Day 1

Fly to Holguin and instead of getting a taxi, hop on one of the tour buses that is going to your area (tip the driver).

Arrive in Guardalavaca where the resorts own the whole beach. Stay in a cheap all inclusive 3* resort (basic rooms, cocktails in plastic cups, but food and drinks provided 24/7).

Day 2

Spend the whole day chilling on the lovely white sand beach.

Day 3

Holguin - Trinidad journey. More details here.

Day 4

If you were a bit disappointed about the dirtiness of Holguin town, Trinidad can definitely make it up for you with its lovely colonial buildings, cool bars and friendly people. Make sure you stay at a casa particular, which is a Cuban style home stay. Most will serve you meals too, but be aware of the way they keep food out and not in the fridge (I got food poisoning possible from one of their desserts. However, it's easy to pop in to the doctors and get medications straight away).

Day 5

Hop on a local bus to visit the nearby Playa Ancon on the Caribbean Sea.

Day 6

Explore the surrounding hills and sugar cane plantations on horseback; and don't assume that your cowboy guide will speak English.

Day 7

Go for a full day hike in the Topes de Collantes. You won't need a guide, the signs are clear, but you do need to sort out a taxi to take you there and pick you up at the end.

There are jungle bars selling drinks on the way where you can chill for a bit, but none of them has any food.

Day 8

Prepare for a 5 hours bus journey to Havana and stay in the old town for 2 nights at least.

Day 10

Leave with the earliest bus (7am) to head back to Holguin and then Guardalavaca. 12 hours bus journey.

Day 11

Get tickets for the so-called Island Paradise tour that leaves frequently from Guardalavaca beach. It takes you to the nearby Cayo Saetia island where you get to enjoy a stunning beach and a slightly artificial safari experience. There are some really good spots for snorkling too.
