. History aside the place is immensely beautiful. One has to climb 1200 odd steps to reach the summit (Pro Tip: - it is good to start ascent late in the afternoon as the sun starts setting. One can see a beautiful sunset from atop the hill and also the crowds are lesser). Do carry a water bottle as nothing is available at the top.
The cloud bursts in multiple hues of orange as the sun sets and one can enjoy a surreal view amidst nature in silence. The views from the top are stunning to say the least.
