For all types of travelers, here are 10 of the best destinations for solo travel in India. Take a break, explore a new land or find yourself.

LEH, LADAKH

One of the coldest deserts in the world, Leh is teeming with picturesque trek spots and Himalayan panoramic views. You can stop time in Leh with the unending Pangong Tso Lake and Khardungala pass which is the highest civilian motor road in the world. It is every solo traveler’s heaven.

HAMPI, KARNATAKA

Hampi is an important world heritage site known for its ruins believed to have been around since the time of Ramayana. This city as the largest open monument and is called the lost city of Asia. The archeological museum, the Royal Enclosure with its stepwells, the underground temple of Lord Shiva and Gagan Mahal are the top attractions in Hampi.

JAIPUR, RAJASTHAN

Fondly called the ‘pink city’ due to the abundance of red rock building s all around the place, Jaipur is the land of Mahals (palaces) and forts. It is home to the UNESCO World Heritage Site Jantar Mantar that is an astronomical observatory. Choki Dhani, the ethnic village is an attraction that has preserves of a traditional Rajasthani village. Hawa Mahal, Nahargarh Fort and Jal Mahal are a visual treat to a new tourist.

RANN OF KUTCH, GUJARAT

It is hard to say if the Rann of Kutch is just a place or more than a phenomenon. These are seasonal marshlands in the Thar Desert that hone diverse wildlife species. Chir Batti (ghost light) at night, which is a strange ‘dancing light’ phenomenon, remains unexplained to this date, although this place was believed to be known by Alexander the Great as early as 325 BCE. Also look out for the Kutch handicrafts that are world famous for their mirror or bead inlay, and serve the living of several young girls and women in the area.

AJANTA AND ELLORA CAVES, MAHARASHTRA

Not all accidental discoveries turn out to be a country’s treasure like the Ajanta-Ellora caves. The carvings and the paintings in this region, date back to the 2nd century BCE. They are one of the largest rock-cut cave monument structures and one of the earliest preserves of Indian mural and cave art. Take hide out into these caves to go back in time and relish some ancient art.

SANGLA, HIMACHAL PRADESH

Sangla is a major city with township development on one hand, and a rooted dialect and culture of its own on the other hand. Situated close to the Tibet border and surrounded by breathtaking views of the Himalayas. Dreamy glaciers are at the distance of a hand’s reach, with the overwhelming panorama. Amidst snow-capped peaks and the beautiful Baspa River, no solo traveler ever feels alone. With forested slopes, and white silence, witness nature at its best.

KANYAKUMARI, TAMIL NADU

Explore the southernmost tip of the Indian peninsula - 'Cape Comorin' aka 'Kanyakumari' (eternal virgin). Mawlynnong (‘God’s own garden’) is the cleanest village in Asia. Apart from the incredible Mawsmai cave, Nohsngithiang Falls, Thangkharang Park and Ka Khoh Ramhah natural pillar rock, this place has a precious surprise to offer – the conviction to keep this place clean and green is as live and rooted in the minds of the residents, as strong as the live root bridge. KHAJURAHO, MADHYA PRADESH

Khajuraho is famous for the erotic sculpture monument. These depict tantra in a canvas of splendid art. One cannot just breeze through the structures and walk past without admiring the detailing and the philosophy conveyed through these sculptures. But there is a lot more to Khajuraho than just the erotic sculptures. Khajuraho is a celebration of mankind as a collective species and a tell-tale of the survival of Homo sapiens for billions of years through calamities, mythology, science, kingdoms and traditions.

SOUTH GARO HILLS, MEGHALAYA

This one is for the core wanderlust who would want to explore the off beaten track. South Garo Hills are a densely forested area in the abode of clouds. This vast area has the Nokrek Biosphere Reserve, Siju Wildlife Sanctuary and Balpakhram National Park that are pristine and full of biodiversity. Do not miss the spectacular night glowing mushrooms in this national park that are a wonder only next to the northern lights and the fireflies.
